The author reveals her lonely childhood, filled with rejection and despair, tempered only by love for her pet pony. Thus sets the stage for the future love of her life, and salvation, a Morgan horse named Georgia. Their love relationship is best described in the author’s own words: “She trusted me, and the reward for both of us was that she was free to be herself in my presence. Maybe I needed to learn to trust someone, too…” Yet, tragic choices of partners in marriage, that twice resulted in the worst kind of abusive betrayals, lead her further into a hellish life. This compels her deeper descent into alcohol abuse and dependency. Yet, in time, the author learns so much about life, people, addiction, and herself: “I concluded there were two kinds of crazy people: the ones who knew they were crazy and the ones who didn’t.” Which drives the story to the inspirational outcome of recovery, and eventual dedication to helping other addicts recover too: “Nobody made it through life without scars; it was just a question of what kind.” I found so much wisdom within this story that I was tempted to high-lite each little pearl of truth, yet I found all the pages turning yellow! Thus, in her eventual sober wisdom, she reveals how it felt: “The two words that best described how it felt to be sober the first few years were overwhelmed and fearful.” I found great irony in that these same words also describe what drives so many souls into addiction too. This book is so well written and personal, that it leaves the reader fully engaged in the author’s world, and grateful for the new found awareness, wisdom, and insight into how the love of a horse can be one’s salvation. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

I'm a sucker for anything to do with horses, so when I saw the cover with its beautiful Arabian horse, I was hooked. Even when I found out that the horse in the story is a Morgan, I thought 'artistic license' and kept reading. Unfortunately, the story is about the writer overcoming her addiction to alcohol through her obsession to the horse. It could just as easily been about painting, or music, or running marathons. It just happened to be about her relationship with the horse. I just didn't find her story compelling.

We are all broken in our own unique ways. For Susan, saddled with a life of loneliness, sadness, poor self-esteem led to an alcohol soaked adulthood. However, a beautiful horse, Georgia, gives her a reason to ground herself; to care for such a horse would require sobriety. Can this, teamed with moving where she doesn't know a soul help her reinvent and rebuild her life?

I’ve just finished reading all 3 of Susan Richards’ memoirs (Chosen By A Horse, Chosen Forever, Saddled) and all 3 are really wonderful cover to cover. These books contain so many layers of life that I learned a lot and healed a lot throughout reading them.

I did not want this book to end. This book is about the love of a woman for her horse. But it's also about the challenges of being a child of an alcoholic, and of being an active and then recovering alcoholic. The author's writing style is honest, vulnerable, concise. She lets you into her struggles and allows you to travel through to her eventual healing with her.I highly recommend to animal lovers, horse lovers and anyone interested in alcoholism and recovery. Great read! Hope this author writes many more!

This author's writing style is so quiet and seamless that before you know it, the sun is coming up and you've been reading all night long. She is a gifted story teller with a great-big heart. If you love horses and the natural world you will laugh and cry while turning the pages of a Susan Richards story. I have now read all that she has published and find myself resisting the temptation to call her on the phone. That's how intimate her writing style is. We love her animals right along with her and we feel her deep anguish and pain. I hope she will be publishing more soon because I am addicted. I can't imagine anyone not enjoying a Susan Richards memoir. She really is "all that."

I read much negative review of her (character) in the 1st two books, and consequently didn't buy them. But being a recovering alcoholic & having gone thru divorce(without the abuse) -- all before rediscovering to the Path of the Horse (after 55 yrs), this book is truly the redemption & explanation of the author's (apparent) "bad" behavior and the true healing that horses can provide!

A story that takes you on a ride through a life in need of salvation from drinking, abuse and for her damaged soul. The author opens up the pain that was her life in a book so well written you not only feel the pain of her life but the path to recovery. It is so well written that if you read the book only for the descriptions of bath

Review

“With a great sense of storytelling, author Winifred Conkling introduces two physicists whose major discoveries also brought about more equality and anti-war awareness in the sciences . . . Radioactive! addresses serious topics like the advent of chemical and atomic warfare and the Nazi rise to power, and leaves biography buffs wanting to know more in the best way.” —BUST Magazine “A thorough and engaging study of two female scientists worth their weight in radium.”—Booklist, starred review “Luminous and fascinating, [Radioactive!] recounts the lives and amazing findings of chemist (and daughter of [Marie] Curie) Irène Joliot-Curie, codiscoverer of artificial radiation, and physicist Lise Meitner, codiscoverer of nuclear fission. This title would make a lovely companion to Steve Sheinkin’s Bomb: The Race to Build—and Steal—the World’s Most Dangerous Weapon." —School Library Journal“In this thorough and clear dual biography, Conkling (Passenger on the Pearl) profiles two 20th-century scientists whose contributions facilitated the creation of the atomic bomb—to their horror. Though Lise Meitner (1878–1968) and Irène Curie (1897–1956) shared an idealistic and passionate devotion to physics, they were often rivals and never worked collaboratively...Both highly educated women struggled against chauvinist attitudes: Curie's efforts to join the French Academy of Science were repeatedly turned down, while Meitner never received a Nobel Prize despite 15 nominations. Conkling successfully redresses that lack of recognition here. A glossary, time line, and extensive "Who's Who" section provide additional context, along with explanatory sidebars and b&w photos. ” —Publishers Weekly

