I was really excited about the prop plane on the cover, but in reality the entire board book is about this large orange passenger jet that obviously has control tower priority because it appears on every. single. page. of the book. One would think that the stunt plane skywriting would be exciting enough to warrant its own spread, but no, there is the ubiquitous orange jet plane looming in the corner. And the seaplane has enough to worry about without the passenger jet plane crowding its airspace. Can you say bully? The end of the book is such a disappointment. For one, the final page is blank - BLANK! - as if there was nothing else to say about planes. Airports? Pilots? Bernoulli effect? ANYTHING? And the second to final page features - you guessed it - the jet plane, climbing into the sky, with the copy "There goes the jet plane into the sky." Duh! As if it hasn't been cruising smugly at altitude across literally every other page in the book. SMH.

The book is super simple with just a few words & pictures on each page, but it's perfect for my airplane loving 2 yr old grandson. We read and reread it about 10 times in a row before taking a break. It's his favorite book right now. I'll get tired of reading it before he will get tired of hearing it.

DH is a commercial pilot. This is a great intro to planes book for my 1 year old to talk about what daddy does. Cute illustrations. Longer than I expected but still a few words on each page keeps attention of the 1 year old.

Great photos, lots of pages and perfect for my 2 year old who loves airplanes! He is learning lots of vocabulary words from this book! (i.e. passengers, runway, helicopter, etc.)

Somewhere after 6 mo, "Boats" fell out of favor and "Planes" took its place as the most favorite book from our limited transportation and machine set (Boats, Planes, Trains, Machines at Work). I'm rather fond of all of these books, mostly for the illustrations which I like very much, bold blocks of color outlined in heavy, black line.Planes isn't Elsie's (8 mo) current favorite book, it's somewhere after Dinosaur Dinosaur and My Car, and somewhere ahead of Barnyard Dance and Sheep in a Jeep, but it definitely makes the list!Like Barton's other books, Planes is a sturdy board book with lovely, bold, vivid, and simple illustrations accompanying very simple text. Elsie's favorite pictures are of the orange jetplane on the blue sky, and of the people getting on and off of the plane. Often she'll let me read it through the first time, then want it again, but turn through quickly herself until she gets to her favorite pages, which she either studies carefully or hits vigorously, depending on her mood. She is certainly interested.I like all of these books for reading to babies, and recommend the board books, even if they aren't lap-sized prints. They're the same size as my other board books, and that seems big enough for Elsie.Any word from other readers on whether or not any pages were omitted in the board book version of this book? I'm curious about it.

Bought this as a birthday gift for the "one year old" grandnephew. He loved it! And so did his parents ;-)

We bought our son a toy airplane and this book is an excellent accompaniment to the toy, even they are not related or co branded. The book is designed well, has appealing colors and simple (and cute) illustrations depicting the variety of airplanes that we use, from the jetliner to the crop duster. I enjoy reading it to my son and I imagine someday it will overtake the squishy turtle and friends and baby owls and little blue truck as the book he wants me to read out loud to him.

A good book, not a great book, but a good one. The grandkids enjoy have it read to them more than once. It is a good basic introduction to airplanes for 12mo to 4 or 5 year olds.

This excellent book explains both the historical development of the Tango and also the actual dance technique of the Golden Age. I have a lot of books on the Tango and this is my favorite. I have lived many years in South America and can see that the author has spent a lot of time in Argentina and understands that culture. Thus, she has a profound understanding of the Tango, which is quite rare for a foreigner.First, the book does a great job of explaining how immigration and the various cultural / social forces in Buenos Aires influenced the development of the Tango. It is not just a dry, factual history; but rather shows how important details of the dance are based the social forces at work during the time the Tango was developed.Second, the technique section focuses on how to maintain an emotional connection between the two partners throughout the dance. It explains the posture and steps from a heartfelt place rather than merely from a mechanical approach. This helps us dancers develop a smoother, more fluid style that creates a pleasing experience for both partners.Finally, one thing I especially liked about this book was that it was not highly personal. Rather than focusing on the author’s personal life or emotional needs, it was clearly focused on the Tango. This book has become my top reference book on the Tango. Five stars!

