About the Author

Beattie was a struggling single parent of two children, freelance author, and journalist cranking out stories for a small-town daily newspaper in 1986 when she came up with a book idea. She wanted to write a book about what happens to people when they love someone who is addicted to alcohol and other drugs. "There were many books out there about how to help an addict or alcoholic. Nobody was talking about how an addict impacts the lives of the people around him or her, and how crazy you can become when you love someone who is addicted," Beattie said. "Even though I was sober, I didn't know how crazy I could get until it happened to me." Twenty publishers turned down Beattie's book proposal. "It's a good idea, but we don't think there's that many codependents out there," they wrote back. Hazelden, however, a treatment center and recovery publisher based in Minnesota, saw a need for the book. The publisher understood how families of alcoholics suffer and believed Beattie's book idea would help people. Beattie marched to the welfare department, asked for enough financial help to make it through the three months it would take her to write the book, then locked herself in a basement office and cranked out Codependent No More. Codependent No More has now sold 3.5 million copies. Beattie has since written nine more books, five for major publishing houses on the east and west coasts. She relocated from Minnesota to California, and she has long-since paid back the welfare department. Beattie has appeared in the pages of Newsweek and People and has been a regular guest on Geraldo and Oprah. Playing It By Heart is Beattie's first original book for Hazelden since 1990; the book is a return to her recovery roots that first brought her national recognition.

Hay una solución en buscar la recuperación.Me gusta la manera que está escrito, no es un manual profesional que es muy complicado. Es un libro que se usa palablas sencillas, conceptos básicas, y explica en una forma que todos puedan entender.Por eso, es mi opinión que el libro es muy importante para personas buscando como mejorarse. También, es un libro para pastores, misioneros, profesores, trabajadores sociales y personas que quieren ayudar a los otros salir de sus relaciones enfermas.Tenemos una cultura con tantos problemas, adicciones y enfermedades mentales, que debemos buscar la solución.Creo en el uso de "self-help" o sea, "auto-ayuda" porque he visto quesí, uno puede vivir mejor cuando saben lo que es el problema de verdad.

Bought this for a family member, I did not read it. They said it was good, not something I would read.

I read this to help me with my alcoholism recovery and I am a former director of a rehabilitation center. I think that codependency is often inherently linked to substance abuse and should be used and examined in one's recovery process. These kinds of books talk more about how to treat yourself well and how to live life as opposed to just confronting yourself with your wrong doings. Highly recommended

Este libro cambio mi vida después de una relación conflictiva con mi exnovio. Ahora he dejado todas las relaciones conflictivas de mi vida en el pasado y he empezado a construir relaciones que me hacen una mejor persona cada día. NO DUDE EN COMPRAR ESTE LIBRO!!!!!! Yo ya he comprado 10 copias y se las he regalado a todos mis amigos y familiares.

El libro para mi a sido una herramienta eficaz acompañado con una agrupacion de 12 pasos. Creo que si no estubiese en una agrupacion de recuperacion hubiese muchas cosas que no podria entender. Melodie sabe de lo que habla muy bien. El libro tiene mucha objetividad y me a ayudado mucho a dejar de ser codependiente. He podido tomar deciciones y hacerme responsalbe de las concecuecias ya sean agradables o no agradablse. El libro me a ayudado a conocerme mejor. El libro no trabaja en uno por arte de magia es cuestion de ser honesto con uno mismo y meterse en la vidad de uno y no de los demas. Como codependiente a sido duro dejar mis viejos moldes pero cuando siento que estoy estancada regreso al libro y ahi encuentro respuestas.
