Gerstner quarterbacked one of history's most dramatic corporate turnarounds. For those who follow business stories like football games, his tale of the rise, fall and rise of IBM might be the ultimate slow-motion replay. He became IBM's CEO in 1993, when the gargantuan company was near collapse. The book's opening section snappily reports Gerstner's decisions in his first 18 months on the job-the critical "sprint" that moved IBM away from the brink of destruction. The following sections describe the marathon fight to make IBM once again "a company that mattered." Gerstner writes most vividly about the company's culture. On his arrival, "there was a kind of hothouse quality to the place. It was like an isolated tropical ecosystem that had been cut off from the world for too long. As a result, it had spawned some fairly exotic life-forms that were to be found nowhere else." One of Gerstner's first tasks was to redirect the company's attention to the outside world, where a marketplace was quickly changing and customers felt largely ignored. He succeeded mightily. Upon his retirement this year, IBM was undeniably "a company that mattered." Gerstner's writing occasionally is myopic. For example, he makes much of his own openness to input from all levels of the company, only to mock an earnest (and overlong) employee e-mail (reprinted in its entirety) that was critical of his performance. Also, he includes a bafflingly long and dull appendix of his collected communications to IBM employees. Though written more than a decade ago, this is hands-down one of the best business books on the planet and is relevant to leaders of both large and small organizations.Here is how Lou Gerstner (LG) Saved IBM:1. Overarching strategy: At the time LG arrived, IBM was proprietary hardware- (mainframe) and software-led. However, an explosion of niche competitors were undercutting IBM’s pricing in its most profitable segments. The prior leadership and Board of Directors were planning to break the company up to make it more nimble, but LG chose instead to tightly integrate the company by making it the services-led, network-centric, open-source, integrator of choice.2. Product breadth: When LG arrived, IBM tried to be all things to all people. LG divested underperforming areas (ex: most application software) and focused on leading/emerging areas (ex: middleware).3. Customer focus: When LG arrived, IBM pushed product to serve IBM’s financial interest. LG shifted to serving customers’ interests and business processes.4. Culture: IBM was founded on strong values including: hard work, decent working conditions, fairness, honesty, respect, impeccable customer service, jobs for life. However, when LG arrived, many of these had been taken to the extreme with an obsession for perfection. In addition, morale was in the dumps and employees felt defeated. LG revitalized many attributes and removed the promise of jobs-for-life.5. Organization: At the time LG arrived, IBM was controlled by autonomous geographic (country) leaders who presided from on-high by organizing work and delegating problem solving. LG centralized strategic planning, budgeting, marketing, competitive analysis, and sales operations. LG shifted to global industry team leaders who engaged in problem solving and dug into details by constantly meeting with customers, suppliers, and employees. He retained decentralized decision making for innovation (once funded) and for engagement of customers, suppliers, and business partners.6. Business performance measurement: When LG arrived, IBM was overly focused on the income statement. LG shifted the focus to shareholder value creation by means of increasing free-cash-flow and improving customer satisfaction.7. Cost structure: Prior to LG’s arrive, IBM had made a series of modest cuts to protect its people and its income statement. LG decided to right-size quickly and completely to become best-in-class based on competitive benchmarks.8. Execution: When LG arrived, IBM was have on strategy and contemplation. LG called for bold, precise action plans deeply inspected month by month.9. Collaboration: When LG arrived, IBM was rampant with in-fighting; businesses would even bid against each other for customer orders. LG fostered collaboration through strategy and organization as well as identifying shared outside enemies.10. Leadership development: When LG arrived, high-potential leaders learned by watching. LG ensured they learned by doing. He maintained IBM’s strong practice of promoting experienced leaders from within.11. Compensation: When LG arrived, compensation was based on tenured entitlement with little stock-ownership and little pay variation for top- and bottom-performers. LG switched to a performance-based meritocracy and aligned incentives with the core strategy and desired culture.12. Mergers, acquisitions, and alliances: When LG arrived, IBM acquired and partnered with a bewildering number of companies for purposes of diversification. LG limited activity to focus on acceleration of the core strategy.13. Branding & Advertising: When LG arrived, IBM had a fractured and stogy brand image. LG centralized marketing and focused the company’s considerable resources on defining e-business.14. Technical Excellence: LG retained IBM’s commitment to technical excellence.

