Excellent practices for developing mindfulness. With 52 practices you can open the book to a random page and read that 3 to 5 page chapter, and then take a pause to actually do the practices suggested. Rick explains the concept and gives practical "how to" that can be practiced. I recommend this book to many of the "too busy" professionals I work with that are wanting to develop mindfulness and a more meaningful life in general. While there is a Buddhist flavor to some of the practices, you can be atheist, agnostic, or a theist deeply steeped in your specific path and still find benefit from this well written book. Don't just read it... make space for the practices

In my work as a psychotherapist I rarely recommend self-help books, because most of them aren't worth the paper they're printed on. But once in a while a book comes along that really has the power to change our lives for the better. One such book is Just One Thing, by Rick Hanson. Rick is both a neuropsychologist and a meditation teacher, and he uses the new findings of neuroscience to show how very simple mind-training techniques, practiced for just a few minutes daily, can radically improve our well-being.The science behind the practices involves a simple principle: every time you use your mind you alter the structure of your brain. Everything you pay attention to, everything you think, feel and want, every time you react to what happens to you - all of these things sculpt your brain. Busy regions of the brain get more blood flow, and little-used neural connections wither away. "Neurons that fire together wire together" - every time you repeat any mental activity, you strengthen it and make it easier to become a habit. What this means is that if your mind regularly focuses on worries, anger, or self-criticism, then your brain develops neural structures supporting anxiety, low self-esteem, and impatience with others. But if you regularly focus your attention on noticing that you're all right now, not taking life personally, cultivating gratitude, or letting go - then gradually your brain re-shapes itself to support calm strength, self-confidence, and inner peace. So, for instance, regularly taking the time for mindfulness pauses activates the part of the brain that puts the brakes on negative feelings, and thus lifts mood. Other practices, such as taking in the good, feeling safer, relaxing anxiety about imperfection, or filling the hole in your heart, support and increase your sense of security and worth, resilience, effectiveness, and well-being.This book is very user-friendly. Each chapter title names a specific practice, and the rest of the chapter, which is never more than a few pages, tells you why to do it, and then how to do it. The practices themselves usually involve actions you take in your mind, such as reflecting, concentrating, or focusing your attention, and they only take a few minutes to do per day. But doing them regularly gradually re-shapes the brain to reduce stress and unhappiness, and to develop positive qualities. They're exactly like physical exercise; any single time you work out, not much changes, but over time your health and strength improve. We all understand that we have to make effort regularly over time to do things like learning how to drive a car or play basketball, but we typically think the mind should just work fine on its own, without any effort or discipline. Rick Hanson shows us how some very down-to-earth actions can turn an unruly mind into one that is focused, strong, and happy. I recommend this book highly.

I ordered this book about a week ago to help with some severe anxiety( as a result I've been having some uncomfortable health related side effects). I'm honestly no more then 29 pages in and feel as if its helping.I have coupled the exercises in this book with a new daily yoga regime, and already I'm finding myself more at ease, more accepting of myself, and more patient with my kids. Its really helping. The simplicity of this book is key. We're not aiming for enlightenment here, just peace of mind and a state of physical and mental calm...no lofty goals, just a sense that things are okay. Most exercises (so far) involve gently rethinking things, and letting oneself feel the positive moments in life. The writing is based on neuropsychological research, which means the aim is to really reshape the pathways of the your brain...making permanent long term change. This book is a valuable tool for anyone who is anxiety prone, prone to depression, or just prone negative self talk. This is one I will always carry with me. Wonderful, simple stuff! My thanks to the author!!

This short and truly simple but profound book is meant for anyone trying to change their habits of thought that stand in the way of a better life - self-doubt, self-criticism, indecision, and so forth. Unlike other longer "self-help" books with complicated questionnaires, stories about other people uncovering and conquering their problems, long explanations or advice about how to improve your life, this book contains 50+ short practices designed to encourage and develop new habits of thought and focus. You can read one at a time, several at once, pick them at random, or work through the book systematically. Not all may click, but one or more is bound to if you truly follow the practice. Unlike other approaches, which might involve something like recitation of certain phrases designed to interrupt negative thoughts, these practices each involve multiple suggestions designed to engage your personal emotions, memories, or thoughts. Hanson's previous book, Buddha's Brain, explains in detail with supporting cites why following practices such as this can actually change your brain and hence your thought patterns; this information might be helpful to some in providing support for this approach, but I did not find it useful, merely somewhat interesting. The practices in this book, however, are easily accessible and, if followed, can actually effect change.