Marie and Pierre get all the credit, but Irene was a great scientist who spent a lot of her life either in the shadow of her parents or struggling against a system that refused to believe that a woman could be not only a good scientist but a great scientist. Add on top of all that, she was a Jew in Germany as the Nazi's came to power. So her contributions were often mis-credited and covered-up.And Lise Meitner has also been more of a shadow figure and her role has not been as well known as it should be.This is a great book explaining the the physics and chemistry behind all the radioactive research and science, but also the culture and politics at the time.

This is a good book for young people to learn not only about the discovery of nuclear fission, but to understand the role of women in nuclear science.I have produced two films on both of these women. They are: The Path to Nuclear Fission: The Story of Lise Meitner and Otto Hahn and Out from the Shadows: The Story of Irene Joliot Cureie and Frederick Joliot Curie for an adult audience.

Good read for 7-10 grade research, or just for fun if you love history and science.

This is an excellent book for young people who have no idea of the development of nuclear energy.

This book shows the lives and work of two important female scientists: Irene Curie (Marie Curie's daughter) and Lise Meitner. While the science was a bit hard, the story of a woman struggling to be recognized in a science field in the early 1900's was engrossing.Irene Curie never failed to help people. She went to military posts and cured men after an air raid. She spent her 18th birthday in a post at Hoogstade, Belgium. We also learn about Meitner, who struggled not only to obtain an education, but also to find jobs in her field. She was involved in experiments including nuclear fission, but her work was interrupted by WWII.Both highly educated women struggled against the fact that they couldn’t get what they deserved. Curie's efforts to join the French Academy of Science were repeatedly turned down, while Meitner never received a Nobel Prize despite 15 nominations. As conflict builds up in these women’s lives, they try to find a compromise. This book is a blend of biography, science, and heart-warming story. I would highly recommend it to kids in grades 7 through 9. However, it is also a good read for everyone.Review by Madhalasa I, age 12, North Texas Mensan

RADIOACTIVE! How Irène Curie And Lise Meitner Revolutionized Science And Changed The World by Winifred Conkling tells of two little known scientists and their journey to success through the experimentation of radium and other various substances. While I usually find nonfiction books bland and have trouble concentrating, I did not experience that with RADIOACTIVE! at all --- it was dynamic and a pleasure to read. RADIOACTIVE! Will keep readers gripped by not only informing them about the scientific aspects of Irène Curie and Lise Meitner's life, but also the personal side. While reading, I learned so many new things about these two female scientists that I didn't know before, such as Meitner’s discovery of the nuclear fission. I found that the book almost read like a fiction novel, which was perfect for keeping me gripped on to the story.I think it’s important that that the subject material in YA nonfiction books can be understood by readers aged 12 and above, and RADIOACTIVE! achieves that. As you would expect from a novel about two scientists that worked on radioactivity, there are some pretty hefty science facts that might not be easily understood at first glance. Conkling really makes sure you understand the subject matter, though, by including illustrations to ease you in. I found these extremely useful during my reading and appreciated the helping hand.I did notice, however, that Conkling talked about the two physicists separately rather than intertwining their stories. It didn't throw off the groove of the book, by any means, but I think their stories would have been improved if they were woven together. There's no doubt that RADIOACTIVE! isn't for everyone, but if you like empowering reads about women or enjoy learning about science and the politics of it, pick up this book and give it a whirl. Chances are, you'll like it.Reviewed by Linnea P.

I bought this book after seeing the dress on the cover and thinking that the designs would be very stylish and high end. Once I got the book and looked at the designs I could only think of one thing: Why did I buy a book that gives me patterns for thrift store rejects? I am a mature woman and most all the designs in this book are for a teeny bopper, not an adult. Hence the book was returned. If you're an adult, don't bother. There are much better designs in Vogue and even some of the other pattern catalogs. I don't know what runways these designs were on but I will never bother with any of the authors books in the future.

I bought this book after reading great reviews. The styles were great. I don't mind taping together patterns to sew. The dress in the back cover is the one I sewed. I went to print out a size 4, then checked their sizing and printed out a size 0. I had looked at the size 4 PDF File and saw there were 88 papers. A lot, but I could live with that. I pulled up size 0 and it said 175 pages! 175 pages?? Almost twice as many, shy just 1 page! I looked closely at the pages and determined they had been duplicated in the file. I chose to print the first 88 pages to see what happened. I did get all the pattern pieces and also got 8 random pages that fit with nothing. Just a random check of the files included on the disc by the author or publisher would have shown them this error. Thank goodness I did not press Print and get 175 pages! The fit of the dress was poor by any standards but I was able to adjust it. The instructions were amateurish and incomplete by any standard. I have been sewing most of my life so I was able to complete the dress I wanted but I feel sorry for any sewer with less experience attempting this dress.