The marketplace dictates everything we should do. I'm a big believer in quality, strong competitive strategies and plans, teamwork, payoff for performance, and ethical responsibility. I look for people who work to solve problems and help colleagues. I sack politicians. I am heavily involved in strategy; the rest is yours to implement. Just keep me informed in an informal way. Don't hide bad information--1 hate surprises. Don't try to blow things by me. Solve problems laterally; don't keep bringing them up the line. Move fast. If we make mistakes, let them be because we are too fast rather than too slow. Hierarchy means very little to me. Let's put together in meetings the people who can help solve a problem, regardless of position. Reduce committees and meetings to a minimum. No committee decision making. Let's have lots of candid, straightforward communications. I don't completely understand the technology. I'll need to learn it. but don't expect me to master it. The unit leaders must be the translators into business terms for me."3- "After all the customer and employee and industry meetings, as well as weekend and air travel reflection, I was indeed ready to make four critical decisions: Keep the company together. Change our fundamental economic model. Reengineer how we did business. Sell underproductive assets in order to raise cash."4- "I've had a lot of experience turning around troubled companies, and one of the first things I learned was that whatever hard or painful things you have to do, do them quickly and make sure everyone knows what you are doing and why."5- "The sine qua non of any successful corporate transformation is public acknowledgment of the existence of a crisis. If e So there must be a crisis, and it is the job of the CEO to define and communicate that crisis, its magnitude, its severity, and its impact. Just as important, the CEO must also be able to communicate how to end the crisis--the new strategy, the new company model, the new culture. All of this takes enormous commitment from the CEO to communicate, communicate, and communicate some more."6- "What drives IBM's unique complexity is twofold. First, every institution and almost every individual is an actual or potential customer of IBM. In The second complexity factor is the rate and pace of the underlying technology."7- "All of our efforts to save IBM--through right-sizing i and reengineering and creating strategy and boosting morale and all the rest--would have been for naught if, while we were hard at work on the other things, the IBM brand fell apart. I have always believed a successful company must have a customer/market*lace orientation and a strong marketing organization. That's why my second step in creating a global enterprise had to be to fix and focus IBM's marketing efforts."8- "We made four major changes to our compensation system...This was all about pay for performance, not loyalty or tenure. It was all about differentiation: Differentiate our overall pay based on the marketplace; differentiate our increases based on individual performance and pay in the marketplace; differentiate our bonuses based business performance and individual contributions; and differentiate our stock-option awards based on the critical skills of the individual and our risk of loss to competition."9- "I wanted IBMers to think and act like long-term shareholders to feel the pressure from the marketplace to deploy assets and forge strategies that create competitive advantage. The market, over time, represents a brutally honest evaluator of relative performance, and what I needed was a strong incentive for IBMers to look at their company from the outside in."10- "The skills required in managing services processes are very different from those that drive successful product companies. We had no experience building a labor-based business inside an asset-intensive company. We were expert at managing factories and developing technologies. We understood cost of goods and inventory turns and manufacturing. But a human-intensive services business is entirely different. In services you don't make a product and then sell it. You sell a capability. You sell knowledge. You create it at the same time you deliver it. The business model is different. The economics are entirely different."11- "My point is that all of the assets that the company needed to succeed were in place. But in every case--hardware, technology, software, even services--all of these capabilities were part of a business model that had fallen wildly out of step with marketplace realities...The implications of this kind of leap to a company's economic model can be devastating. In IBM's case it meant the collapse of gross profit margins and the attendant changes we had to engineer to lower our cost structure without compromising our effectiveness. Yet the hardest part of these decisions was neither the technological nor economic transformations required. It was changing the culture--the mindset and instincts of hundreds of thousands of people who had grown up in an undeniably successful company, but one that had tor decades been immune to normal competitive and economic forces. The challenge was making that workforce live, compete, and win in the real world. It was like taking a lion raised for all of its life in captivity and suddenly teaching it to survive in the jungle."12- "You've probably found, as I have, that most companies say their cultures are about the same things--outstanding customer service. excellence, teamwork, shareholder value, responsible corporate behavior, and integrity. But, of course, these kinds of values don't necessarily translate into the same kind of behavior in all companies--how people actually go about their work, how they interact with one another, what motivates them. That's because, as with national cultures. most of the really important rules aren't written down anywhere."13- "In comparison, changing the attitude and behavior of hundreds of thousands of people is very, very hard to accomplish. Business schools don't teach you how to do it. You can't lead the revolution from the splendid isolation of corporate headquarters. You can't simply give a couple of speeches or write a new credo for the company and declare that the new culture has taken hold. You can't mandate it, :an't engineer it. What you can do is create the conditions for transformation. You can provide incentives. You can define the marketplace realities and goals. But then you have to trust. In fact, in the end, management doesn't change culture. Management invites the workforce itself to change the culture."14- "Thee work-a-day world of business isn't about fads or miracles. There are fundamentals that characterize successful enterprises anc successful executives. They are focused. They are superb at execution. They abound with personal leadership."15- "At the end of the day a successful, focused enterprise is one that has developed a deep understanding of its customers' needs, its competitive environment, and its economic realities. This comprehensive analysis must then form the basis for specific strategies :hat are translated into day-to-day execution."16- "Earlier in this section I mentioned that in every industry it is possible to identify the five or six key success factors that drive leadership performance. The best companies in an industry build processes that allow them to outperform their competitors vis-a-vis these success factors."17- "This next generation of leaders--in both the public and private sectors--will have to expand its thinking around a set of economic, political, and social considerations. These leaders will be: Much more able to deal with the relentless, discontinuous change that this technology is creating. Much more global in outlook and practice. Much more able to strike an appropriate balance between the instinct for cultural preservation and the promise of regional or global cooperation. Much more able to embrace the fact that the world is moving to a model in which the "default" in every endeavor will be openness and integration, not isolation."