It is rare for me to find a book on any dance that really excites and interests me. This was one of those rare books. Denniston explores the history of the tango without resorting to a list of dates and figures. Instead she focuses on the grand themes of the dance's unique history and how that shaped the way the dance developed and is viewed by its devotees. She also covers the fundamental techniques of the dance without becoming dry and boring. Instead she shows how the meaning and purpose of the dance influence the technique. Overall, this is a very enjoyable book on the tango. Not an academic book, but more a devotional book with very accessible writing on the history, culture, meaning, and technique of Argentine tango.If I have any criticism of the book, it is that the author could have offered some direct quotes or experiences from the dancers she consulted for the book. She places much emphasis on the Golden Age of the tango, how the dance developed, and the meaning those dancers derived from the dance. I enjoyed the focus she placed on these Golden Age dancers throughout the book; however, I felt she could have explored it even further and made it come alive even more if she had offered some direct quotes and experiences from the dancers she talked to. Despite this, the book is an excellent overview of the history, culture, meaning, and technique of the dance, and I greatly enjoyed it!

I just received and started reading THE MEANING OF TANGO by Christine Denniston and got as far as page 53 at which point I loved the book for its cultural details (I would never have guessed that it was not unusual for women of this period to know how to lead: there were no classes for women and, if they did not learn from fathers, brothers, etc, they learned from mothers, sisters, etc. and some women were excellent leads.) but, it turns out, I was sent a defective 2007 edition which is missing the correct text for 6 pages which have, instead, been printed with duplicates of other pages that are in their correct sequence.I did not immediately realize that this was not the edition I ordered. The 2008 edition is the only edition actually on the amazon.com website but, perhaps, amazon.com is treating them as interchangeable. In any case, amazon.com has agreed to send a replacement. I am not sure what to say about the different editions.When I get further into the book, I will add more detail to this review.

Bought this for my wife when we first started taking tango lessons. Several years later, it's been passed around through nearly the entire club and quite a few other dancers have picked up copies of their own. Worth your time if you're interested in the history of tango.

The best part of this book is Part 1 in which the author covers the history of argentine tango, its step child ballroom tango and the early preparation of dancers in the Golden Age. Inexperienced leaders danced in practicas for years before an experienced leader as a kind of sponsor would invite them to a milonga. The leader's responsibility was to be so well prepared that the follower did no wrong on the dance floor. She describes the culture of courtesy to the follower in the tanda and at the milonga and the codes. This is really the heart of the book. I also liked her review of the orchestras and their musical styles which comes in the latter part of the book.In between those two sections, the book is devoted to dance technique. As a tango dancer since 1997, I do not believe tango technique can be learned from a book-the subtleties and the connection are far and away too important. If you dance argentine tango, I recommend it for your bookshelf.Wonderfully, tango is now a UNESCO World Heritage dance. If you have read this review and do not dance tango...introduce yourself to the reality of a dance like no other.

I found Eleanor's book to be a very emotional and poignant story. She points out the struggles we have as a society and individually of dealing with end-of-life issues and appropriate care for the patient.

I wanted very much to like this book, and I did--but only somewhat.The Terri Schiavo material began to seem like filler to me and made me lose interest in the rest of the book. I followed the Schiavo case rather closely when it was in the news, and I didn't buy this book expecting more re-hash of it--but that's what I got.