I am a big fan of "Twinkle Sews" and her innovative designs. They are current, edgy & classy. Women of all ages can wear them. I am 50 and Wenlan Chia's designs are flattering on me as well as on my 20 y/o daughter. However, a word of caution: this book is not for beginners! You must have a good basic knowledge of clothing construction. Otherwise you may find this a frustrating experience. I've been sewing since 1974 so had no problems with the "interesting" directions...in other words, that means you'll need to wing it.A few other words of wisdom: 1. all fabric yardage requirements are based on 60" width, so you'll need to adjust accordingly. 2. all seam allowances are 3/8" or 1/2" (unless indicated otherwise). 3. the author is correct-invest in quality fabric. It really does make a difference. 4. That being said, I would suggest making a muslin first - you can keep it for future use. 5. If the garment is fitted across the chest, this appears to favor smaller busted women (of which I am one!) so if you're busty, you'll need to adjust your pattern before cutting. So if you're experienced, buy this book and have a ball. It has unleashed my creativity that has carried over to my other projects. It will do the same for you.

Twinkle Sews has several lovely designs, which can be altered into one's taste quite easily. The book includes blouses, skirts and dresses, all of which are original and fashionable. Each design is well introduced and the pictures are clear and in good quality. There is also a rating, of how difficult each desing is, visible among each design, but it is quite misleading. The "easiest" pieces are actually quite difficult and the "advanced" ones do not differ from "intermediate" at all. The "how-to" parts have also several mistakes and typos. I have made 3 clothes according to this book, and not one of them has been that easy, but rather time consuming and include many steps. However, the patterns have to be printed (there's a CD included) and put together. This means printing tens and tens of A4 papers and taping them together according to the markings, which are luckily clear. I have, however, found that the patterns do not follow the size map that well, I have been forced to modify each pattern though I have used the smallest size which is one size smaller than the size map suggests me to use. This makes the process of making the clothes quite painful, since first you have to print, then tape the pieces together, cut them, fit them, fit the patterns to fabric, cut and only then starts the sewing. The actual sewing info is super clear, even too clear so that even simple stitches sound difficult. For a non-native english speaker, the used terms and confusing, since there is no coference when referring to interfacing or the actual top fabric.Otherwise, if the reader is quite advanced in sewing, the book is great for inspiration and if one can make patterns self, the designes are very beautiful and worth the effort. However, for a newbie sewer: this book is not for you!

The price was great but the description promised more which made it feel grossly misleading. It was a great disappointment. It gets three stars only because the price was so low. Thank you.

Some of the patterns seem to never go out of style while some of the patterns are a little outdated. At the same time, I have seen a lot of cropped tops at the stores lately so maybe they are coming back in style. Either way, the patterns are nice and you can modify them to fit your style. You can always make some longer in length or more snug. I plan on making a lot of these pieces once I have more time.

Instructions along with the pattern pieces. I love it.

