Really enjoyed this book, I think it's my favorite Lauren K Denton read so far! She has great character development with the right combo of love, loss, growth and change. The story follows three generations of women–a mom, her teenage daughter, and her mother. She tells the story from each women's point of view, which I love. Her descriptions had me picturing the exact location of Jessie's shop, Sumner's home on the water and the entirety of Glory Road. I connected easily to the story and loved every page. This would be the PERFECT spring break or summer read, you won't be disappointed....except maybe when you've finished and have to move on to read something else!! ;)

Thank you to Thomas Nelson and NetGalley for the advanced copy of Glory Road by Lauren K. Denton.I have read both The Hideaway and Hurricane Season by Lauren K. Denton and she's quickly become one of my favorite authors when it comes to women's southern fiction. I absolutely adored both previous books and had a hunch Glory Road would become a favorite of mine as well. This book felt a little different from The Hideaway and Hurricane Season, but in very good ways.Glory Road follows Jessie, Evan (Jessie's fourteen year old daughter), and Gus (Jessie's mother). Jessie and Evan had moved back to her hometown of Perry, Alabama, several years ago after her marriage crumbled.Jessie opened her gardening shop, Twig, and finally feels like herself after years of struggling to be someone she was not. She's closed off her heart to love after her divorce, but this summer might prove to be one that will open her heart back up. A close high school friend, Ben, reenters her life and then she meets Sumner when he casually walks into her gardening shop one day.Evan is entering into the summer before her freshman year in high school begins and helps in her Mom's shop frequently. She is determined to hold onto her unique personality and not to be changed by the world around her. This summer opens up a world of possibility for Evan, and she's determined to make the most of it.Gus is a stubborn, witty homemaker, always cooking up something in the kitchen. She's a widow, living next door to her daughter and granddaughter. She is not afraid to share her opinion and is always trying to steer Jessie towards love again. This book is sweet, full of summertime nostalgia and glimpses of the south. I enjoyed the way the book was narrated - it was so well-written and magical. I loved seeing both the similarities and differences in three generations of women throughout the story. The characters were so raw and intentional - Jessie's struggle as she worked through her emotions from her past and the love that she could experience now, Evan's discovery of who she is and how she always turns back to family. I really connected with her and saw pieces of my fourteen-year-old self in her. And then there's Gus. Oh, Gus. She had to be my favorite character. Her stubbornness and humor had me laughing out loud! She is determined and reminded me so much of my own grandmother.Glory Road was such a beautiful story. The descriptions were spot on and had me visualizing everything from that red dirt road, to the rain drops falling during Jessie's evening runs. The small details were incredible as well - before each chapter began, there were quotes from gardening books. This was such a lovely addition and some quotes were so fascinating! I learned a lot about gardening from this book and it made me want to start planting one.Sumner's and Ben's interactions with Jessie were believable and well-written - the struggle in Jessie's emotions and how her backstory is revealed throughout the story and not simply spelled out in the beginning was such a great writing choice. The way Lauren draws out her characters in such a personal way makes all of them seem so real. Gus had me laughing, Evan had me reminiscing, and Jessie had me feeling: peace, sadness, heartbreak, fear, love. This is such a heartfelt read and definitely worth it to pick up!!

Lauren’s books are the kind you want to finish in one sitting. Her first book, The Hideaway, was my favorite book last year and I quickly picked up her second book, The Hurricane, and devoured that one too. This book was the perfect mix of family and romance. Her stories and characters stick with you long after you finish the book. She’s quickly become one of my very favorite authors and I can’t wait to read her future books!

I gave Glory Road 5 stars because it's a beautiful story about family, love, new beginnings and sad endings sometimes. That's the way life goes. I love the setting, the characters and the plot. I highly recommend Lauren K. Denton as a fine writer any girl or woman would enjoy reading.

I always enjoy books by southern authors since I grew up in the South. Lauren Fenton wrote of three women in a family. I loved that each of the women had a voice which made for a richer story line. It was a wonderfully written book. Loved it!

Laughed and cried,, learned things about plants and flowers and also about myself. No one has reached my soul like Laura since Fannie Flagg.

Couldnt wait until her next book came out!! I read Glory Road in about 8 hours, loved it! Now Ill anxiously await the next one.

