A nice general guide to Jewish values, though sometimes a little too general to hold my interest (which is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5). I recommend reading this along with (and preferably before) Telushkin's Book of Jewish Values- this book gives you the forest of general concepts, Telushkin gives you the trees (by applying these concepts to the specific details of every day life).

I only read one chapter of this book: the one on trustworthiness and found full of logical fallacies and fuzzy thinking. For instance it lists, as an example of hyprocrisy, that the Swiss government claimed neutrality during WW2 yet profited from business with the Nazis. The only way this would be hypocrisy was if the Swiss claimed to be against the Nazis and THEN profitted. Of how about the one that says that a family that lied to a family member about their terminal condition "assuredly extended her life." That makes no sense. There are many other such example in this single chapter rendering the entire book unreadable for me.

Good, basic information about grief support. I'm a social worker by training (but not a therapist) and have extensive experience in leading and facilitating group process. This little book (99 pages) has some solid information for those who've never led groups.I'm a hospice volunteer and we're starting a bereavement support group so I've found the ideas helpful, but nothing that's really new. If you've led even basic groups, you will already know most of this information--particularly if you've experienced the kinds of personal loss and grief the author describes (and, who hasn't if they've over the age of 35?).The layout of the book, particularly capitalization, indentation, etc. are odd. It makes me stop reading to figure out what's being communicated. The book could have done with someone to do copy editing and layout. This appears to be a vantage press (or at least a very small press) product that was done with little editorial oversight. Still, it's a valuable contribution for those in need of entry-level information.

This is s very well-written, helpful resource for anyone thinking of starting a grief support group. Covers all the basics as well as the complex reality of bereavement.

This book covers so much and as a griever myself I thought this book touched on some areas that other books seem to avoid. I found the information very helpful. Starting a group has more to it than I first thought. I will be much more successsful in my endeavors for having read this book.

As a hospice chaplain and pastoral counselor I conduct Grief Support groups. This book is a good read for those who are spiritual companions.

I was already set to facilitate this small group, but needing some additional help and advice.

Excellent book to help one facilitate a grief support group

I bought this because we started a new grief support group. It really doesn't give enough good guidelines for starting a group in a small community--advertising the group--getting people there. It often refers to his other book which is disappointing.

I am using this for training on facilitation of a grief support group. It is a great series and has been very helpful. Dr. Wolfelt is a great mentor.

Self-admitted trainspotter and railway fan Christian Wolmar wrote the evocative book "Fire & Steam" as both a history and a rehabilitation of the railway system of the United Kingdom. Once the pride of the country and the sign of its technological superiority over any other, the current state of Britain's railways is positively dismal.Wolmar relates the initial technological discoveries and the subsequent building of the enormous railway system in the United Kingdom, truly one of the greatest building projects of the 19th century and still an inspiring "wonder of the world". Thousands of miles of railway track connecting every imaginable city and town created (and were in turn aided by) a boom of economic prosperity, united the country in terms of integrating markets, and fostered the development of stock exchanges and joint stock companies to run them. The train finally caused city gardens and urban agriculture to disappear as milk, butter, and many other basic products could now be shipped from the countryside to the city before spoiling - even leading to the invention of the tradition of fish & chips in every British town. It also allowed the creation of a unified time standard within the UK, as well as internationally, when Greenwhich was declared the earth's meridian.Of course these developments proceeded in the typical 19th century capitalist manner - enormous waste of investment through building competing parallel lines, a similarly huge loss of life through accidents and unsafe practices (most of which affected the railway workers rather than passengers), and large class differentials in transport. Nonetheless, the railway system played an important economic role in for example the crucial coal industry, as well as doing a fantastic job transporting troops in both World Wars. A government rationalization of the railways reduced the many small and inefficient competing companies to four, divided by operating regions, in effect creating local monopolies. Instead of restructuring the railways, the government commission led by a certain Beeching decided to dismantle a large part of the total rail system, paying no heed to the important social role played by rail infrastructure and the effect on local economies. Never mind that nobody would ever come up with a plan to remove roads in rural areas due to lack of intensive use!Poor investment and bad decisions on the government's part subsequently enabled the Thatcherites to undertake an even more disastrous privatization of the British railways. They came up with a plan where the various competing companies would lease rolling stock from a single private train provider, and try to compete on fares and schedules. Of course all this did was create an enormous chaos on the railway tracks, a complete lack of any strategy or organization for future planning, and a consequent high degree of inefficiency in investment. This in turn led to consistent losses on the part of train companies, which of course had to be compensated for by the British taxpayer. The result was that the British government has spent billions of pounds on propping up supposedly private companies, whose directors and managers are nonetheless paid market rate wages, while being forced to practically renationalize the rolling stock provider which had no chance at ever making money.The once so superior British railway now has much less electrification than any other major railway system in Western Europe, is less practical and more expensive, and the total government cost has actually gone way up since privatization. Nonetheless this has not stopped neoliberal-inspired governments in other countries, including the Netherlands, from undertaking precisely the same botched privatization scheme, with equally disastrous results. Despite traditional party support for nationalization, the Labour Party under the Blair leadership has not undertaken any significant action on the railways, except for building the equally faux 'private' Channel tunnel connection.This shameful story of mismanagement and ideology demonstrates how something as traditionally inspiring and important as the British railways can be systematically destroyed if not led by a strong and enterprising government, one that recognizes that trains are far more environmentally beneficial, far more fuel-efficient (if modernized), more egalitarian, and perfectly viable. The only regrettable aspect of the book is that Wolmar does not go into the railway unions and the strikes more in-depth; they are mentioned, but only in passing, and the life of 20th and 21st century railway workers is not really analyzed. But aside from that, this book is a great history of the British railways.