introductionDo you feel tired most of the time? Are you experiencing digestive problems—gas, bloating, constipation or diarrhea—that come and go but never really clear up? Do you suffer from food sensitivities and environmental intolerances? Have you developed allergic-like reactions and can’t understand why? Are you depressed? Do you have difficulty gaining or losing weight no matter what you do? Have you even tried a yeast control program that helped to some degree but know you can’t stay away from bread, alcohol, fruit, and fruit juices all your life? Do you sense something is not quite right with you but just can’t figure out the cause—and, for that matter, neither can your doctor? If these symptoms and feelings sound familiar, then you may be an unsuspecting victim of the parasite epidemic that is affecting millions of Americans. It is an epidemic that knows no territorial, economic, or sexual boundaries. It is a silent epidemic of which most doctors in this country are not even aware. Yet, according to parasite expert and medical researcher Louis Parrish, M.D., at least eight out of ten of his patients have some kind of parasite infection. Here is the untold story that finally solves the mystery of many chronic health disorders. It is a story that began for me back in 1974 when I stumbled upon the connection between parasites and disease. In that year, at a special class for the study of “scientific nutrition” in Albuquerque, New Mexico, instructor Hazel Parcells, D.C., N.D., Ph.D., introduced the topic of worms in a most visual manner. She showed the class various preserved specimens of internal visitors that had been passed by patients undergoing treatment for a wide array of unresolved health problems. I have never forgotten the sight of those little bottles and what was in them. For the next two years, I refused to eat in any restaurants—for reasons you will read about later in this book. But most important, what I learned from Dr. Parcells was that worms, from the microscopic amoeba to the feet-long tapeworm, are a fundamental root cause of disease and are associated with health problems that go far beyond gastrointestinal-tract disturbances.Since then, in my own nutritional practice, I have observed that many unexplained health conditions often disappeared when parasites were eliminated from the body. These conditions included environmental illness, skin problems, digestive problems, excessive fatigue, hypoglycemia, arthritic-like aches and pains, long-standing obesity, and even depression. Painstaking examination of my clients’ food habits, favorite ethnic restaurants, lifestyle, and travel records often revealed the source of infection. I was amazed to find that a patient’s travel history was often the missing key to unlocking the underlying cause of persistent flu-like symptoms, allergy, fatigue, gas, and intermittent constipation and diarrhea. Frequently, symptoms started shortly after a vacation to tropical islands, Asia, or South America or a camping trip in Colorado.A central problem in solving the parasite puzzle is that many parasite-based illnesses can mimic diseases more familiar to the doctor. Roundworm infection, for example, has been misdiagnosed as peptic ulcer, and amoebic colitis is often mislabeled as ulcerative colitis. Chronic fatigue syndrome and yeast infection may really be a case of chronic giardiasis, while diabetes and hypoglycemia can be caused by tapeworm infection. The majority of doctors in the United States do not recognize parasites and therefore do not diagnose them. This may be due to the fact that parasitology courses in medical schools are usually offered by a tropical diseases department, giving rise to the notion that parasites are primarily a foreign concern. Furthermore, the inability of technicians to accurately diagnose the problem compounds the issue. The parasites’ own reproductive cycle, in which eggs or cysts are passed at irregular intervals, also makes accurate diagnosis tricky.Today, parasites and the diseases they cause are no longer found just in faraway places like the tropics—places that conjure up images of poverty and poor hygiene. Some parasites, like giardia and pinworms, are, in fact, found predominantly in temperate climates. These organisms as well as others have become more prevalent in America because of a number of modern-day factors discussed throughout this book. The idea of harboring a living organism inside our bodies is repulsive and unpleasant to dwell upon, but learning all we can about our unwelcome boarders is the only way we can discover enough to evict them and rid ourselves once and for all of their presence. This is one situation in which ignorance is definitely not bliss.knowledge is the keyIn this book I will tell you:which twentieth-century factors have increased the parasite risk in the United States.what parasites look like and what symptoms to look for.how parasites are transmitted through food, water, animals, sexual practices, and day-care centers.how parasitic infections should be diagnosed. In the following chapters, you will find answers to such questions as:What are the most effective natural and medical treatments for parasitic infection? How can my family and I prevent infection and reinfection? What lifestyle and travel precautions should I take? The answers to these questions and many more may surprise and even shock you. But this book was written to do just that—awaken you, your family, and your doctor to the fact that parasites are alive and well and thriving in America today. I wrote this book because as a health-care professional I am worried...worried that so many individuals are not well, even though they are following a balanced diet and a good exercise program, and are unable to find the reason. I am convinced, after dealing with patients for more than eighteen years, that one of the major reasons for the chronic ill health we are seeing today is none other than parasites. After you read this book, I urge you to share it with as many people as you can. Pass it on to your neighborhood health clinic, the hospital emergency room, your personal physician, and to veterinarians, day-care centers, outdoor clubs, restaurant owners, and travel agents. Education is the most potent weapon against the parasite epidemic. It is my hope that Guess What Came to Dinner? will become a wake-up call for every individual living in America today.1what you don’t know can hurt youApril 1999: A tiny parasitic worm that bores into tadpoles and disturbs cells may be the cause of a large numbers of mysterious frog-leg deformities.September 1998: The parasite Cryptosporidium causes widespread water contamination in Sidney, Australia.May 1997: Business executives in Houston, Texas, fall prey to the parasite cyclospora after eating infected produce.April 1997: Centers for Disease Control estimates between 100,000 and 1,000,000 cases of Giardia lamblia occur each year.October 1994: NBC television program Dateline reports that unnecessary deaths and illnesses throughout New York City are the fault of cryptosporidium-contaminated water.November 1993: According to a National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID) press release, parasites in the U.S. affect millions.Spring 1993: As reported by the NIAID, 100 deaths and more than 400,000 residents become seriously ill in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, after the parasite cryptosporidium contaminated the water supply.January 1993: Several deaths and hundreds of others fall ill to an E. coli outbreak in Washington due to fast-food hamburgers.September 1992: Pork tapeworm cysts show up on the brains of four orthodox Jews: A feature story by the Associated Press zeroes in on the mystery.Spring 1991: U.S. suspects Gulf War GIs are carrying the parasitic disease leishmaniasis and stops them from donating blood!Believe it or not, Americans today are host to more than 130 different kinds of parasites, ranging from microscopic organisms to foot-long tapeworms. Practically every