Mom really enjoyed this book. This was the first Lauren Denton book mom has read. I get all these romance and christian novels for her. She loves to read and this book was no exception. I know when she loves a book because she will read it in a day or two. This book was read in a day and half. In addition, I am on the hunt for more Lauren Denton novels.I never tell about the book itself as I DO NOT want to spoil anything for another reader. Mom may give me a synopsis about the book but I never talk about the story line. Hate it when someone tells me something about the story that occurs 3/4 the way thru a book or a reviewer tells me they do finally get married. I don’t want you spoiling my reading and I do not want to spoil your reading when it comes to a good book. I figure it you are wanting to know a little about the story, you can read the synopsis that Amazon and the author gives you.I figure you need to know if someone enjoyed reading the book or if it was poorly done. This one was an enjoyable read. She will telling the other ladies in the Beauty Shop Book Group about Lauren Denton.

I had read others reviews and I am not one to shy away from traditional versions of fairy tales. In fact, I prefer them. But, the addition of the gun and the description of "slashing" was a bit too much for me to read to my preschool class. I did see it is suggested for 5 and up. I would probably say 7 or 8. The illustrations were beautiful, but it was not very well written for keep a child's interest regardless of age. I will have to keep l looking for a good one.

A bautiful book. note, its a longer tale and more appropriate for 5 and older. Beautiful pictures and sticks true to the original storyline. If you don't mind the sight of a hunter with a gun then you will be ok with this book.

The art work is better than most. There is several non-traditional elements to this version. IE the woodsman calls the wolf "sinner"Before he dispatches him and cuts out granny and Lil' hood... The inclusion of the word evokes a moral tone and seems like a non-sequitur. IT IS a morality tale but the wolfs morality should be static, and needs to be static, to dialogue about Little red's trail obedience. Weither he "sins" (missing the mark in archery) or not he is a WOLF who eats red meat, it's his nature. SEE the title 'little red riding hood and the sweet little wolf'

I'm a nanny. I got this for my kids for Halloween. I remember reading an edition almost exactly like this one when I was little! Its the perfect amount of "scary" for my kids, but might not be a great fit for all young children, depending on their sensitivity. This is the traditional tale of the wolf eating the grandmother and the girl and the huntsman cutting them out of his belly, complete with pictures. It was fine for us, but I know some families for whom this would have been "too much too soon."

Parents vary on the version of Red Riding Hood they want to share with their kids. So, let me say up front, I wanted the one where the grandma gets eaten (not hides in the closet); where Red Riding Hood gets eaten (not rescued at the very last minute) and where the wolf gets killed (not runs away). If this is NOT for you, pick another version. Personally, I get mad when grandma hides in the closet (what....and doesn't jump out to intervene between her granddaughter and a ravenous wolf? She's either deaf or heartless......) I think Red Riding Hood needs to get eaten (natural consequences are great learning lessons.) And unless the wolf is killed and hauled off by the woodsman to be hung on his door, how do you know for SURE that he'll never, ever, ever return? My daughter is 3 and this is one of her very favorite bedtime stories. The illustrations by Trina Schart Hyman are lovely, with little homages to her Mimi hid within.

Beautifully illustrated classic story book! My 2.5 year old daughter loves it. I like throwing extra commentary of what can happen to a young girl if she does not obey mommy's directions! LOL

I read through the reviews and product details and was led to believe that this would be the book and disc. We only received the disc. I can't figure out where to get the book now. We love the story and wish we had the book as well. I would love to rate this item higher, but the misleading information prevents me from doing so. If you plan on purchasing the book and read along disc. This item is not that.

Don't talk to strangers unless you want very bad things to happen. This is the fairytale as it was told to me as a child. The author/illustrator tells it like it is and doesn't sugar coat it. When i was in elementary school i fell in love with her illustrations in Snow White, so much so that i checked the book out of the library often. One day it was checked out by someone who never brought it back. I found & bought that book decades later and relived my fascination with the beautiful, dark pictures which mirrored the rendition of the fairytale. I am thrilled to find other tales illustrated by Trina Schart Hyman and happy to add this one to my collection.