I asked a friend for business book recommendations and this was one of them. Even though it doesn't go into painstaking detail, Lou Gerstner gives you a pretty good idea what the function and role of a CEO is.It gives you a broad overview of how he managed to change IBM's culture and strategy and the rationale for doing so. Some of the company restructuring he discusses are: changing and implementing strategy, image and brand revival, strengthening customer relationships, the buying and selling of key business segments, how to change a company's culture, operational changes and managing top level executives.From reading the 1-star reviews on Amazon it is my understanding that he is unpopular with some former IBMers because he laid off a good chunk of its employees which he only gives terse recognition towards the beginning of the book. And when he does mention it he uses the clever euphemism "right-sizing" possibly as a defense mechanism to absolve himself of guilt from initiating mass layoffs. But as painful as they may be, layoffs are needed for struggling companies otherwise the entire company will be wiped-out.So if you're looking for an introductory overview of a CEO's duties and responsibilities I would recommend this book. But don't expect any detailed explanation beyond that.

I personally found the chapters concerning Charles and his larger than life contemporaries, Francis I of France and Henry VIII of England interesting, but the chapters on Charles's taxation methods and his organization of local governments boring. The book, however, seemed solidly researched, but there is an error on page 107 in the hardback version that might seem minor except for the fact that the Queen the author is speaking of is Charles's sister, Eleanor. She is the second wife of Francis I and they had no children together. The mother of his legitimate children and future Valois Kings was Claude, daughter of Anne de Bretagne. Queen Eleanor had no influence on the French court whatsoever. When she married Francis, as part of a treaty, his mistress, Anne de Pisseleu, held the power behind the throne.

This was a readable and highly enjoyable (albeit brief) examination of the rule and legacy of Charles V, whose life had enormous impact on the development of the 16th-century world. There seems to be a dearth of full-length biographies on Charles V in English (please correct me if I've missed an existing book--I'd be very interested to read it!), making Mr. Maltby's contribution to this crucial leader of the Holy Roman Empire all the more important. I was particularly interested in Charles' actions on the international front, and in this arena Mr. Maltby does not disappoint. He takes care to inform the reader in some detail of Charles' interests in Spain, France, Italy, the Low Countries, Mediterranean, and the New World throughout the rule of his expansive empire. The book's analysis of Charles' abdication is also a highlight of this well-researched work.I finished this book even more interested in the history of the period and in this fascinating ruler. Mr. Maltby's work is certainly worth your time if you have an interest in Spain and the Holy Roman Empire, or just general European history. Highly recommended.

First off, this is not a biography of Charles V. It is as the title says and what Maltby says in his Introduction, it is a history of the reign of Charles V. This glances quite a bit on Charles V, so you do see quite a bit of his life. Even more so you see his realms and the wars and laws that were enacted.For the most part this is a short and succinct analysis of this important ruler's reign. It is a bit dry and sometimes reads more like a recital of facts, but it does move well from chapter to chapter.I would recommend this book only to someone who has read a biography or is familiar with Charles V and would like a more close analysis of his reign.3.75 stars.

Concise, well written, yet too short of a book to get complete details. This is a wonderful book to get the broad picture of Charles V. More questions are raised which means further research. Fascinating emperor during extremely fascinating times. I enjoyed the book, yet was frustrated by how brief it was.

Fairly easy reading about a complex man and time. Necessary reading for those trying to comprehend the contribution of the Hapsburg dynasty on modern Europe.

It is a good short reference book for those who are interested in the history of the House of Habsburg and it's Spanish branch. Book provides ample bibliography for those who want to research subject in depth.

I enjoyed reading this biography of Charles V. His inheritance remains one of the most extraordinary events of human history. If we look at his relatives, we can see how each realm came into his possession:Maximilian --> Austria and the Holy Roman EmpireCharles the Bold --> the Low Countries and the Free CountyIsabella --> Castille and New SpainFerdinand --> Aragon, Sicily and NaplesUnfortunately, because Charles had to fight so many enemies, including France, the Ottoman Empire, and the German Protestants, he was not able to capitalize on his situation. It is extraordinary to consider, however, the possibility for unity in Europe that existed during his reign.

The book is a historical presentation of the reign of Charles V and the implications in the development of world history.