imaginable kind of exotic parasitic disease has been found on our shores: African sleeping sickness, toxoplasmosis, schistosomiasis, giardiasis, amebiasis, filariasis—unpronounceable to most of us, but potentially deadly nevertheless. Even malaria is making a comeback, with cases of this mosquito-borne tropical disease being reported as close to home as New Jersey, Virginia, Texas, and California.1Parasites are an insidious public health threat in the United States today. Insidious because so very few people are talking about parasites, and even fewer people are listening. Insidious because of the common misconception, among physicians and the general public alike, that parasites occur only in tropical Third World countries, areas traditionally associated with malnutrition and poor hygienic practices. Insidious because physicians do not suspect, and therefore do not recognize, classic symptoms. And insidious because even if physicians are aware of the threat, most use outdated and inadequate testing procedures, which result in underdiagnosis.Lack of education is to blame. In the United States, physicians are simply not educated in parasitology and are, therefore, inexperienced in recognizing common clinical symptoms. A doctor’s introduction to parasitology may come from a chapter here and there in a microbiology course in medical school. If parasitology itself is taught at all, it is as a specialty in the department of tropical medicine at some universities. Courses in these departments are not often elected by medical students who believe they will not be seeing “tropical medicine” problems in their general practices in the United States.Yet, times have changed and parasites are much more widespread than previously believed. An article appearing in the June 27, 1978, Miami Herald states that a nationwide survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in 1976 revealed that one in every six people selected at random had one or more parasites. The survey also pinpointed a parasite known as Giardia lamblia as the number-one culprit in water-borne disease. Louis Parrish, M.D., a New York City physician who specializes in parasites, wrote in 1991, “Based upon my experience, I estimate in the New York metropolitan area that 25 percent of the population is infected....”2 Projections for the year 2025 suggest that more than half of the 8.3 billion people on Earth will then be infected with parasitic diseases.3Often regarded as opportunistic invaders, parasites have no respect for class boundaries. The publicized illnesses of celebrities like actor Yul Brynner, who became seriously ill from trichinosis after eating in a well-known New York restaurant, and tennis pro Martina Navratilova, who was affected by cat-transmitted toxoplasmosis, illustrate that we are all susceptible. Contaminated well water at some of this nation’s most prestigious ski resorts has led to outbreaks of giardiasis, which goes to show that parasites can occur even in the seats of the mighty.how did it happen?A number of seemingly unrelated factors unique to the late twentieth century have contributed to the unrestrained parasite epidemic and added to the increased risk of parasitic infection. Some of these factors include:the rise in international travel.the contamination of municipal and rural water supplies.the increasing use of day-care centers.the influx of refugee and immigrant populations from endemic areas.the return of armed forces from overseas.the continued popularity of household pets.the increasing popularity of exotic regional foods.the use of antibiotics and immunosuppressive drugs.the sexual revolution.the spread of AIDS.Let’s examine each of these factors in detail.INTERNATIONAL TRAVELToday more than ever before, American tourists are traveling to remote areas of the world. An affluent society is a mobile one. In 1990 alone, more than 390 million people worldwide made international trips for pleasure and/or business. Over 15 million of them were Americans, and half of these Americans traveled to Third World countries. More adventurous trips to exotic destinations like the Caribbean Islands and remote areas of Mexico, South America, Asia, Africa, China, and Israel have replaced the old-fashioned grand tour. We know that smallpox, cholera, and the plague have been eradicated, so we’re safe. Not so.Unfortunately, travel can be fatal. As mentioned earlier, malaria, the most virulent of the parasitic diseases, is on the rise both here and abroad. Malaria is a ruthless killer, responsible for up to 2 million deaths per year in over 100 countries. The rise of this disease is partly due to the fact that mosquitoes have become resistant to DDT and other insecticides. And drug-resistant parasites have been found throughout South America, East Africa, and Southeast Asia. In parts of Thailand, the organism is resistant to every known drug, and the problem now presents a medical crisis.4There are many documented clinical cases of travelers, including businessmen and foreign exchange students, who had been infected in other countries but did not manifest symptoms until after their return home. In some of these cases, the disease was properly identified but by that time had progressed beyond the point of medical intervention, and the patients died.5For the majority of us, less threatening conditions such as bouts of diarrhea are expected souvenirs of world travel. We pack out Pepto-Bismol right along with our passports and think nothing of it. Unless we go to St. Petersburg, Russia. Formerly known as Leningrad, this is “Giardia City” to visitors who go home with severe diarrhea, fevers, chills, muscle pain, and intestinal bloating. The cause: The city’s tap water is infected with Giardia lamblia, a microscopic parasite. Visitors to Nepal are routinely stricken with severe cases of giardia, unaffectionately referred to as “Delhi-Belly.” Giardiasis, however, can do more than ruin your vacation. Symptoms of this illness can persist long after the vacation has ended. And it has been known to set the stage for unexplained conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome and chronic fatigue.6, 7Besides returning with photographs of the Great Wall of China, travelers there return with internal hitchhikers in the form of roundworms caused by widespread agricultural use of night soil (human waste). Eggs are not found in stool samples until sixty to seventy-five days after initial infection. By this time, they have gone through their pulmonary phase, creating such symptoms as cough, wheezing, bronchial spasms, and increased mucus. Symptoms of the intestinal phase may mimic those of peptic ulcer but require an entirely different treatment regimen. The International Travelers Hotline of the Atlanta-based CDC warns those traveling to Africa of the danger of bathing, wading, or swimming in fresh water that may be infested with blood flukes, which cause a disease called schistosomiasis. This infection not only produces fever and chills, it elevates the number of specialized white blood cells known as eosinophils and causes abdominal pain with enlargement of the liver and spleen. Often, these symptoms do not show up until four to eight weeks after exposure, at which time the symptoms may be attributed to more familiar diseases with similar symptoms.WATER CONTAMINATIONOne of the greatest parasitic hazards is contaminated water—not only abroad, but right here in this country. A highly infectious parasite, Cryptosporidium parvum, is increasingly being recognized as the number one cause “in waterborne outbreaks in the U.S.A. and in children in tropical, developing areas...and [that] resists chlorine treatment and is easily spread in hospitals, daycare centers, and in impoverished households,” according to a 1995 article in Parasitology Today.8In 1993, malfunctions in the water systems of Milwaukee, among several other cities across the U.S., led to water-boiling advisories or shutdowns.9 Apparently the invisible water-borne parasite cryptosporidium invaded the city’s water