Definitely a good read!! I've heard the lies from the methodical atheists and I've had enough. This argument is for those who seek truth and who speak it. No it's not about Christ, but, it is about recognizing Intelligent Design in nature, which is quite obvious to the humble but not to those who want to play God and have children bow to them. What is intelligence? How do we detect it and what is design? I'm a software engineer so I deal with these concepts every day. I'm Catholic, so, thinking outside the box and recognizing the truth comes naturally. However, humility and the love of truth are paramount in this book. If you have neither, don't bother to read it.

Interesting but teeters too closely to religious arguments for the ID movement.

I enjoyed this book; it was well written and presents a good argument for Intelligent Design. It is also written in "laymen's" terms which makes it much easier for the regular, non-scientific person to understand. They present evidence and arguements, that seem to put Darwinian Evolutionary Theory between a rock and a hard spot. The evidence presented makes you think about where it leads, as well as if what was taught in school all these years was really the truth. I would recommend this book to anyone for a good, objective read.

Wonderful perspective on both sides. I liked how it gave me a good perspective on Intelligent Design, while not knocking down the Evolution viewpoint. But I had an issue with the logical fallacies towards the end of the book... It seemed like the author just wanted to push the creationistic belief at the end after selling the pitch in the beginning. Otherwise, there are some nice points that are taken... Not a book worth to re-read, but definitely a good book for an introduction from the perspective of the ID theory.

This is a reasonably short, lucid book which will bring the reader up to speed on Intelligent Design and what it is.It is incredibly clear on the logical fallacy being deployed by those who say that "Intelligent Design is simply not science." Such people are coming from a position of philosophical materialism, and have decreed that scientific inquiry follow one and only one method, which is methodological materialism. They assert (or pretend) that science can only accept naturalistic or materialist answers. "That's the way science works," they sniff, and there they commit the logical fallacy of begging the question, as assuming what they need to prove. After all, this alleged "rule" is not part of any great physical law, and the people making an argument for Intelligent Design are challenging exactly this bogus rule.As others have tellingly pointed out, we got into this whole scientific exploration of our universe in order to try and determine the truth. (!) The last thing we need is some sniffy methodologists telling us that we are only allowed to discover truths which satisfy philosophical materialism. If you care for a very carefully phrased description of this situation, you might consider this:"...it is certainly true that belief or faith is not knowledge in the sense of practical knowledge and its particular kind of calculability. It can never become that, and in the last analysis it can only make itself ridiculous if it tries to establish itself in those forms. But the reverse is also true: calculable practical knowledge is limited by its very nature to the apparent, to what functions, and does not represent the way in which to find truth itself, which by its very method it has renounced."(Who wrote that? Benedict XVI!)...(And, no, I'm not a Christian, much less a Catholic.)On top of that logical fallacy, such people have a strong tendency to state that "science does NOT YET have an answer to the development of the irreducible complexity of the cell," thereby implying that an answer will be coming along any old time now. As David Berlinski puts it, that's right up there with "the check is in the mail" as a powerful, convincing statement. In the meantime, Atheist Scientists Inc. are up to some extremely dubious activities, such as "Chemical Evolution" and "Molecular Evolution." (See Wikipedia for "abiogenesis," which is "spontaneous generation" dressed up in a cheap tuxedo.) And excuse me for objecting that evolution is something which happens only to living things.