After a bit of confusion over a gift certificate I received for my birthday a couple of months back I found myself with a rather nice Amazon credit. It took some thought, but since I have been having great fun watching episodes of The Great British Bake Off on Youtube, one of the things that I finally settled on was The Great British Bake Off: How to Bake: The Perfect Victoria Sponge and Other Baking Secrets. I've spent the last month reading every word, comparing the book to a number of other "How to Bake" books in my collection and, of course, baking. Here's what I've found.The book is nicely laid out, uses an easy-to-read font and features lots of pictures, one for nearly every recipe in the book. Divided into eight chapters (Cakes, Biscuits & Teatime Treats, Bread, Pies & Savoury Pastry, Tarts & Sweet Pastry, Patisserie, Puddings & Desserts, and Celebration Cakes), each section highlights two recipes for detailed instructions that include step-by-step photos - a basic How To, and one that is more advanced. The book uses metric measurements in the UK style (spices and small amounts are given in the same teaspoons and tablespoons that we use), so you will need a digital scale. If you've not yet acquired one, good scales can be had these days for a very moderate cost. ($20 or so.) Liquid measures are in ml, which you will find on one side of your Pyrex glass measuring cup (been there for years - a couple of decades) as well as most other liquid measuring cups available in the US these days.I spent the weekend having a Bake Off of my own, specifically testing recipes and taking notes in preparation for several reviews. Let me tell you about the recipes that I tried from The Great British Bake Off: How to Bake: The Perfect Victoria Sponge and Other Baking SecretsTEST RECIPE 1 - GOLDEN APRICOT AND MARZIPAN LOAFIn choosing recipes to test, I tried to use things that I already had in the pantry. Since I had a block of marzipan that was approaching the time it needed to be used, Golden Apricot and Marzipan Loaf was an easy choice. This is a very easy to put together cake that you bake in a loaf pan, chock full of golden raisins (sultanas), bits of dried apricot and little cubes of marzipan. Gorgeous when sliced and utterly delicious with a cup of plain tea, the cake requires but one bowl and no mixer. It keeps well for about five days or could be frozen. The cake is labeled as both Easy for Children to make and Suitable for Celebrations. Grandma absolutely agrees!This is one of the few recipes in the book that calls for golden caster sugar, which isn't readily available in the US. I used Florida Crystals Natural Cane Sugar instead.The complete list of recipes included in the Cakes chapter can be seen in the Look Inside feature at the top of the page. Note that UK cakes tend to be smaller and less sweet than cakes on this side of the pond.Caster sugar is called Superfine or Bartender's here and it is NOT the same as granulated sugar, but much finer to absorb more readily. Icing sugar is the same as confectioner's sugar. Plain flour is all purpose flour. Self raising (self rising) flour is the same. Sultanas (called for in the Golden Apricot & Marzipan cake, among others) are golden raisins.TEST RECIPE 2 - SPICY CHICKEN PASTIESOur British cousins have a long tradition of pie-making using savoury ingredients that has been more or less overlooked here in the US. The Great British Bake Off: How to Bake: The Perfect Victoria Sponge and Other Baking Secrets features an entire chapter of savoury pies, virtually all of which look scrumptious, so I wanted to try one of these. Britain, of course, ruled India for a couple of centuries and the flavors of the British Raj are extremely popular in the UK, to the point that curry is said to be the national dish. Spicy Chicken Pasties reflect that heritage with a bright yellow crust and a mildly spiced chicken filling highlighted with a dab of mango chutney.The pastry for these Spicy Chicken Pasties is identical to the pie pastry I've been making for 50 years or so, save for the addition of a half-teaspoon of turmeric, which gives the finished dough a bright yellow color that is just stunning when cooked.The filling required so little in the way of expensive ingredients that I was surprised - about 1/3 of a pound of boneless chicken breast and 3 tablespoons of yogurt plus a dab of garlic, fresh ginger and a couple of spices - perfect for using up that last piece of chicken breast or providing a meat dish for six for pennies a serving.The recipe said that it would make 6 turnovers. I got 8. (The saucer I used for a pattern was probably slightly small.) This was not a labor intensive recipe at all. I made the dough for the crust and put the chicken to marinate the night before I made the pasties, then cooked the filling (it goes under the broiler for a couple of minutes) the following morning. I cannot tell you how good Spicy Chicken Pasties are! Let's just say I was in no rush to call anyone up and ask them around to share. These would be fantastic as part of a picnic lunch or, cut smaller, would make stunning finger food for a party. (Do note if you decide to go that route that the chicken filling is not entirely cooked through when you fill the pasties, so they need to be assembled at close to the last minute, though they do also reheat well.)Would I make these again? Oh yes - probably this afternoon! These are to-die-for good, 10 out of 10.Other recipes in the Pies & Savoury Pastry chapter include -Shortcrust Pastry - identical to that I've made most of my lifeBeef & Red Wine Pie FillingStilton, Potato and Caramelised Onion PiePaul's Pork Pies with Quail Eggs - neat little "hand pies" baked in muffin tins, Step-by-step PhotosSpicy Chicken Pasties - TEST RECIPESomerset Pork and Apple PieStilton, Spinach and New Potato QuicheSalmon and Pak Choi (boy choy) QuicheSmoked Haddock and Watercress QuicheWarm Crab TartRich Beef Casserole with DumplingsThree Cheese and Spinach Pie* - an unusual take on Spanikopita that uses feta, Parmesan and ricotta cheesesMushroom and Gorgonzola Twist*Recipes marked with an asterisk use purchased filo dough instead of shortcrust pastry.TEST RECIPE 3 - MARY'S CHOCOLATE ROULADEMary's Chocolate Roulade is the Technical Challenge recipe from the Puddings & Desserts chapter of the book. Chocolate cake rolled around a whipped cream filling, it looks spectacular - glamorous, delicious and difficult. Nothing could be further from the truth! I chose to make this because Chocolate Roulade is a recipe that I already knew how to make. Some years ago I happened to be sitting around watching Julia Child reruns. Julia whipped up one of these Chocolate Roulades in about ten minutes flat and made it look so easy I said to myself "I can do that!", went into the kitchen and did. If you never in your entire life learn to bake anything else, add Chocolate Roulade to your repertoire. Mary's recipe is nearly identical to mine.Chocolate Roulade requires almost nothing in the way of ingredients - some chocolate, a bit of sugar and some eggs. (Some recipes, including Mary's, include a couple of tablespoons of cocoa powder.) With no flour, this is an ideal recipe to serve your gluten-free friends and with no butter it is reasonably "safe" for dieters & others watching their weight. (You could, though it would be almost criminal, substitute a low-fat "whipped topping" for the whipped cream filling.The one thing you have to watch with Chocolate Roulade is that it is very thin and thus it is quite easy to overbake, so do keep a close eye on it. And start checking early. The recipe in the book says baking time is 20-25 minutes. In my oven it is about 16. That said, if you do overbake it a tad all is not lost. If the roll cracks too much (a little bit of cracking is normal) to look lovely on the plate, grab some pretty glasses, chunk up the roulade (you'll have lovely little "sandwiches" of cake and cream), pile the chunks into the glasses and drizzle a teeny bit of fudge sauce over. Though some nay-sayers complained of repetitions, this is my first Mary Berry book and I can tell you, I'm thriled with it. The instructions, recipe lay-outs, photos, etc., are all quite excellent. Is it worth purchasing, even for an experienced baker like myself? Yes! One thing you're going to get here is the British perspective on baking, which I've found very useful and interesting. Also, many recipes reside within this book, which are also present in my French baking book (a tome). For Easter, I decided to make Mary Berry's creme pat for a Paris Brest. However, for the choux, I chose to reference my French baking book, instead of Mary Berry's. This time 'round, that was a huge error for some reason. Should have stayed with Mary Berry all the way, which I will do next time. My only complaint is at the end of the book where the conversion charts reside. There are a few errors which I discovered. Make sure you read and read again, when referencing these charts.

