Having friends who are nurses and hearing about their daily work stresses and responsibilities, I was trying to think how to help them with their own self-care which in turn will enable them to care even better for their patients. I just happened upon this book while I was visiting a friend in Ireland and after read bits and pieces decided I had to buy the book and gift them with a copy.Although specifically written with the nurse in mind and addressing their specific needs, it also spoke to me as an alternative health practitioner (I read the book in full before gifting, shh, don't tell) and believe it would benefit anyone working in a stressful environment.This book is not only well-laid out, clear and easy to understand, but gives concrete examples of how nurses can develop ways to care for themselves - easily and simply. It also shows ways nurses can provide deeper quality care and compassion for their clients despite their heavy loads and responsibilities.Nurses need as much acknowledgment and gratitude that we can give them for their important work. I think this book should be part of the curriculum of every nursing school.

Learning how to better care for oneself and one's patients is what Carmel offers in this much-needed and practical guide for nurses wishing to develop greater mindfulness in their practice and personal lives. If I could buy a copy of this book for every nurse and nursing student, I would! About the Author

Beattie was a struggling single parent of two children, freelance author, and journalist cranking out stories for a small-town daily newspaper in 1986 when she came up with a book idea. She wanted to write a book about what happens to people when they love someone who is addicted to alcohol and other drugs. "There were many books out there about how to help an addict or alcoholic. Nobody was talking about how an addict impacts the lives of the people around him or her, and how crazy you can become when you love someone who is addicted," Beattie said. "Even though I was sober, I didn't know how crazy I could get until it happened to me." Twenty publishers turned down Beattie's book proposal. "It's a good idea, but we don't think there's that many codependents out there," they wrote back. Hazelden, however, a treatment center and recovery publisher based in Minnesota, saw a need for the book. The publisher understood how families of alcoholics suffer and believed Beattie's book idea would help people. Beattie marched to the welfare department, asked for enough financial help to make it through the three months it would take her to write the book, then locked herself in a basement office and cranked out Codependent No More. Codependent No More has now sold 3.5 million copies. Beattie has since written nine more books, five for major publishing houses on the east and west coasts. She relocated from Minnesota to California, and she has long-since paid back the welfare department. Beattie has appeared in the pages of Newsweek and People and has been a regular guest on Geraldo and Oprah. Playing It By Heart is Beattie's first original book for Hazelden since 1990; the book is a return to her recovery roots that first brought her national recognition.

Bought this for a family member, I did not read it. They said it was good, not something I would read.

I read this to help me with my alcoholism recovery and I am a former director of a rehabilitation center. I think that codependency is often inherently linked to substance abuse and should be used and examined in one's recovery process. These kinds of books talk more about how to treat yourself well and how to live life as opposed to just confronting yourself with your wrong doings. Highly recommended

Like the superb book "A Darwinian Left" by Peter Singer, this is a marvelous discourse on one of the fundamental principles of our society -- for anyone who wonders about the meaning of life, both are fascinating excursions into the realm of new thought. This book is founded on an image out of the Middle Ages -- when two men, wrapped from head to toe in gleaming steel, carrying wicked lances, mounted on massive horses, charged full speed at each other to settle disputes about truth and justice in the confrontational medieval way. That, in essence, is the basis of `Justice is Conflict.' It's been the basis of Anglo-Saxon justice for at least a millennia, and for unknown hundreds of years before that. It's far from the idea that "might is right," instead it embodies that God is on the side of the just. Movies always depict it in that manner. From the meekest knight to the American fictional cowboy with a six-gun on his hip, justice always triumphs. It's a confrontational system of justice based on combat, as explained by Thomas Jefferson when he said he was not afraid to tolerate error "so long as reason is left free to combat it." The key word is "combat." Today, when lawyers challenge each other in court battles, they are staging a ritual re-enactment of those old jousts. In contrast, the Navajo spirit of K'e emphasizes a consensus system of justice. The goal is not that God can be counted on to favor the just; instead, it is a search to find truth and thus assess blame properly. There's usually no clear "Guilty" and "Innocent" verdict; instead, blame is assessed on a proportional basis. In other words, even if you are guilty, perhaps you are only 90 percent guilty. Perhaps the other person did contribute somewhat to the problem. Perhaps the solution requires a compromise to achieve justice. Harmony, rather than win-loss absolutism, is prized. Hampshire is undoubtedly correct in asserting that our society is based on the ethics of confrontation; he asserts this eternal "conflict" produced our modern world. He's very persuasive; and, as a friend used to say, "Interesting . . . if true." But, what was the situation a thousand years ago when Europe was the weakest and most backward region in the world. The question then, is whether transforming the direct confrontation system of justice into a careful and precise ritualized procedure made all the difference, or were other factors involved in European society becoming dominant. Twenty-five hundred years ago, Plato argued for the Navajo approach -- reason should be used to achieve agreement and harmony among warring ideas. That was at a time when society worshipped a pantheon of gods; two thousand years ago, the concept of a single God began to take hold. The same idea took hold in matters of justice; instead of a panopoly of truths, people began to seek one truth -- a person was either guilty or innocent, with no Mr. Inbetween. Justicfe became an all-or-nothing decision. Forget about the middle of the road, the only thing you find there are yellow stripes and dead armadillos. As Thomas Paine said in 1792 in `The Rights of Man,' "moderation in principle is always a vice." Hampshire, like Singer, goes to the heart of what makes our society tick -- perhaps. It's a book for readers who like to think about philosophy and the fundamental roots of our society. These books will make you think; for people who love ideas, Hampshire and Singer are two original thinkers. Both are eminently worth buying.