One of the best resources for information in the field of Intelligent Design. The scientific community has an unfortunate bias towards anything that comes from a Biblical or Christian source. Although scientists claim to be seekers of knowledge into how the universe came into being, they have a very narrow willingness to hear any alternative to the existence of life, other than the Theory of Evolution. Although Intelligent Design has the most intelligent and reasonable theories for the existence of the universe, it is considered by most scientists to be myth and delusion. The major colleges and universities in the Untied States will not hear any evidence for design, nor will they allow the teaching of intelligent design along side the Theory of Evolution. The scientific community has decided that Evolution is the final answer to the existence of life, and there is no room whatsoever for discussion from any other possible theory. This wonderful book by William Demski is both scholarly and scientific in it's explanation of Intelligent Design and why it should be considered as a viable option alongside the Theory of Evolution. For the sincere seeker of truth, I would highly recommend this resource for credible and accurate information in a field of science that is likely to overtake Evolution in the next ten years.Increasingly, scientists are departing their long held adherence to Evolution, as greater knowledge is gained in how the cell is constructed and the rapidly accelerating knowledge in the area of Biology. It is certain that at some point in the near future, all credible scientists will abandon Evolution as the evidence for it's impossibility becomes beyond the tolerance of rational people. As this takes place, the evidence for design in the universe will be increasingly acceptable as a reasonable explanation for the existence of design in the cell and throughout the entire universe.Doulos

From the Inside Flap

In this brilliant biography T. J. Stiles offers a new understanding of the legendary outlaw Jesse James. Although he has often been portrayed as a Robin Hood of the old west, in this ground-breaking work Stiles places James within the context of the bloody conflicts of the Civil War to reveal a much more complicated and significant figure. Raised in a fiercely pro-slavery household in bitterly divided Misssouri, at age sixteen James became a bushwhacker, one of the savage Confederate guerrillas that terrorized the border states. After the end of the war, James continued his campaign of robbery and murder into the brutal era of reconstruction, when his reckless daring, his partisan pronouncements, and his alliance with the sympathetic editor John Newman Edwards placed him squarely at the forefront of the former Confederates' bid to recapture political power. With meticulous research and vivid accounts of the dramatic adventures of the famous gunman, T. J. Stiles shows how he resembles not the apolitical hero of legend, but rather a figure ready to use violence to command attention for a political cause--in many ways, a forerunner of the modern terrorist.

Really great read! Two things other reviewers beat around the bush about but don't state exactly. The main one is that by the end of the Civil War Jesse was only 16 and had never really been away from home. By today's standards, his family would be the equivalent of the upper-middle-class, living and working in the rural areas of America. That he was from the southern culture is the key. The fact that his family owned 6 or 7 slaves, tragic, but it really had only a minor or no impact on his thinking as aside from one man, the rest of the slaves were working inside the house on domestic work (probably about a 1,000 sq ft. common house of the era), not in the fields. As a 16-year-old it was not his view of economics, it was his environment - a bad, bad example, but what he knew of life. There was nothing documented about his using white-supremest language, though others were quoted with those type statements, occasionally. The thing that is being missed is that his family and friends were all doing financially okay, from his viewpoint. Then, as is well brought out, as the war ended and his culture was turned upside down as were the many, many families and friends lives. There were no plantations in Western Missouri. Just some families had some slaves, not thousands of slaves. And, it was a culture of people that had done okay with the southern culture who were now economically and politically, effectively imprisoned after the war. Many were governmentally mandated to leave their properties and disappear elsewhere in a couple of weeks or go to jail, and on and on. Their culture, wrong as it had been, was nearly half of the population of the US and were then treated as war criminals after the war, particularly in Western Missouri by Missouri's politics and law, different from the Federal handling of the ex-confederate states.Jesse, was vastly more impacted by the government overriding his Bill of Rights-rights than the loss of the Southern slave-owning economy. Most others in that Little Dixie culture of Western Missouri 'served' their 'sentences' in one way or another and became just regular citizens of the US, Western Missouri, again in 15 or 20 years, and went on with life. Even his older brother Frank worked for years in Kentucky during the late 1870s and through the 1880s as practically a lone white man amongst black workers harvesting trees, on the same labor level, and had no disagreements about it.But Jesse, between his intelligence and his very social, engaging, out-going and likable personality, became the voice of the angst against government overriding his and the other's Constitutional rights. Unfortunately, after he had effectively played a large part in correcting those wrongs and the 'chains' on the earlier secessionists were gone, Jessie didn't know how to live a 'normal' life. The other point is that after Jesse was gone, a deserved but wrongly rendered death, none of his friends and family or even most of his antagonists stood out in society more than just regular people in any-town, any-state in America. It just makes the statement that as wrong as he was, even though he did accomplish the political end he was after, he truly was an outstanding person to have effectively created, and he intentionally did, the persona that we still associate with the name Jesse James. There is a huge huge amount of documentation that T.J. Stiles cross-collated and filter truth from exaggeration, poor memory recountings, etc., at the end of the book, discrepancies being noted on those that were not included, etc.So, if you want the best understanding of who, what, when, where, and how of the life and times of Jesse James, including the social/economic/political/environmental aspects of his life, I highly recommend this book. I am sure you'll be greatly enlightened. It is a story and not a fact-fest.(BTW I have had many, great friends and work associates who were ultimately descended from the pre-Civil War era slaves, that I hold as great examples of how in America if you want something you can get it regardless of personal circumstances or handicaps. They are my fellow Americans regardless of ancestry.)

