Cassian was a 4th/5th Century religious and priest who founded two monasteries in Western Europe. Later in life he wrote extensively of his experience of Egyptian and Palestinian monasticism. He holds the Egyptian form of cenobitic life as the ideal from which Western monastic communities could learn much. The work is divided into two parts: his description of the institutes or guiding principles of Egyptian monasticism; and in the second part of the book he describes the eight principal vices and their remedies. The book was written several decades after his experience in Egypt and Palestine and so we are depending upon Cassian's ability to recall accurately and objectively events from a somewhat distant past. One gets a first-hand glimpse into the life of the early desert fathers and the spiritual combat or "athletic competition" they engage in.It is the notion of obedience that stands out in this work. The obedience of the monk to his spiritual father as representative of the monk's single-minded desire to accomplish God's will. Cassian shows that being one with Christ in obedience to the Father's will was what the monks of Egypt aspired to above all else.The book is more descriptive than systematic in nature and therefore quite easy to read.

Like many early Christian writers, the life of John Cassian (c. 360-c. 435) remains shrouded in the mists of forgotten history. He was probably born in present day Romania (Dacia). When he was about twenty he traveled with his friend Germanus to Bethlehem where he joined a monastery. From Bethlehem Cassian and Germanus made at least two extended visits to the famous monastics down in Egypt (by some estimates they spent ten years there), and from there moved on to Constantinople. In Constantinople the bishop John Chrysostom ordained Cassian to the diaconate some time around the year 400, at which time he traveled to Rome to courier some letters and was ordained a priest by Pope Innocent I. Cassian later settled in Marseilles, where he founded two monasteries, and wrote three books. His Institutes, along with its much longer companion volume entitled Conferences (some 700 pages), chronicle the riches of early Egyptian monasticism based upon his considerable personal experiences and acquaintances, and in so doing transplanted that monastic influence in the West. Compared to the Conferences, the Institutes ("teaching" or "guiding principle" worthy of emulation) is a simple book that is composed of two rather unrelated parts. In the first four "books," Cassian describes the nature and symbolic significance of the monastic garb, explains their regimen of day and night canonical prayers, and then provides a fascinating first hand account purportedly from Abba Pinufius about the reception of a new "renunciant" into the monastery. Books five to twelve then analyze the eight principal vices--gluttony, fornication, avarice, anger, sadness, acedia ("a wearied or anxious heart" that suggests close parallels to what today would pass for clinical depression), vainglory, and pride. Throughout the Institutes Cassian contrasts the outward and external aspects of monasticism with the inner heart of a person, that place where genuine transformation occurs. The collected wisdom of practical experience, as opposed to mere theory, informed monastic life. Cassian is also clearly eager to place himself in the mainstream of monastic tradition, and to avoid minority opinions and practices: "The opinion of a few must not be preferred to nor must it prejudice the common practice of all." About the Author

Lynette Rohrer Shirk is a classically trained chef. She is the author of Wild Women Throw a Party, The Mother Daughter Cookbook, The Everything Tapas and Small Plates Cookbook, The Everything Classic Recipes Book, and Wild Women in the Kitchen. She holds a BA in classics from The Ohio State University and attended the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco. Shirk worked at Alice Waters's restaurant Chez Panisse in Berkeley, CA, which was one of the first restaurants to include organic foods on its menu. She spent a year in Eugene, OR, soaking up the organic produce, making baby food from scratch, and creating candy recipes using ingredients such as brown rice syrup, sunflower seeds, and soy milk. She lives in Flower Mound, TX. TECH. REVIEWER: Julie Negrin, M.S., is a certified nutritionist and culinary expert with more than ten years of experience. She has taught hundreds of children and adults how to cook, given countless nutrition lectures and cooking demonstrations, and developed dozens of healthy, delicious recipes. This cookbook may offer SOME high fiber recipes, however, the sugar amount called for in the recipes was staggering.

Maggie loved it! She's on a very low fat diet (pancreatitis). She hated the store bought dry food, but loved-of course-the home cooked food,,,,. Smart Yorkie!

I bought this book looking for a healthy, high fiber cookbook. There are a lot of recipes that have an alarming amount of fat! Chicken Salad Bake: 74.3 grams of fat and almost 1,000 calories per serving! I think the fat and calories would offset the benefit of the fiber!!