Common Ground on Hostile Turf: Stories from an Environmental Mediator

From Booklist

Government representatives versus grassroots rebels; ambitious developers versus environmental defenders; hunters versus herders; Native American tribes versus New Age interlopers. Throughout the country, life seems to be a constant battle of opposing forces, as too many people vie for too few resources. When initiatives involving hot-button issues such as water rights, toxic-waste disposal, and antipollution regulations move from the theoretical to the actual and bureaucrats descend from their ivory towers to set up camp in one’s backyard, the potential exists for a colossal clash of wills. Into the fray step intrepid mediators like Moore, whose job it is to help break stalemates and defuse tempers. An environmental and public-policy mediator, Moore has managed conflict resolution across an impressive and impassioned array of controversial subjects. Offering specific case studies from nearly a quarter century on the front lines of civic confrontations, Moore engagingly profiles the qualities required to help individuals and groups make critical choices and come to consensus, painlessly and respectfully. --Carol Haggas

"An environmental and public-policy mediator, Moore has managed conflict resolution across an impressive and impassioned array of controversial subjects. Offering specific case studies from nearly a quarter century on the front lines of civic confrontations, Moore engagingly profiles the qualities required to help individuals and groups make critical choices and come to consensus, painlessly and respectfully." (Booklist)"Moore's examples are varied and compelling, and offer instructive lessons on resolving the critical issues that face the West as population and mobility increase and resources dwindle. Her voice is passionate, reasoned and articulate, yet seasoned throughout with the vulnerability she deems so essential to conflict resolution." (High Country News)"...inspiring...hybrid instruction manual and memoir..." (Publishers Weekly)"engaging and thoughtful... teases out some of the lessons she has learned about getting people with sometimes radically different backgrounds and perspectives to come together and undertake change." (Strategy and Business)"To read Common Ground on Hostile Turf: Stories from an Environmental Mediator is to pass many delightful hours 'being there' with Lucy Moore....It doesn't hurt that much of the turf is the spectacular terrain of New Mexico, captured beautifully in Lucy's simple, unobtrusive prose" (ACResolution)"follows the gratifying and sometimes frustrating twists and turns inherent in Lucy Moore's career as an environmental mediator....the stakes are high and the conflicts dramatic enough to make it thought-provoking for a general readership....Moore offers a series of stories of her own that are often riveting as they unfold." (Santa Fe New Mexican)"[Common Ground on Hostile Turf is] about successes, failures, and outcomes that contain elements of both. It's about helping to build relationships of trust in order to undertake collective action to further a common purpose, but also—not incidentally—for the sake of the relationships themselves." (New Mexico Mercury)"Alternative dispute resolution is one of the main impulses in American law today, and this is notably true in environmental law. Lucy Moore, a creative and successful mediator, takes us inside the negotiating rooms and shows how listening, respect, and opening up are not homilies—they are the sturdy foundations for building true and lasting results." (Charles Wilkinson University of Colorado Law School)"For three decades, Lucy Moore has opened my heart and mind with her stories. She brings to life those times when 'trust and respect among adversaries are possible' and offers us a path forward critical to our future. Regardless of the troubles people find themselves in, a way opens when we can tell our stories to one another—and when we listen." (Gail Bingham President Emeritus, RESOLVE)"Lucy Moore is an environmental mediator with decades of experience in the American Southwest and great stories to tell. In fact, storytelling is the key to her success as a professional mediator and facilitator. As she explains with great impact and poignancy, the only way to help people enmeshed in difficult resource management conflicts is to get them to share their stories. Newcomers to the field will learn invaluable lessons from Lucy's firsthand accounts." Having lived in Northern New Mexico for twenty years I was surprised and delighted to hear some back stories about the recent history of the area.Lucy Moore tells about events that have shaped our lives in this area in ways that bring the people and events into focus without sugarcoating the difficulties of changes in populations, environments and the interactions of diverse cultures. IT is is ongoing and she does not tell us about conclusions and fixes but how this ongoing search for mediation really works.

Lucy is a very very wise and fine environmental mediator - a founder of the field, and a rare soul who walks her talk. This book is a gem, an opportunity to spend time with Lucy, glimpse her magic and steep in her remarkable yet humble insights. But it is her gift as a story teller that draws you in and lights the west on fire- and you finish the book with only a inkling of how much you have just learned. Read it, and then treasure it.