You probably know Eleanor Clift, or at least know of her. On Sundays, she's the one being yelled at on The McLaughlin Group. Anyone who's seen that show knows she is a tough professional who stands her ground. This book proves it. Even in the hardest of times, Clift is a journalist to the core. She declares in the early pages that this is a love story, and indeed it is, as she records the love she shared with her husband, Tom Brazaitis, as together they faced his spreading cancer and eventual death. But it is more than a memoir.At the same time she is recording in precise and difficult detail the last two weeks of Tom's life lived peacefully in the living room of their home with the help of hospice, she tells of another story of life and death taking place in Florida--that of Terri Schiavo. Terri Schiavo's story dominated the news as her husband and parents debated the decision of continuing to sustain Terri's life. The governor and courts of Florida became involved, and then the dispute was taken to congress and the president. While Clift was caring for Tom every night, she was involved as a journalist and commentator covering the Schiavo controversy. Her husband, also a journalist, had insisted early on that Clift continue her professional commitments. She did.Now she has taken these two simultaneous events and combined them into an account that is both an intense personal memoir and a clear analysis of the hard decisions that face families when a loved one's life is ending. She gives her story clearly while she weaves in the Schiavo story in even-handed reporting. "I'm a journalist by training and instinct. That reporting is the vehicle for my journey to make sense of the physical, ethical and moral issues legitimately raised by both sides in the debate," Clift explains in the preface to the book.This is a difficult topic, but one that most of us will have to face at some point. I read excerpts of Eleanor Clift's "Two Weeks of Like" in Newsweek, where she's been a contributor for a number of years. Those selected well-written passages about a very sensitive event - the death from kidney cancer of her husband, Cleveland Plains Dealer Washington correspondent, Tom Brazaitis - made me seek out her book in hardcover. The work as a whole stands up to the strength of the Newsweek excerpts. The operative word in Clift's work is "juxtaposition" - the dignity with which Brazaitis spends his final days vs. how Terry Schiavo spends hers. Clift never comes out and editorializes about Schiavo's treatment, but by contrasting that experience vs. her huband's, she makes her point passively but no less passionately.At the very least, anyone reading this book will surely react by wanting to have living wills and medical powers of attorney in proper legal order.

The other reviewers will speak better to the great qualities of this book, so I'll echo the best of them - a wonderful read that personalizes a national story with such heartbreaking and informative reporting that truly illuminates the theme that we are a country founded on questions in search of answers. A must read for any student of our political system as well as an enlightening introduction into the culture of hospice care. One of the most important memoirs published this year.

Eleanor Clift does a great job of combining journalism and memoir. She objectively reports on the events surrounding the bitter dispute over Terry Schiavo's end of life, including the political maneuverings of Congress and the personal battle between Michael Schiavo and his wife's family. I followed that story closely as it was happening but learned new details reading Two Weeks of Life.Ironically, as Ms. Clift is reporting on a very public and tumultuous end of life experience, she is very privately living her own with the impending death of her husband; a story she tells not as a journalist, but as a wife who is losing a beloved partner. The book presents the Schiavo story from the outside looking in and Clift's own story very much from the inside looking out. It illustrates the complexity of end of life decisions and our culture's difficulty in coming to any consensus on these issues. Ms. Clift also includes some interesting antecdotes about her experiences as a journalist, including an interesting discussion with Justice Sandra Day O'Connor about her position on Roe v Wade.There is nothing superfluous in Clift's writing, which is very straightforward and clear. I recommend the book to anyone interested in reading an interesting story and, of course, to anyone who has a special interest in end of life issues.

What an absolutely perfect craft Frank Cooper has come up with in these miniature needlepoint Persian, Caucasian, and Turkish carpets! They are simple, beautiful, unusual, and portable. The miniatures are typically between 6-9 inches in width and 10-16 inches in length, and though they are quite detailed, the stitches are not impossibly tiny. Cooper uses a #18 canvas (18 stitches per 2.5 cm), which allows these little jewels to work up surprisingly quickly. The instructions are plainly written; the charts are the book's only real drawback, as they must really be enlarged on a copier to be usable by the average needleworker. But the patterns are authentic, taken from rugs Cooper has studied closely in his travels, and the color photographs and the historical background he adds to each rug's description are alone worth the price of the book.

I have a passion for Persian carpets yet I never imagined I could find a way to capture a bit of this art by making something myself. The designs in the books are lush and inspiring- each one a jewel box of oriental carpet design. The directions look fairly easy to follow though I have to confess I don't know how to needlepoint....Yet! Readers of this book may also want to check out the second needlepoint book I purchased with this one: "Tribal Design s for Needlepoint" by Gay Ann Rogers.

This is an incredible labor of love on the part of the author and it is gracious of him to share his work for our enrichment and enjoyment. The intricate designs of the rugs the author has chosen to reproduce are painstakingly charted and he has made careful notes of any small changes in color or a minor change in a detail. The charts are easy to follow, needless to say. (I'm using them for something other than needlepoint.) Also, the descriptions of the rugs the designs were taken from, the meaning of some of the design elements, the regions they were made, and stylistic differences between regions were really well written and interesting, so it was like a crash course in oriental rugs as well. Fascinating.