Summary: It is a deep look at our culture and how Christianity fits into it. Sayers is gospel guy, calling the church back to its faithful orthodoxy, the Bible and courageous creative response in light of the new cultural landscape.The Good: Sayers uses illustrations very effectively. Thy have wide range from islands traditions changing how they reacted to the Tsunami (134ff), movies (Safe 53 and Her 89), to Al-Qaeda versus Islamic state comparisons(109ff).Sayers talks of Christianity's "soft power (p. 10)" and the page before quotes another claiming Christianity is full of "thousands of quiet kindnesses.”Chapter 2 draws out an interesting history of how the north American church (and apparently the author homeland of Australia as well) is obsessed with “relevance.” It was fairly insightful.Chapter 3 is very good. It starts out with the often-cited Chinese sociologist given credit to the rise of the west no to guns, political structure, or but in sum, “we have realized that the heart of your culture is your religion: Christianity (41).”The real gem in chapter 3 is the first, second and third culture explanation. First cultures “believe in many gods(43).” Second cultures “are rooted in the Judeo-Christin ethic (43).” Third cultures “define themselves against second cultures ($45).”This insight into modern religious culture is tremendously astute. A partial solution offered here in the narrative is given in the words of Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, “to become a creativity minority…is not easy, because it involves maintaining strong links with the outside world while staying true to your faith, seeking not merely to keep the sacred flame burning but also to transform the larger society of which you are a part (page 50).”Chapter 4 lost me for a little. The talk about Gnosticism didn’t match up with what my seminary and undergrad profs talk about Gnostic teaching. But Sayers is using this is a similar way to many others currently. Sayer’s new Gnosticism seems combo of Zen Buddhism/Mindfulness, New Age thought, Secular Humanism and self-help movement, and the Prosperity Gospel. It seems Sayer’s is labeling a combo of all the threats to Christianity currently in one title. But I now found out there is a fairly large focus to this new label.Here is a solid quote from Chapter 4. “Gnosticism is an attempt to retain the fruits of Christianity and the solace of faith while maximizing the individual’s authority. It is the post-Christian impulse par excellence (59).”Part 2 (chapters 5 +) follows this outline:New Cultural Landscape (A) + Faithful Orthodoxy (B) + Courageous Creative Response (C) = Revitalization of the church and culture (D)He does a fairly accurate job to present solutions that aren’t simplistic and actually seem like they could work in the real world.Chapter 9 has a stand out idea. “Institutions are our beliefs and ethics enfleshed. They bring ideas down from the ether and ensure that they are operating within actual life of a community (132).” Sayers solution to helping the church rise and through it the gospel is strengthening the institutions that purport ideas. For the gospel to flourish churches need to flourish. He quotes Andy Crouch, “Institutions are the way the teeming abundance of human creativity and culture are handed on to future generations (135).”Sayers ends the book with a call to abide in Christ. “To do this (abiding and making an impact) … we must again learn to abide in the Father (167).”

Mark Sayers, with sharp perception and magical dexterity, disects our cultural place in time. He names the things about our moment that have, from history, put the church in the place we occupy today. A place influenced by hedonism, a mistaken missiology and a resurgent Gnosticism: the idolotry of self. He is not wallowing in cynicism but he brings it all back around to what he calls “gospel resilience” and the reestablishment of communities with strong ties.I have found myself unmistakably changed by this book. A single look outside the window at our world and it’s easy to feel that so much is bent out of shape and the resulting head fog leaves many Christians uncertain how to navigate our post-Christian culture. With clarity and insight Mark Sayers diffuses the fog and helps us to realize our calling and purpose as a Jesus following creative minority in the caustic, secular world.

I really enjoyed reading this book. Mark Sayers is brilliant in culture, and how culture has shifted. This book was a huge wake up call to step back and look at how I view church. I would’ve liked more biblical referencing, but it’s still a great book, and an awesome job by Mark Sayers.

This is a good book on the cultural moment we find ourselves in and the way forward for those that follow Jesus. To abide in him is the centerpiece. May we see the opportunities before us to be the redemptive force we are called to be.

This is a must read for any pastor or church leader! I read it through and then immediately turned back to page one and read it again. It's a great work in helping us understand the times we live in and what to do as we move into the future.

A thorough and unique analysis of where the Western church lies on the cultural continuum. This is not a happy, encouraging book. It's tough medicine. I think it's worthwhile for anyone who cares about how to do church ministry that's vitally connected with our culture.

This book is an amazing theological and philosophical work that diagnoses the climate change in the culture. Is there an advantage for the church in slipping out of the cultural limelight? Can the radical individualism of Western culture be engaged with the Gospel? Read the book.