In each of the 10 stories contained in this collection, Lucy Moore provides vivid descriptions of the physical, social, psychological, and emotional terrain that constitutes the "hostile turf" and the mediation processes used in the search -- sometimes futile -- to find common ground. A remarkable achievement in a compact volume.

Had to read this for a class, and still managed to enjoy it thoroughly. The stories presented provide lessons and insights in a palatable way, and their sequence creates a nice arc.

Common Ground on Hostile Turf is a book of great stories, and as Lucy Moore points out, stories are fundamental to successful mediation and facilitation. As a mediator, I was captivated by the book was intelligent, instructive, and entertaining.

Really good

I live in the area and I knew Molly and her family. I didn't know all they were doing so the story told me the rest of what I didn't know.

The author was spurred to become a mediator in environmental disputes by sitting in on a community trying to come together over water. New Mexico had a fraught history of water rights disputes, but now wells were being contaminated by too many septic tanks. Native peoples and towns as well as agriculture were at odds but a strong tribal leader, Governor Viarreal, held a general meeting on tribal land so he could control matters - no press, no mentions of existing legal suits - then when that day's meeting was over, a welcome lunch was served to all. Seeing how the community that talked together, worked together, and ultimately benefited everyone, the author began a quarter century (to date) career of mediation. We are told that the mediator may receive confidences by one side or other which must always be kept private. There may be co-mediators. With cross-cultural tensions, industry and poverty, ecology and toxic waste, there were plenty of disputes in the author's area. She found however that being funded by a foundation, however benign, made her suspect in the eyes of traditional people who felt their way of life was at risk. They could not move away while incomers could. Some people were concerned to know who she herself was, where her family lived, what made her so interested in other words. The situations explained are so potentially complex that a reader may not read all the detail; focusing instead on the broader picture of sheep grazing rights in the green mountains, or water rights grievances when environmentalists tried to ensure that a river would retain rights to enough water still to make it a river. However if you are into local politics or social work, there are some firm lessons to be learned - even that the method of getting people to introduce themselves around a group table won't be the same for every meeting. Many home owners are too busy to want to take time to argue around a table, preferring to hold an entrenched position and get on with the work of survival. The author's group of mediators developed a mission statement and set of policies for press, record keeping, responsibilities and other issues. Amazingly she says that developing these regulations took 'a gruelling two and a half years' so the message would be to start early and agree a few basics before anything more complex occurs. But then, committees are often that way. She found one person on an environmental issues committee who sat through all the discussions in 'bad faith' intending to throw water on the results and sabotage any consensus. Again, committees can be that way. Persons like this are not going to change.Although the author's field had been natural resources disputes, she was later asked to mediate on the issue of educating tribal children. Her work with local people had made others see her as fitted to mediate in this area. She made sure to have diversity in the mediation team. Some observers were permitted at this time, including a high school student who told her elders that they looked like kids squabbling over candy. The author felt that observers might encourage posturing. She learned that historical trauma remains with many people regarding their ethnic community, making them innately suspicious of outsiders.Looking at a community with a toxic waste pile of uranium tailings from a bankrupt company mine down the road, poisoning aquifers and blowing dust, the author shows us why intervention is needed. Yet when she was called in, the group planning a cleanup just wanted her for 'hired guns for crowd control' at meetings with the community. The agency was filled with initials, acronyms and scientific jargon. The local people pointed out that when the mine opened, they hadn't known much, hadn't known the questions to ask. Now they were better educated on the topic. Such issues are all part of the mediator's challenges. The final part presents a summing of up lessons learned, which are related to the locations of the book but could be adapted. Anyone in this field could learn a lot. I am not giving a higher rating because at times the story seems too personal a memoir and too involved in the minutiae - which to the author, may be the point, but to an uninvolved reader, slow down the story and make us want to skip ahead to some kind of resolution. A good book to team with this one, for people keen to explore tribal and environmental issues clashing with pollution problems, would be Peter Matthiessen's 'Indian Country'.