An excellent work! Mr. Stiles sets the scene in MIssouri in a thorough, clear and interesting way. By the time you get to Jesse, you know the history of the culture and the specific family that created him. You know his mentors in the vicious bushwhacker gangs and how he was shaped from a young age in what was, essentially, what we would call "death squads" today.A superb job of giving you and understanding of why Jesse, of all the ex-guerillas turned outlaw, became so famous. Why his support with MIssourians grew, reached and apogee, then declined.Interestingly written. I highly recommend this book.

Very possibly the best book I've read in years. I love to read history. I haven't read a lot recently about American history though, especially Civil War history. This book brought that era alive for me on so many levels, I can't adequately describe it. Until now, it's been impossible for me to imagine living at ground zero in a war, especially a civil war. The hell of it that I felt in this book brought it home. I couldn't put it down, literally and figuratively. Read this book. You won't forget the experience.

After looking for a biography and in-depth look into the life of Jesse Woodson James, look no further than this one. Stiles paints a fantastic portrait of 19th century America, locked in a turbulent struggle with itself. Out of this conflict comes an opportunist, Jesse W. James who uses the Civil War as a springboard to fame and cementing his legacy as one of the greatest and cerberal outlaws of all time.Gritty, thorough, and insightful, Stile's book is a fabulous look into the turbulent times of the 1860's,70's,80's from the perspective of the State of MO.

So much information presented that I had never before heard or considered. The implications of the Civil War and slavery in the makeup of Jesse James and his family; the divide in Missouri over the same issues - Civil War and slavery; the ruthlessness and blood-thirsty ways of this particular rebel is well written and presented.

"Jesse James: Last Rebel of the Civil War" is the best work on James that I've seen to date. It includes details about his early life that I've never seen anywhere else. It also discusses the war years thoroughly. I liked the ties into the politics of the time and James's involvement in them. The narrative is very well written, and it flows so well that I was sorry to close it at the end. I enjoyed it thoroughly. I think this is the best book written on Jesse James. The research is well documented in the 69 pages of notes in the back. It relies heavily on contemporary news accounts and the Official Record of the Civil War, and delves deeply into the James myth and how he helped create it. T. J. Stiles is a good writer, and I recommend this book to anyone with even a passing interest in: Civil War Missouri, bushwhackers, the James brothers, or the outlaw period in Missouri. You will not be disappointed.

Review

“Wonderfully told, impressively researched…For fans of outdoor adventure, Alone on the Ice brings you as close to trekking in a blizzard on icy, dangerous terrain as you’ll likely want to get.” - Chuck Leddy, Minneapolis Star Tribune“Impressively seamless and straightforward.” - Christina Thompson, Boston Globe“A chilling story…You feel the freezing temperatures, the fear, the desperation, along with the loyalty of the other Australasian Antarctic Expedition members.” - Sandra Dallas, Denver Post“In Alone on the Ice, Roberts, a veteran mountain climber and chronicler of adventures, admirably succeeds in restoring the luster that the Australian Antarctic Expedition and its leader deserve.” - Dennis Drabelle, Washington Post“A fresh and thoroughly researched account of Doulas Mawson's epic journey of self-rescue across one of the most inhospitable regions known to man. Roberts takes the reader alongside the men of the 1912 Australasian Antarctic Expedition, and the desperation of Mawson s sledge journey can be well imagined step by frigid step.” - Ed Viesturs, author of K2: Life and Death on the World's Most Dangerous Mountain“Others have written the loose outlines of Douglas Mawson's astonishing survival against the worst conditions that Antarctica can deliver a lesser-known but equally compelling epic as that of Ernest Shackleton but Roberts's telling trumps them all.” - Gordon Wiltsie, author of To the Ends of the Earth“This is Roberts at his best, telling a little-known tale of adventure, tragedy, and endurance. Mawson may be the most famous Australian explorer, and Alone on the Ice is an admirable introduction of him to American readers.” - Greg Child, author of Over the Edge“An accurate and enthralling account of the greatest story of polar exploration and survival. Roberts takes the reader back to a time of hardship, collective friendship, and a level of determination unknown in todays culture. This book will make you cherish every meal and the joys of a warm bed.” - Conrad Anker, coauthor of The Lost Explorer: Finding Mallory on Mt. Everest