supply, resulting in the illness of 400,000 people and the deaths of more than 100. According to a report that same year, one in four drinking water supplies tested in fourteen states was found to be contaminated with cryptosporidium. The second most prevalent water-borne parasitic infection in the U.S. today is the Giardia lamblia parasite. David Addiss, M.D., a medical epidemiologist at the CDC, noted that giardiasis was mostly seen fifteen to twenty years ago in international travelers who drank from contaminated water supplies or in campers and backpackers who sipped from “pristine mountain streams” contaminated by infected forest animals or raw sewage. But that’s all changed. Giardia—that traveling companion from Nepal and St. Petersburg—first surfaced here in the West and then spread to the Northeast, Southeast, Rocky Mountains, and California Sierras. Steven Rochlitz, Ph.D., states in his book Allergies and Candida that “Giardiasis may be a rampant problem in the U.S. today since 50% of our water supply is contaminated with it and, unlike bacteria, it is not killed by chlorination.”We must also factor in that hundreds of small water systems throughout the country do not have adequate purification systems. And in urban as well as rural areas, streams and watersheds can become contaminated through infected human sewage. Understandably, people are opting for bottled water and water filters to avoid parasitic infection. However, the fact remains that parasitic infection via contaminated water may be much more prevalent than we think. A release from the National Institute of Health says “many parasitic diseases such as giardiasis and cryptosporidiosis are not always reported to health authorities, so that we suspect the extent and impact of parasitic diseases in the United States is underestimated.”10DAY-CARE CENTERSRampant parasitic infections exist in day-care centers nationwide. A 1997 Wall Street Journal article quoted one New York City pediatrician who was experiencing a definite increase in giardia outbreaks and “attributing the cases to exotic vacations and the growth of daycare for diaper-aged children.”11 When a child becomes infected in any of the ways discussed in this book, he can easily infect others in day-care centers. The Centers for Disease Control has estimated (estimated because exact figures are not known) that every year, day-care centers are the source of nearly 20,000 cases of giardiasis. A recent CDC survey found that in Fulton County, Georgia, approximately 25 percent of all children in day care were infected with giardia; in New Haven, Connecticut, the rate was twice as high at 50 percent; and in Anaheim, California, the rate of giardia in one day-care center increased from 3 percent to 43 percent from 1981 to 1991.12Since the disease can be spread through direct contact with infected feces, day-care centers provide a ready environment for transmission and have been referred to as “the open sewers of the 20th Century.”13 Because giardia cysts lodge under the fingernails, the infection can be inadvertently spread from one infant to another during diaper changes. It is also spread by inquisitive toddlers touching dirty diapers and then contaminating toys, drinking faucets, and themselves with their frequent hand-to-mouth contact. According to Dennis Juranek, D.V.M., chief of Epidemiology and of The Parasitic Disease Branch at the CDC, roughly 20 percent of parents become infected themselves while caring for their sick children.IMMIGRANTSParasitic infection is more predominant in the tropics and the subtropical areas of the world because of climate and unsanitary conditions. Parasites are much more prevalent in immigrants from areas like the South Pacific, Mexico, South America, Asia, and Haiti. Not counting illegal aliens, over 16 million foreign students, diplomats, travelers, and immigrants entered the United States in 1989. During the 1970s, at the end of the Vietnam War, this country was inundated with a massive influx of immigrants from Southeast Asia. Many of these refugees and immigrants came from parasite-infested areas. While they may not be exhibiting symptoms of the diseases, they may still be carriers, just as infectious as those with full-blown symptoms.Recent immigrants to this country, who often are unskilled and unable to speak English but willing to work for minimum wages or less, very often seek jobs in kitchens where today there are no obstacles to their employment. I have observed that the majority of restaurant workers no longer wear hair nets or gloves when handling food, and often the same person who serves your food takes your “dirty” money. With this lack of basic sanitation in the restaurants of America, the exposure rate to infectious diseases is mushrooming.Immigrants also find work as babysitters or housekeepers. An Associated Press article that ran on September 3, 1992, carries the headline “Worldly Worms! Traveling Parasites Leave Latin America to Afflict Big Apple.” The article goes on to describe how four orthodox Jews in New York City were mysteriously stricken with seizures. CT scans showed pork tapeworm cysts in the brain, a most startling revelation considering these individuals never ate pork due to their religious dietary laws. A Centers for Disease Control formal investigation discovered the single common denominator in every case history—a housekeeper originally from Central America, where pork tapeworm infection is relatively common. The investigators theorized that the housekeepers unknowingly carried the tapeworm eggs and infected the Jewish families by contaminating their food.ARMED FORCESSoldiers stationed overseas can harbor a variety of parasites. More than the troops come home. Headlines such as “Disease Is Cited in Veterans Suit”14 and “Gulf War Parasite Halts Troop Blood Drive”15 graphically bring the awareness of parasitic diseases from foreign shores to America. From 1963 to 1975, thousands of troops returning from Southeast Asia were carrying parasite-induced diseases that affected their intestines, lungs, liver, and central nervous systems.16In 1985, five Vietnam War veterans filed a class-action medical malpractice suit against the Veterans Administration for failing to properly test, diagnose, and treat them for parasitic filariasis. Filariasis, a disease endemic to southeast Asia, is caused by worms carried by infected mosquitoes and can lead to swelling of the lymph glands and a condition known as elephantiasis. Lawyers and doctors for the five veterans contend that hundreds to tens of thousands of Vietnam veterans may be suffering from this disease. More recently, 540,000 American troops returning from Desert Storm were told not to donate blood because of the incidence of the parasitic disease leishmaniasis, spread by desert sand flies. Diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever are symptoms of this infectious disease. Unexplained illness with fever may be a sign of a new species of leishmaniasis found in the Gulf vets.PETSPets are hosts to numerous parasites and are unexpected spreaders of disease. There are 240 infectious diseases transmitted by animals to humans. Of these, 65 are transmitted by dogs and 39 by cats. There are 110 million dogs and cats living in America’s households, making exposure to some of these diseases significant. Dogs, for instance, are known carriers of Giardia lamblia, which is easily picked up through ground water or from contact with animal waste. A regularly dewormed cat or dog can still pose a threat since the infections may recur. One pet-food manufacturer says that 89 percent of all house cats in America sleep with their owners. Dog and cat roundworm, hookworm, and cat-transmitted toxoplasmosis can become severe in pregnant women and children and even life threatening in immunocompromised individuals. Phillip Goscienski, M.D., head of the Infectious Disease Branch of Pediatrics at the Naval Regional Medical Center, finds it remarkable that these diseases are almost always unsuspected and unrecognized.17

