From the Author

After moving to Montana in 1986 and trying to find out what trailheads and trail conditions were around the Flathead Valley and in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. I went to every Forest Service station I could and asked for information.  Very few of the 'rangers' could tell me what I needed to know. Could I turn around a 6 horse trailer at a specific trailhead? Was there a hitchrack? What about parking and leaving my rig for days at a time? Was there water or grass available? Was the trailhead marked? Was there a stock limit on the trail? How far did I need to ride before finding a suitable camp? What was the trail itself like? Was it cleared of deadfall and winter debris? I wrote this book after spending 10 summers riding and packing in the wilderness and forests of Western Montana. I took notes, kept a journal and took pictures.  I have been a member of the Back Country Horsemen of Montana for over 30 years. I became a horseback riding instructor and was partner in Outfitters Supply, a horse gear retail outlet in Columbia Falls, Montana.

Last summer while using this book as our guide, we trailered from MN 3 babies (horses), two dogs, and one teenager. We had the vacation of a lifetime. We rode for two weeks, 6-8 different trails at 5 different locations. Very accurate descriptions for trail difficulty, trailheads and what you will see.We even met a couple that had contributed a couple rides to help create the book - they autographed our copy 8-)).We are returning this year with Ray, our mule, to pack in to the Chinese Wall. That is the only thing they don't tell you in this book. You ride to the very edge and have to turn around a go back to camp. Quite the tease for folks who want to get away from everything.Congratulations Ms. Barnett & MT Horsemen for working together and putting such a great resource in our hands. Now if we could only get a similar book for CO, ID, UT . . .

The inspiration for this book was ten years horse packing in Montana. I used to go to the USFS stations and ask about trails and trailheads to find out if I could get in and out with a 6 horse trailer, whether there was water, hitch rails, a camp spot, grass for stock, etc. I often rode young, green horses or mules and needed to know the condition of the trail and whether it was suitable for taking them on it or if I should choose another trail.I hope this book will someday be reprinted and I am currently looking for a publisher.Carellencarellens@gmail.com