Author of The Mountain Of Fear, David Roberts delivers one of the most remarkable survival stories ever told. This heart-racing adventure of courage, strength, and the will to live is indeed a book that will keep you awake all night, impossible to put down! Within the first few chapters, the reader will begin to feel almost as if caffeine is pumping through their blood as we read about near-death situations. Douglas Mawson, a great explorer and expedition leader of the Australasian Antarctic finds himself starving, crawling, and escaping dangerous situations in extreme cold weather situations. His team of men were against all odds in surviving the almost impossible horrifying events that were thrown upon them with no food, no first-aid, and no supplies to help them in their amazing journey. As those who managed to survive had to battle with fear in near-misses, and the only thing that kept them alive was their incredible spirit. This adventure is chilling from beginning to end with colorful characters, stunning photos, and an eye-opener story of courage. Entertaining, riveting, heart-pounding, and impressive. Highly recommended!

After whipping through a couple great polar exploration books, I got a copy of Alone on the Ice. (Btw, I highly recommend both of these: Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage, which is the well known account of Shackleton's ill-fated, but miraculous survival in Antarctic and Arctic Adventure: My Life in the Frozen North, which though hugely popular in its day, is something of a lost classic that is a great read filled with lots of well told dramatic adventure while [unlike Endurance] giving insight into native Eskimo culture, which is fascinating.)In "Alone on the Ice," David Roberts tells the true story of what Sir Edmund Hillary called "the greatest survival story in the history of exploration." Hillary was referring to the 1912 expedition of Australian explorer Douglas Mawson and his fellow members of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (AAE). Mawson and cohorts set out to explore Antarctica with the intention of gathering specimens and to make scientific observations of the continent. What has left Mawson's considerable accomplishments and amazing survival story obscured by the layers of newsprint and time is--unlike Roald Amundsen and Robert Scott--he wasn't a pole bagger. Mawson, never grabbed headlines by "summiting" the south pole. Mawson and the AAE's expedition went virtually unnoticed by the public. Now, at the 100th year anniversary of the expedition, Roberts tells the story of Mawson, alone after his companions had died during the expedition, an expedition that saw them trek over 600 miles round trip while being face with 100 miles per hour winds, and left with little of their original provisions. Left as a lone explorer, Mawson was forced to make a ninety-five mile trek across the Antarctic Ice while battling extreme hunger, madness, and the deadly terrain of the continent.During his trek Mawson often had to crawl as a result of losing the flesh from the soles of his feet. And at one point, he fell into a deadly crevice that would have likely killed almost anyone else. However, Mawson, inspired by a poem by Robert. W. Service, was able to extricate himself out of the crevice with what could only be considered superhuman strength, determination, and extraordinary will. Roberts tells Mawson's story well and has seemingly done his research thorough, including some great, rarely-seen photos (one of an iced-over face is bizarre, as is the shot of an explorer's contortions to stay upright in a 100-mile an hour wind). The photos are by Frank Hurley, who is famous from his Endurance photos. In sum, this is a very engaging read. Robert's detailed description of Mawson's determination, perseverance, and courage gives Mawson the heroic recognition while provided classic adventure story entertainment.

This factual recounting of a scientific expedition to Antarctica is at times unbelievable, at times inspiring, at times tragic. The author never sensationalizes the facts or the telling of them, which makes the story even more incredible and a fantastic page-turner.

An interesting book about an amazing Antartic survival story, in which Douglas Mawson sledged alone to reach his base. I learned a great deal about Antarctica and the costs of exploration from it.