If you're a fan of The Great British Bake Off, I highly recommend this cookbook! Please be aware that the recipes are using British measurements and Ingredients but investing in a digital scale and doing some research will help immensely with the success of your creations! Ready, set, BAKE!

The first two recipes are great. Each has clear, concise photos of each step as I saw in the sample I reviewed. So I ordered the book. I tried the first two recipes. Results: Perfection! However, the remainder of the book does not have photos of the step-by -step process, which a beginner baker like me needs. Plus, I'm much more interested in Mary's recipes and Paul's, not the bakers from the show. Will continue to try some more of the recipes as there are tips and insights peppered throughout! My first Battenberg cake is shown.

I'm addicted to The Great British Baking Show, love the master classes so had to have a couple of books. Made one of the "biscuits" (cookies to us) with a short crust dough wrapped around marzipan. No direction on what the shape was to be so I invited mine. The cookie need to be dipped in a hot beverage to soften but that could have been "operator error." I still love the book and as always, Amazon and supplier delivered on time. This one was a good value as I purchased it "used."

I felt this cookbook was somewhat of a disappointment. It did not have all the recipes from the show/season that I thought it would have. It does have a lot of colored photos if you are looking for that. It also has measurements in metric/grams which is the way I bake now - if you do not weigh your ingredients you might want to keep that in mind.Considering the cost of the book and the fact that many of the recipes from the shows can be found on the PBS website, I'll will not be buying anymore of the books.

Very pleased with the book. I have a digital scale that can measure in grams so with the aid of conversion ratios on the internet and the scale I have been able to follow the recipes. Lots of photographs showing the different stages of progress and helpful hints. I'm going to learn to bake better. Love the show.

I bought this for my 8 y.o. son who is obsessed with the show and (because of it) with baking. He LOVES this cookbook. The recipes are quite involved but he loves the challenge and the link to the contestants he thinks of as friends - and we have had good results. Very nice that a conversion chart (from the British metric measures used in the recipes to U.S. measures) is included at the back of the book. My son also likes the math challenge of the conversions!