Enjoyed the book, very intriguing plot

The Red Hotel opens with testimony before a congressional committee stressing the necessity of shared information between the intelligence community and hotel chains for the safety of their customers. This scene alternates with scenes of a terrorist bombing at a hotel in Tokyo. Dan Reilly, the VP-International for Kensington Royal Hotels, departs Washington for Tokyo to assess the damages to their hotel. After viewing the devastation and the number of fatalities, Reilly submits a plan to the home office to deter future attacks. Gathering a panel of security consultants that includes a former CIA official, a former FBI official, a military strategist and the owner of a company of mercenaries, they outline security upgrades for the hotels. These are based on threat levels, with a red hotel being in imminent danger of attack. The Tokyo attack is tied to Russia’s plan to return to its’ former greatness under the rule of President Nikolai Gorshkov. As a young KGB officer during the re-unification of Germany, Gorshkov felt betrayed by his superiors and is now in a position to not only exact revenge, but to also test NATO’s ability to defend its’ members borders.Dan Reilly’s background includes time in military intelligence and a position with the State Department. Having a contact within the CIA, he is able to discover the identity of the Tokyo bomber and his ties to Moscow. Reilly is resourceful, analytical and a capable adversary to Gorshkov and his plans.Ed Fuller has the experience with an international hotel change and his co-author, Gary Grossman, has written some engrossing thrillers. Together they have produced a thriller that throws you right into the action and the tension builds to a final confrontation that will leave you breathless. In the closing acknowledgments this is revealed as the first book in a new international thriller series. This opening story will have you anxiously awaiting more.I would like to thank NetGalley and Beaufort Books for making this book available for my honest review.

Red Hotel is a gripping and shocking thriller that smacks of real life. Russia wants to get back much of the land that it has lost during the last century. How to do it - The action centers around the director of an international hotel chain. Somehow he has detected a Russian plot to undermine NATO involving terrorist bombings and other dangerous and risky activities. Red Hotel reminds me of Cussler, Flynn, and Thor, some of the best in the business. Have fun and get ready for a crazy and unpredictable ride.

This is one of those books where you could take it or leave it. The storyline revolves around terrorist attacks on so called “soft targets,” in this case an upper end international hotel. How to anticipate these attacks and keep guests safe is the goal as well as identifying the culprits.I felt the book had too many characters to keep track of, jumped from place to place and never really explored the background of the main character. Still if you enjoy a good thriller this one may be for you. All in all not a bad read.

I received this from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.DNF @ 18%I really didn't connect with this one, and at almost a fifth of the way in, some semblance of a plot should be apparent, characters should be developed, and the book should be drawing me in. None of that happened, and it was becoming a chore to pick this one up.One star, plus an extra one for the outstanding descriptive prologue.

Red Hotel is a fast moving exciting look into the international hotel business. It is a wonderful spy thriller and I would recommend it to one and all. Great job guys. Looking forward to the sequel.Debby

'I was consumed by the story - and it stands tall as an outstanding read amongst anything I've read.'The part where ... was BRILLIANT! I was feeling totally relaxed that ... and then Boom!

The storyline begins with a congressional hearing where Dan Reilly, VP-International for Kensington Royal Hotels is asking for access to communication between the intelligence community and hotel chains for purposes of keeping their guests safe. This would be the same information that already is shared with the airlines. But before any significant issues are addressed, the meeting is interrupted when a hotel in Tokyo is bombed. From there Red Hotel takes you on a roller coaster ride around the world making you hold on to your seat for dear life.. I can definitely see this book being made into a film. It has the characteristics of a Tom Clancy Book. The entire book weaves in and out of surprising twists and turns to culminate with an explosive ending. As the first book in a series, I highly recommend reading Red Hotel. Can’t wait for the next book.