This book is essentially a biography of Douglas Mawson, the Australian Antarctic explorer who in 1912 survived a 30-day, almost 300-mile trek alone back to camp after his two teammates died. One of his teammates fell down a crevasse along with the sledge that carried most of the team's important equipment and most of its food, and the other died thereafter due to exposure, so Mawson had to survive on half or fewer rations. Mawson was a geology professor at the University of Adelaide and wanted to explore as much of the continent as possible rather than reach the South Pole (he was with Shackleton in 1908 when they came within 95 miles of the pole). He formed the Australasian Expedition with 24 members who landed and wintered over in what turned out to be the windiest spot on earth; some of the members, including Mawson, spent two winters there. The book is well-organized and Roberts is a great storyteller who argues that from a scientific standpoint the expedition achieved and explored more than those of the more famous Antarctic explorers Amundsen, Scott and Shackleton. Roberts finds little fault with Mawson and reviewed many letters, diaries and other primary sources. Roberts may have gone a little overboard defending Mawson against attacks made in 2001 by the son of one of the other expedition members. At the end of the book Roberts makes a perfunctory comment that Mawson had his faults, but the book rarely delved into them. Some people doubt Mawson's story that, after his teammates died, he fell in a crevasse to a depth of 14 feet hanging only by a rope, and in his weakened and starved condition climbed hand-over-hand most of the way, fell back down, then climbed hand-over-hand a second time to escape the crevasse. The book discusses a modern attempt (which failed) to replicate this feat and others have expressed doubt about its authenticity, but makes no comment on whether Mawson fabricated or embellished the story. One hundred years later I don't think anyone can say if the story is definitely true or not, but Roberts should at least have acknowledged that others doubt Mawson was telling the truth about it. Amazon.com Review

"The STRINGS all soar, the REEDS implore, / The BRASSES roar with notes galore. / It's music that we all adore. / It's what we go to concerts for." In this exuberant tribute to classical music and the passionate, eccentric musicians who play it, author Lloyd Moss begins with the mournful moan and silken tone of one trombone. A trumpet sings and stings along, forming a duo, then a fine French horn joins in, "TWO, now THREE-O, what a TRIO!" The mellow cello ups it to a quartet, then ZIN! ZIN! ZIN! a violin soars high and moves in to make a quintet. The flute that "sends our soul a-shiver" makes a sextet, and "with steely keys that softly click," a sleek, black, woody clarinet slips the group into a septet. We move on! A chamber group of ten! And the orchestra is ready to begin. Moss should be congratulated for creating a playful, musical stream of rhyming couplets that seamlessly, slyly teaches the names of myriad musical groups. Marjorie Priceman, the whimsical, masterful illustrator of Elsa Okon Rael's When Zaydeh Danced on Eldridge Street and Jack Prelutsky's For Laughing Out Loud, won a Caldecott Honor Award for this swirling, twirling, colorful musical world worthy of thunderous applause and a standing ovation. From Publishers Weekly

This debut book by author Moss, as kids today would say is boss. Its clever, jazzy verse presents (In language that is never dense) a helpful intro to each orchestra instrument-how some are alike but rather more are different. He starts with the trombone's "mournful moan," playing solo (i.e., alone); then adds a trumpet, French horn and cello-all sounding forth a signature "hello." Each musical portrait (in quatrains) abounds with perfectly chosen, alliterative sounds. Thus the flute, notes Moss, "sends our soul a-shiver; flute, that slender silver sliver." And Priceman's zany art's just right, with loose-limbed figures taking flight around each spread in garb bizarre, if proving how funky musicians are. With every new instrument joining the throng of diligent players practicing song, Moss incorporates numbers and stops only when his team finally reaches a "chamber group of ten." So the book can be used as a counting tool (A great way to perk up a dull day at school): but it really works best, it's easy to see, as a deft means of meeting the symphony. So a plentiful praise to this finely matched pair, whose pictures and words show unusual flair.Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

This is one of the most read books in our home library! I've been reading this book to my 4.5 year old since she was about a year old and we love the rhyming. What I like most about this book is that it's different. I'm tired of reading about farm animals, trucks, ponies and other typical kid's characters. This book teaches children about various instruments, introduces them to musical language and provides vibrant pictures to look at. I now give this to other children as a present!