How to Draw Almost Everything: An Illustrated Sourcebook Paperback – April 15, 2016by Chika Miyata (Author)I am a bit over 50 and I have never tried to draw, when I was still a kid I was told just to forget it. Now with all the adult coloring books and the doodles, I thought I would give it a try, and I am having such a GREAT time, I couldn't wait for this book to come out, (I pre-ordered it in January) it arrived today and I couldn't be happier, for someone that doesn't know anything about drawing but wants to try it, THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU. Worth every penny. I am so happy and highly recommend this book for "almost" ALL AGES. Thank you to the Author "Chika Miyata" , and thank you to Amazon for making it available.

Great handbook breaking down multiple subjects in an accessible way that is great for beginners. It is compact, and the illustrations are tiny (think quarter-size, ok not all or even most are that small, but you get the idea). I actually appreciate that because it makes the book more portable if you want to travel with it. At 221 pages, it's a great resource and I look forward to practicing my drawing skills.Critiques:1. An index would really be useful! There's so much covered, and things are nicely divided into categories. But they aren't in alphabetical order or even from most popular to less. For instance, cat is on page 26 but dog is on page 17.2. Speaking of, I wish a full page was dedicate to variations for cats and dogs, as they are likely to be more popular subjects.3. The full color pages can be difficult to read. There are some categories where the pages are a solid color, with the illustrations in a darker shade, monochromatic instead of the colorful illustrations on the majority of the pages. I would rather the color be confined to the border, leaving the majority of the page white, with the standard colors used to highlight where you can make the drawing more realistic.But overall, it's a great handbook for beginners wanting to draw with crayons, colored pencils, pens, or markers.

Easy to use. Step by step. Ms. Miyata takes you through each step from start to finish. Materials are mostly common colored pencils and most pens, with some specialty items she has preference for but reader can do without or obtain later in their drawing journey. A good start for those intimidated by drawing or those that wish to draw in a simple, easy cute-style. Encourages simplicity and removes 'overthinking'.I would recommend or gift to a friend.

My friends knowing I was a fan of Sachiko Umoto's drawing books recommend Chika Miyata's boo "how to draw almost everything". I purchased this partly to just look at the art and also as a way of developing my own whimsical style of drawing vesus my more realistic art. When the book arrived I found it filled with lots to look at and some inspirational ideas.First, the good stuff. The book is full color and author/artist Chika gives a good selection of items to try and encompass the everything the title states. Between the pages you will find animals, food, office supplies, planes, people buildings- just about anything - to practice. There isnt much text other than some simple steps, imstead relying on sequential pictures to copy from start to finish. Chika uses mixed media so some drawings may just use pen and ink while others blend colored pencils or acrylic paint.Now for the not as good. The step by step pictures don't realy help one draw better, instead just showing how a picture is built up. Which materials were used is also not explained so unless you are familair with different art mediums you may be lost at how some effects were achieved. My biggest personal issue with the book was that it was too think so ome could not flip to a page and use as reference without using a paperweight to hold the bok open. Also, in a truly personal taste I did not find Chikas art as attractive to look as Sachiko Umotos. In fact, Chikas work at times seem messy and unfinished.Over all I enjoyed my time wth this book but it is not a book I woud return to often. A fun drawing guide but not essential.

I borrowed this from the library and then I had to buy it. The examples and samples are simple, small and quick. Just what I needed. Thank you.

I bought this book for myself, but it could easily be used for young children. I love the format, the illustrations, and the quality of this book. I do a lot of crafting of handmade cards, so I'm always looking for books that can give me ideas to add something unique to my cards. I love the feel of this book, too. The texture is slightly rough.

Makes drawing so simple for our young grandchildren (and us old folk, too)!