What can I say about a book which has been a well known and influential American classic since well over a hundred years? I guess I could start by telling my personal relationship to the story. I get my mail in a town called Ramona, where some of the significant events of the story took place. I live in the nearby San Pasqual Valley where other significant parts of the story happened. I have a close friend member of the Kumeyaay nation, original inhabitants of the area, who tells me stories of his family related to events described in the book. There were many unpleasant happenings. For example, his grandmother's band dug a pit in which to hide the nubile daughters of the village whenever sentries warned that white men were approaching. They would put the girls in the pit and pile boards and brush on it to save them from being raped. I attended the Ramona Pageant in Hemet a number of times. So the story as a whole lies close to my person. With all that,, I have some quibbles with the book. The particular copy I purchased from Amazon is a "print on demand" version which has none of the standard front matter. The story starts abruptly on the back side of the title page. There is a brief and somewhat inaccurate summary of the story on the back cover. As for the story, while it presents itself as historical fiction, it actually descends in large part to the level of political propaganda. Rather than giving a realistic view of the period, it cherry picks the worst possible cases and aggregates them as representative. Not to say that the Indians were always treated well by the white settlers. San Diego County had more than its share of scoundrels, whom Ms. Jackson describes in exhaustive detail, but that is only part of the story. She stated openly that her purpose in writing the book was to stir up the American public to treat the Indians better -- a worthy cause given the general course of events in the latter part of the nineteenth century -- that she overdid it in many instances should not deprecate her for her effort, but should warn us not to take it all too seriously as fact. Important to remember there never was a half-Indan half-Scot woman named Ramona, nor an Indian named Alessandro, nor a rancho owned by Señora Moreno. These are all just frames on which to hang various historical incidents in an effort to create a story. Many of the results are not cohesive.Altogether an interesting tale with good local color of the time. But to be redd with caution.

Greatly edifying novel. Author Jackson was as strong an advocate of Native Americans as a white Midwest society woman of her time could possibly be (read the terrific Introduction to this edition), and the Native and Spanish points of view of the “American” colonization of California, as filtered through her pen, make a fascinating read. RAMONA was made several times as a movie. One was by DW Griffith & can be seen on YouTube; readers should also see the newly available 1926 RAMONA starring Dolores del Rio—in which the heroine conveniently develops amnesia about her years as a Native (!), duplicating white America’s own historical amnesia...

Great insight into the lifestyle of women of the late 1880's. Though it is fictional, this drama was the novel of its time that gave romance tears and sadness. Though Ramona changes her life to join a penniless, uneducated peasant-boy, I found the romance a bit ridiculous. Maybe created to entertain housewives you were unfulfilled in their life or to confirm that their lives were plentiful. A foolish girl alters her life after glance into an Native Indian boy eyes that she perceives to be love at first sight. I did not understand why she thought her life would be blessed with joy and not extreme hardship. Why would anyone with any sense dump Felipe who is stable and caring for someone who turns out to be unstable. The story is reminiscence of Jane Austen's "Sense and Sensibility". The Marianne character in particular wherein she meets the grounded Colonel Brandon then drops him for the the suave John Willoughby who later drops Marianne for a beautiful heiress. Then she recuperates in the care of Colonel Brandon who she marries.

The author writes a painful story featuring the mistreatment of Indians by "Americans" in southern California, after it became part of the US. Her style is rather stilted, and highly romantic, but sustained my interest enough to finish it. She wanted this book to be the "Uncle Tom's Cabin" for the Indians [Native Americans]. I don't think either book has completely obtained its objective; or if they did, we have forgotten.

From Library Journal

The Book of the Dead is a collection of writings that were placed in tombs as a means of guiding the ancient Egyptian soul on its journey to the afterlife. The Papyrus of Ani, which is reproduced here, is one of the most important and beautiful of the surviving papyri. Damage in the 19th century seriously confused its sequencing and the relationship between text and illustrations. Here for the first time the scroll is presented in its proper sequence and in its entirety. The English text is placed immediately underneath the corresponding hieroglyphs, and the reproductions are faithful to the originals in all their glowing color. A critical purchase for any serious collection of materials on ancient Egypt.Mary Morgan Smith, Northland P.L., PittsburghCopyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review