My son was given a stack of truck books when he was about 2 and began learning the names of all kinds of obscure heavy machinery. I though, “that’s neat, but if he can learn that, he can also learn other things (more important to ME :).” So I decided to look for books about music. I bought "Zin Zin Zin a Violin!" and, sure enough, he soon began to recognize an oboe, harp, trombone, etc. He and we, his parents, loved it so much I looked for another Moss book and found the equally wonderful, "Our Marching Band.” As I wrote in my review of that book, it is primarily because of these two books that our son (who will be three next month) now recognizes all the major Western orchestral instruments, knows the difference between concert hall orchestras and marching bands, and is even aware of the difference between the type of batons used by a concert hall conductor and a marching band leader. The language is also fun and poetic with some lovely vocabulary and wonderful illustrations with diverse casts of characters. These books have truly influenced and become part of our life, and we're the happier for it!

My 19 month old daughter loves music and she is OBSESSED with this book! She could name all of the instruments after a day of reading this book dozens of times and loves asking us to pretend to "play" the instruments. The illustrations are great and she loves pointing out that the trombone player took his hat off in one of the pages, the french horn player intermittently "hides" his hand inside the horn, the animals are dancing, etc :) The rhyme is clever and catchy and I think something she will grow to appreciate when she is older with more attention span for actual reading! It's a great book for all ages, very educational and entertaining!

When my son was a baby, I found this book for a few dollars, obviously unread, at a local used goods store. I'm wary of books from there that appear unread, but on first glance through it seemed to be a good book so I bought it. And am I glad I did! We give away copies of this as a gift to new families. Our kids both love it, and my husband and I are drawn to things that rhyme since they are more fun to read and flow so well. This book rhymes well but the story also has depth as it goes through and explains a multitude of instruments. I have a musical background and love that this instills in my kids a love of instruments too. They are curious and when we come across opportunities to explore instruments, they have a background knowledge from this book as to what the instruments are and what they do. It's awesome. We love the story!

I must admit, I didn't like this book to begin with.As other reviewers mentioned, this book is not written to a child's level. I usually like to buy my daughter books that have bigger words sprinkled in the verses, but it seems like this book is crammed with the bigger words. Yes, the descriptions of the sound were accurate - but would a preschooler really understand the descriptions without hearing the instruments? I didn't think that she would be able to understand why the clarinet played "breezy notes so darkly slick," or the oboe was "gleeful, bleating, sobbing, pleading through it's throbbing double-reeding" without being exposed to sound of the instruments. In other words, I didn't think my daughter would be able to understand what the words meant from the context of the book alone. So why five stars then?We started reading this book a month ago, and since then my daughter has been asking for it every day - sometimes five times a day.As other reviewers mentioned, this book is great for reinforcing counting. It is quite refreshing to be able to count musicians as they're added to the orchestra, instead of just counting sheep or dinosaurs. The illustrations are quite beautiful, and in addition my daughter now knows the names of all of the instruments in the book.I also dusted off our Mozart Magic Cube (used to be called Embryonics Music cube)- a "music block toy" that has sound samples of four of the instruments in this book - the flute, harp, french horn, and violin. Whenever we read this book, my daughter finds the appropriate instrument for the appropriate verse. At the end, my daughter and I "clap loudly and shout 'Encore,'" and we play the entire orchestra on Mozart Magic cube again. And that, as the book says, "is a great delight." I have fun reading this book to her, even when I read it over and over again.

Good introduction to various orchestra music instruments for young children. The rhyme is cute, though sometimes may seem forced, it doesn't "baby" down the language even for the younger crowd - the vocabulary level is challenging and not typical without being out of reach (e.g. "encore" and "octet"). Text is not too long or verbose so doesn't overwhelm young children. A fun read aloud for our music loving 2 year old and seems good through kindergarrten. Though not the main focus, also a good and atypical counting book (10 instruments introduced one by one and counted upwards from a solo to duo, trio, quartet up to a nonet to a chamber group of ten.) Very lively, dynamic illustrations (see picture of cover) - I enjoyed them as an adult. Good gender/race mix for the musicians - a positive book in terms of diversity issues. Overall, a very good book for exposing young children to musical instruments; definitely worth having.