Academic life often leads people in unexpected directions. William Irvine is Professor of Philosophy at Wright State University, Dayton, Ohio. After receiving his PhD from UCLA in 1980, Irvine taught and practiced analytic philosophy for many years before gradually losing interest in it as overly technical and removed from life. Irvine looked for other philosophical and personal options and came close to adopting a Zen Buddhist practice. He ultimately rejected Zen because it did not fit the analytic quality of his mind. Irvine then began a serious study of the Greek and Roman stoics, philosophers he never had to read during his years of philosophical study. The result was his book "On Desire: Why We Want what we Want" (2006) followed by this book, "A Guide to the Good Life: The Ancient Art of Stoic Joy" (2008) in which Irvine articulates a contemporary stoic philosophy.Irvine writes for the educated lay reader rather than for academic philosophers. He argues that an important task of philosophy is to help individuals form a "philosophy of life" that gives meaning and purpose. Without a philosophy of life, Irvine argues, "there is danger that you will mislive-- that despite all your activity, despite all the pleasant diversion you might have enjoyed while alive, you will end up living a bad life. There is, in other words, a danger that when you are on your deathbed, you will look back and realize that you wasted your one chance at living. Instead of spending your life pursuing something genuinely valuable, you squandered it because you allowed yourself to be distracted by the various baubles life has to offer."Besides helping a person to discover his or her "grand goal in living", philosophy also has the task of pointing out a path or strategy for realzing the goal. As mentioned above, Irvine seriously explored Zen Buddhism but found ancient stoicism more suitable to his character in setting out a goal and a means for its attainment.In his book, Irvine explains the need people to reflect and form a philosophy of life, the value of stoicism, and the means of practicing stoicism. He also takes stoicism out of its ancient theological and teleological (teleology means finding that nature acts purposefully) bases and restates it under assumptions of naturalism.In the first part of the book, Irvine offers a rapid overview of ancient philosophy and ancient stoicism, culminating in four philosophers of the Roman Empire, Seneca, Musonius Rufus, Epictetus, and Marcus Aurelius.Irvine shows that the "grand goal" of these philosophers shifted gradually from the reason and "eudamoneia" (a difficult word meaning roughly "virtue") of the Greeks to a goal of emotional tranquility. This, rather than the Greek goal, is the goal Irvine adopts. The goal of tranquility does not advocate supressing emotions or becoming a zombie. Rather, Irvine defines "tranquility" as "a psychological state marked by the absences of negative emotions, such as grief, anger, and anxiety, and the presence of positive emotions, such as joy."After identifying the goal, Irvine offers steps towards its attainment. He recommends living modestly, being content with what one has, letting go of the past and of feelings of remorse and guilt, and meditation and reflection on one's goals. A stoic life is internalized, which means it depends of developing what is in one's control rather than seeking for happiness in things outside one's control. To give examples from my own life. I get frustrated when my teachers and others do not rate my piano playing as highly as I would like. I have to remember that the goal of playing the piano is not to have a concert career or to impress others but to bring out music for myself and for those who want to hear. Then again, closer to home, I get angry when I spend time on an Amazon review only to have it curtly negated. I have to remind myself that I write to read and to learn rather than to seek approval from negginators.In the third part of the book, Irvine offers more broadly-based discussions of stoicism as a guide to life. He discusses the control rather than the repression of emotions such as grief, and strategies for living contentedly with others. He focuses on his own and on his reader's mortality by eloquently reminding of the inevitability of old age and death and of the stoic wisdom of loving life in its transience and letting go.In the fourth part of the book Irvine, describes again the metaphysical bases of ancient stoicism, which Irvine rejects by rephrasing stoic insights against a backdrop of evolutionary naturalism. Many readers may not be convinced by this attempt to jettision stoicism out of its original context. I think Irvine's point could be better made not by substituting one metaphysical view for another but rather by eliminating the need for a metaphysical "underpinning" for a philosophy of life altogether. The latter stoics showed little interest in teleology or metaphysics. In other words, stoicism stands of falls on its own merits and results as a philosophy and does not require a metaphysical support. This conclusion is consistent with much modern "technical" philosophy, as I understand it, which Irvine claims he no longer wishes to pursue. In the final part of the book, Irvine turns autobiographical and offers insights on what a stoic practice has meant to his own life.Throughout the book, Irvine approaches his subject with enthusiasm and with at times an almost missionary zeal. There are two parts to the story to be distinguished. The first is the value to a person of developing a philosophy of life. Convincing the reader of the value of a philosophy of life is Irvine's greater goal and, most of the time, it is the source of his enthusiasm and preaching to the reader. The second is the stoic philosophy that Irvine has adopted for himself. Here too, Irvine develops his stoic philosophy and tries to persuade his readers. But he recognizes that a single philosophy will not suit all temperaments, and that there are varied approaches to the good life. His approach has strong components of pragmatism as taught by William James.This is an excellent work of philosophy for non-specialists. A growing number of philosophers work to make their thoughts accessible, and Irvine is, perhaps, too harsh on the academic study of philosophy. The Stoics sought tranquility and a consequent joy in, and thankfulness for, the lives we have as core parts of an answer to the venerable ancient question, "How should I live my life?" In 2018 America, tranquility and joy sound like a good deal...if you can get it. I'm a retired intelligence analyst. I spent my entire professional life looking at the potential downside for American interests in the behaviors of foreign leaders and states and in regional developments that affect allied interests--and thus US alliances and interests. There's not a lot of tranquility in the national security business. It's filled with anxiety and fears and worrisome days and weeks. You get used to it. You cope.You know, though, in the quiet recesses of your mind, that "stress kills." You hear it from the Doc every12 months. "Yeah, yeah, I know, I know, I hear you, I exercise and I've got my blood pressure down, I'm making making a point of trying to reduce the amount of friction in my life, if not the numbers of stressful situations." And in retirement, you can carve out more time to think about distractions from things that get you riled up, or sadden you, or fill you with fear or anxiety when you face the encroaching reality that "all things human are short-lived and perishable," including you.Stoicism doesn't rescue you so much as train you to manage unproductive emotions and thoughts, beginning by bundling up, or triaging, your concerns according to a fundamental trichotomy--expanded by author William Irvine from a classical dichotomy posed by the Stoic philosopher Epictetus (Some things are up to us, other things are not)--of "things I have no control over, things I have absolute control over, and things I have some measure of control over." We can exert control over our goals, values, what we formulate as our life philosophy. The score arrived by the time I needed. The product was what I needed. Good deal. It is not the best edition but most productions use this for being more accessible to bigger choirs.