It was informative to let one know about parasitic invasions in the body and some extent of the harm they can do, but it doesn't tell you how to rid them. Also, this is already a small book, but the information could have been condensed on far less pages. Redundancy made me weary when hoping to receive new information in a new chapter.

Wow, who knew there were so many folks walking around with parasites?! This book has recommended foods you can buy and easy home remedies to eliminate most parasites. Her other book, the Fat Flush Plan is a helpful secondary book. Many ailments are misdiagnosed, such as Arthritis, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Multiple Schlerosis, Asthma, which symptoms disappear after eradicating parasites. Modern medicine is little trained to test for or diagnosis this rampant health problem. Read this in self-defense!

I have suspected for 20 years that I have bugs that traditional medicine just can't test for. My high potency probiotic (VSL#3) has been helpful, but not enough. Am trying their YC liquid, this book has convinced me to back off the sugar, and am doing the parasite pills and liquid tinkture. If of helps, then it will be worth it. She is so knowledgeable about different parasitic bugs and what they affect in your body.

I usually like her books but this was not what I expected and to be honest, a lot of talk without real ability to diagnose or treat.

Great information and I love that she gives you the names of stuff to take. I wish she would have been more in depth of the treatment though.

I recently heard Ann Louise Gittleman interviewed and was interested when she referenced this book. It clarified a lot of information about different types of parasites and their effects on the body.