If you love oriental carpets and do any knitting, weaving ,or needlepoint this is a great source book. Mr Campbell charts out each carpet so you can design on any scale from minii to full size carpet. Beautiful and important work

I once had this book and somehow lost it. I made a few designs in then and found them difficult enough to hold my interest. I want to make some mousepads for christmas gifts from the patterns and I remembered that they are easily altered because of the repeated motifs. I was delighted to find it in great condition and signed by the author/artist.

I couldn't resist this book! I love oriental carpets, but of course they're expensive and require a lot of space. This way I can have the designs I love, in miniature. The rugs he chose are lovely, and the designs easy to follow, plus he provides the color numbers for the yarn if you want to use his colors. (This is particularly nice if you live overseas like I do and need to order the yarn.) I would have liked some hints on how to come up with designs for other rugs, but it's easy to figure out by looking at his designs. The book is obviously for a niche market, but if you like oriental carpets and needlepoint, I doubt there's anything out there quite like this.

What a fantastic book. It is exactly what I require. All of the patterns are copies of the genuine article. I am having trouble deciding on which one to make.

The charts could be easier. The black squares made it dificult to read but great designs

Can't wait for snow to fly and me schedule settles down so I came start this winter's project. Easy to read and follow.

This is an excellent push-pull book between 2 people whose families hate each other. Jenn refers to them as a modern day Romeo and Juliet. One could argue their families were like the Hatfields and McCoys too. James and Julia were entertaining as leads in the book. I was more pro-James than pro-Julia at times. Good storyline. Dual point of view. No cliffhanger.

If you are looking for the perfect enemies to lovers story look no further because Jenn Sterling has hit it out of the park.Julia LaBella & James Russo were raised to hate each other but what there parents never expected was the attraction they had and the connection they had from the time they were young. It definitely was a push & pull but over the years keeping what they were feeling was getting harder to keep from one another.The relationship was one that they never thought would happen but with will and determination James knew he needed to get his girl and nothing was going to stop him feud and all. I just loved watching not only these two finally admit their feelings for another but watching their families realize that all the time that was wasted by a feud that had nothing to do with them. If you are looking for a book that will leave you with a smile on your face when you see the words The End then this is the one for you.

Bitter Rival is a humorous twist on the enemies to lovers trope, and I couldn't put it down! Julia and James were raised to hate one another since they were children. Living next door to one another, and being the heirs to their respective wineries they're always near one another, but an old family rivalry forces them to "hate" one another. The problem is, both of them are attracted to one another, one of them refuses to admit it and the other is sick of fighting it. I truly enjoyed this new twist on Romeo and Juliet that J. Sterling gave us. Julia and James are perfect for one another, but there's so much standing in their way. I loved how James refused to give up on Julia, and well.. he's just the perfect guy, if we're going to be honest. He knows what he wants, and he refuses to back down. Julia on the other hand, she knows what she wants, but she has so much to lose, and it breaks my heart what she's forced to give up. When all the truths come out, and how everything plays out in this book, it was amazing. This book isn't your typical enemies to lovers romance. It's not super hateful, and conniving at first between these two at first. It's stolen glances, secret wanting, and knowing you shouldn't want the other one, but secretly wanting them instead. The family rivalry is really the story behind the "enemies" here, and it's an interesting twist when it comes out. I completely loved this book! Their families have had a feud going on for years but do both sides know what caused this feud? It’s time to get this feud over! Julia and James are so perfect together! Get this book and read it!

The hatred these families had was real, and only half of them knew the real story. I couldn’t put this book down as I was cheering for these characters to fight through this war. I was stunned that her father followed through. Hate and grudges are so strong. Jen captured that well in this story.

I love all of Jenn’s books and this one didn’t disappoint. It has a permanent place on my favorites shelf!! Loved the enemies to lovers aspect!! Modern day Romeo and Juliet with a happy ending!!

short and sweet. very relatable, sexy, fun read.

This one grabbed me from the first page. I did not want to stop reading until I reached the end. I absolutely loved the ending. Great work. I seriously look forward to your next book.