I was a very early adopter of Queen. I had the benefit of an avant-garde FM station in Philly, WMMR, that was always a step ahead of actual commercial releases. Listening to DJ Carol Miller's evening show I heard cuts from Queen's first album prior to its commercial release. As soon as I heard those iconic guitars I was hooked! I had never heard guitars with that unique timbre before. It, along with Freddie's unique vocals, created totally unique sounds from a bunch of guys who knew how to rock. Bought "Queen" the day it was released and couldn't get enough of it, until the release of Queen II. The second album told a story and Freddie's writing wove the songs together into a tapestry of good vs. evil. I just, some 40+ years later, pulled out my original LP and gave it a spin. The songs were every bit as wonderful as I remembered but the sound quality was not up to the quality of the music. Virtually no bass, ragged treble and compressed dynamics.What to do? Search on Amazon for a remastering, of course. And there it was... a 2011 remaster job by none other than Bob Frickin' Ludwig. Those of you who are into the audio scene will recognize Ludwig as a mastering legend. And, yes he did his magic on this CD. It is UNBELIEVABLE! Yes there is bass, very appropriately balanced. The ragged treble is gone and the stereo effects of the original have been optimized. Dynamics! Yes they are here too. This remastering has brought this wonderful music back to life with clarity and drive. Kudos to Mr. Ludwig. It must be satisfying to do what he has done with this classic album and restored the beauty and bit of the original album as the guys played it.Buy this CD. I feel guilty that I paid so little for it.

It is a great album but I received one that was faulty. They gave me a replacement that had the same problem. So, be careful when choosing to buy this album. I think a whole bunch of them weren't "pressed" right. The music is unbelievably great, as I have it on CD already. I just happen to be nostalgic when it comes to certain records, such as this.

UPDATE: Received replacement. The hole in the replacement is also too small. This indicates a manufacturing error on a larger scale. I was able to push it onto the rod to fit--but buyer beware. You can see how wonky it sits on my record player.Original review: The hole on this record was TOO SMALL to fit onto my record player. Ordered a replacement, if it also doesn't fit then it is likely a larger scale manufacturing issue and I will update this review.

Queen II saw the band finding their theatrical vision that would grow into fruition on A Night at the Opera. Simply put, the great moments were here and this is probably their heaviest album but the great songs weren't quite here yet. Due to what the band would become, Queen II is an intriguing listen especially if you didn't discover their early albums until later like I did. And you have to respect their ambition. This is certainly stronger than all of the '80s albums sans The Game and in the ballpark of News of the World. "Seven Seas of Rhye" is the most well known song here and for good reason. It is the most developed song and along with the very good "The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke" and the short ditty "Nevemore" really shows what would come. Otherwise, you have moments of absolute brilliance in the heavy as sin "Ogre Battle" and the epics "Father to Son" and "The March of the Black Queen". "The Loser In the End" is very good and is one of the better Roger Taylor tracks and the emotional "Funny How Love Is" is strong as well.. "Some Day One Day" also really plays like a template to the excellent Brian May tracks that would emerge later in "'39" and "Long Away". And for these reasons you can see why this is the favorite of long time fans which I totally respect. Queen II is very interesting and is a grower but if you're a newcomer you may want to start with A Night at the Opera, A Day at the Races, or Sheer Heart Attack before you get to this one.

It's been said by many reviewers here, but I'll say it again: Queen 2 is the band's best record. I love or really like all of Queen's records but this one is just amazing. I think that other Queen records seem to always have that one song (or more than one if we're talking Hot Space...) that just didn't speak to me; which I attribute to the their adventurous musical nature and unique sound - which is a good thing. However, on Queen 2 every song is just perfect.

Am I the only one who loves "Funny How Love Is"? Try singing along with it. Anyway, what can I say about this masterwork. This album has a certain something about it, just like the follow-up release, and the one after that. Like "Led Zeppelin IV," this mish-mash of styles just works. Honestly, how many other bands can (a) sing this well, (b) write such great songs, (c) play their instruments so well? How many? Listen to this record, you unbelievers. You lords and lady creatures. Then wonder why you ever bought an ELP record.

I purchased this Deluxe Version hoping the remix would brighten up the sound, as all the generations of CD I've owned of this album seem to have lost something as compared to the LP versions that I owned in the 70s (especially Procession). Well, I don't hear too much of a difference on side White compared to the previous generations of the CD, but side Black definitely sounds brighter, namely, the huge intro to March of the Black Queen, which for my ears is what most makes this album worth owning. So I'm pleased.The additional songs are pretty cool. I won't describe them but I'll suggest they're worth owning, moreso that the extras on the Hollywood Records release. Actually, If they'd included an instrumental mix of Millionaire Waltz on A Day at the Races, I'd have purchased that one as well.