Useful info on a subject most Americans know nothing about.

This book sort of spooked me in learning about the critters in my own body. Useful information to be aware of.

About the Author

Danielle Walker is the author and creator of the popular Paleo-food blog Against All Grain (www.againstallgrain.com). Having to deal with a diagnosis of an autoimmune disease at only twenty-two years old, and unable to alleviate her symptoms with conventional medicine, she eventually came to the conclusion that she had to remove grains, lactose, legumes, and refined sugars from her diet. When she realized that there were many others out there struggling with the same issues, she combined her culinary skills and love for food with an equal love for journalism in a campaign to end her own agony and become a source of hope for others suffering from all types of diseases and allergies.Danielle's goal has always been to never feel deprived, but rather to feel joy and satisfaction with each bite of food she eats. She and her husband, Ryan, live in the San Francisco Bay Area with their energetic toddler, Asher, and spunky dog, Ahavah.

Danielle Walker delivers a golden gem, a winner of a cookbook with everything you need, and a purchase that's worth every penny. There are several recipes to choose from, the recipes are simple, and easy to prepare. I'm amazed that the author delivered much more than I expected. Among my collection of cookbooks, this one will remain in my kitchen as my daughter and I try new recipes. The recipes are budget-friendly, and there's something for everyone. "Against The Grain" offers over 150 gluten-free, grain-free, and dairy-free recipes. One of the reasons why I purchased this cookbook is because my daughter has suffered from an autoimmune disease with other disabilities at a very young age, and I know these recipes will be much more healthy for her. There is so much information in this cookbook, I don't know where to begin, except to admit that this cookbook is indeed a treasure. There is a total of 368 pages, and the colorful photos of prepared meals are stunning. The author has included: Breakfast; Small Bites; Soups,Salads & Sides; Main Courses; Treats For Kids; Muffins, Loaves; Basics, Sip On This, Inspiring Success Stories; and more. Since I love breakfast, I already made the Banana Porridge, a complete tasty sensation. Next, I will make the Clam Chowder as it sounds very inviting. My daughter requested the Almond Crisps, our next project. For the weekend, we selected a dinner for Saturday, Slow-cooker Sesame-Orange Chicken, and we are anxious to prepare it. The Seven-Layer Bars look incredible. As we select our new recipes, I will leave updates. Inspiring, and extremely useful. I will also be gifting this cookbook to friends and family for special occasions. I am so grateful for my selection, there is absolutely nothing to complain about. Highly recommended!

This is a great book for beginners, or for anyone looking for simple, delicious recipes. I first did Paleo about 4 years ago, but I fell off the bandwagon after about a year. It has been a decision that I've regretted everyday since. Oh well, life happens. Now 3 years later I've been serious about re-starting on the path. I have a lot of Paleo books around my house but as I began meal planning I rediscovered Danielle's book and why I fell in love with it in the first place. My most favorite thing about her book is that is has a lot of basics. These are things that are totally worth doing on a weekend to have for the rest of the week. Coconut milk yogurt, granola, nut milk, spice mixes and dressings. My second most favorite thing is that fact that most of the ingredients I already have in my house. I'm sorry, but nothing frustrates me more than when a recipe asks for some insane ingredients...either a spice, a vegetable or type of flour. I don't live in the best area to buy those things and I personally do not want to spend an hour on the internet hunting for them.I plan on buying her other two books as well :)

This is the first Paleo cookbook I ever purchased, and it is also the most loved, because of the staple recipes I have used over and over:1) Vanilla-almond granola. If you are a crunchy-breakfast cereal person like me, with this recipe you can safely end your love-affair with oat-based granola and replace it with this recipe. My only twist on this recipe is I don't use a dehydrator (and running a dehydrator for 24 hours as suggested just seems wrong to me) or keep the oven door cracked open. I cook it at 170F for 7 hours on convection bake. I probably could try it for a shorter period of time, but I don't want to screw it up (I'm at 5000 ft, so maybe that has something to do with it).2) Basic cauli-rice. This is a delicious alternative to rice-rice.3) The WORLD FAMOUS SANDWICH BREAD recipe. OMG. My hats off to Ms. Walker for this recipe. I had no idea it was even in the cookbook when I bought it, and what a pleasant surprise. 100% of the people I have given a slice of this bread to ALL seemed to have the impression that Paleo (or gluten-free) bread was just a horrible experience... until they tried this. My husband is a complete bread fiend, and I have successfully weaned him off of grain-based breads. My brother, who is gluten-intolerant, now has hope. This bread is so awesome because a) it tastes great (moist, right texture, right firmness), b) toasts easily, c) can be used in place of grain-based bread for every meal. BTW -- I have tried to make other bread recipes I found on the web, and they just didn't cut it.Anyway -- this is one of the great Paleo books that will help you on your journey to a more healthful life.