-- NAPRA Trade Journal, Fall 1994 This magnificent book is the first complete presentation of the Papyrus of Ani, featuring graphics that reveal beautifully the texture of the original papyrus, coupled with the translated text. The original papyrus, on its discovery, was cut into sections for transport. The careless cutting of uneducated workers left the manuscscipt almost indecipherable, and to date only sections of it have been made available to the public. Computer imaging allowed the papyrus to be pieced into its original state, and a faithful translation was then possible. This document is precious not only for its historic significance, but also for its glimpse into the ancient Egyptian religion and its teachings about the passage from life to death. Commentaries and other notes make this work even more accessible. A spectacularly beautiful work of devotion. -- Publishers Weekly, August 1994 The Papyrus of Ani -- The Book of Going Forth by Day, created around 1250 B.C.E., is the best surviving example of some 200 texts comprising the funerary scrolls that accompanied deceased Egyptians into the afterlife. The Egyptian Book of the Dead: The Book of Going Forth by Day presents the complete papyrus, photographed from an 1890 facsimile edition, with an English translation by the late Raymond O. Faulkner. -- Library Journal, November 1994 The Book of the Dead is a collection of writings that were placed in tombs as a means of guiding the ancient Egyptian soul on its journey to the afterlife. The Papyrus of Ani, which is reproduced here, is one of the most important and beautiful of the surviving papyri. A critical purchase for any serious collection of materials on ancient Egypt. -- Robert S. Bianchi, Archaeology March/April 1995 The Egyptian Book of the Dead is a remarkable volume. It is based on the Papyrus of Ani, which, with the exception of the Rosetta Stone, is the most famous Egyptian object in the collections of the British Museum. Its fame is due in no small part to the quality of the illustrated vignettes that rank among the masterpieces of ancient Egyptian painting. . . . . . . I, for one, would hope that readers will henceforth refrain from relying on Budge's outdated editions and turn to this volume instead. The price, under $25 dollars paperback; the quality of the large-format plates, several of which include foldouts; the authoritative translation based on that of R.O. Faulkner, which is considered in the opinion of many experts to be one of the best translations, and commentary by Ogden Goelet make this book a must for all libraries.

This book has a replica of one of the most famous scrolls of the dead. Long ago when Egyptians paid dearly for a scroll, a scribe purchased a highly detailed scroll of the dead that survived in a clay pot, found nearly two thousand years later. It is the best preserved scroll ever found to date and is reproduced and translated in this book that allows us to see the Egyptians "afterlife" beliefs and traditions. It is a fascinating piece of history I am grateful to have been able to read and study.

I bought the hardcover version, secondhand, and it is in pristine condition as the seller advised. Now, the book itself has fabulous pictures and texts that correlate - these create a window to the past and the future. The artistry of the papyrus is beautiful and knowing these were real people that lived thousands of years ago...amazing.

While this book is written so as to be useful to scholars, it's a wonderful book even if you aren't one. The reproductions of the original papyrus are beautiful in their own right, and the translation is quite poetic. Even if you don't understand all the obscure mythological or cultural references (and who does?), it's fascinating reading/looking. It makes a great coffee table book, which is a good thing considering that it's too tall to fit in many bookshelves. As I understand it, this translation is far superior to the older ones, in a wonderful presentation, save that such a large and lavishly illustrated book really ought to have been published in hardcover. Most of the chapters are actually meant as spells to be recited by the spirit of the deceased, enabling it to pass through the dangerous parts of the underworld to become immortal, and then revisit the world of the living in spirit form (i.e. "go forth by day"). It's worth reading even the more scholarly non-illustrated sections of the book derived from other versions of the papyrus; there are some real hidden gems back there, such as the existence of a Chapter For Remembering All The Other Chapters.

The ancient Egyptian bible, everyone who could afford one was buried with one. This is a new version, and has English translations on each page with color images. It is a guidebook for the deceased person to follow to find his way to the afterlife to live on forever. The Egyptians were not obsessed with death but with obtaining the perfect afterlife. Sound familiar? By the way I do agree with the excellent reviews already here. But, to make it accessable to Western eyes, I think NOT to refer to it as a sort of "Bible" is a bit confusing I think. The ancient Egyptians studied it, tried to memorize it, and took it with them in their sarcophagus if they could afford to, in order to have access to it when they awoke and needed to start their journey to the West (afterlife). It held all they needed to know to get there safely. This version, I understand, is the best new one ever and most accurate translation. Fascinating just to go through, the art is wonderful.

I got this book as it was cheaper than hardback, but the print and graphics are on par with the hardback. If you are into ancient Egyptian art I highly recommend this book.

Anything about Egypt is something I must have! This is a huge book and filled with great knowledge.

Lovely. I recommend this version to anyone interested in the Papyrus of Ani/Egyptian Book of the Dead. :)