My copy of this fine book contains a few dozen blank pages in the middle (a problem with an errant printing press), but reading on either side of the lacuna prompts at least a four-star review. Covering the earliest beginnings of the railways -- Britain's gift to the world -- Wolmar blends history and anecdote in a fluid, very readable style. Without the railway, urban development may never have happened, and the material wealth which rail networks around the world have generated is inestimable. From goods to troops to families en route to the English seaside, the carrying capacity of the train was a wonder. Christian Wolmar evokes its spirit perfectly.

If you are a Train buff, and British, and especially if your preference in Historical accounts is detail....you will devour this book. A little too much detail for me, but a reliable historical work.

An excellent history and a very good read

I found it very interesting. Detailed to the right level.

In the preface, the author explains that this book attempts to combine a description of the history of the railways and their social impact in one easy-to-read volume. He concedes that this necessarily means omitting some developments that railway enthusiasts might normally expect to find in a conventional railway history book. For example, there is not a lot here about locomotive or other railway developments, though they have been well-documented in plenty of other books. The author wanted to illustrate the social impact that railways had, which has always been about much more than getting from A to B. Overall, I think it fair to say that the author has largely succeeded in his aims, although some aspects of the social impact are missing, just like a lot of the railway developments.Much of the book focuses on the nineteenth century, which saw the birth of the railways and the development of the network. During this period, the politicians tried not to interfere in the running of railways once built, though they still had to sanction the building of each new line. Indeed, during the periods of most rapid development, parliamentary business was often dominated by legislation pertaining to railway construction. With the railways came a host of other problems involving safety of both staff and passengers, staff working conditions and a myriad of other issues. The twentieth century began with the railways in a dominant position, but the situation wasn't as bright even at the time as it is sometimes depicted. The first of two major wars (in which the railways played a vital role) began the long period of government involvement (some would say interference) in running the railways that has continued ever since. Some government involvement was necessary at various times but it certainly hasn't all been beneficial. Beeching's butchery of the network was a gross over-reaction. The privatization of the nineties has also been problematic to say the least, although as one who travelled extensively on the railways in the seventies and eighties, I don't remember British Rail very fondly either. Still, the Channel Tunnel eventually got built, as did the high speed link to St Pancras and the author suggests, probably correctly, that the railways still have an important role to play in Britain's future.The social impact is easy to forget, but Britain was a very different place 200 years ago. The author points to holidays away from home, commuting to work and the development of the football league among many things that couldn't have happened when they did without the railways, though these things would have eventually happened anyway. When it comes to shopping, the author points out that while freight trains were able to allow local shops to stock a wider range of products than before, passenger trains allowed people to head for the nearby town or city to see a wider range of shops, so the effect was two-way. Many other examples of the social impact of railways are given throughout the book, though they are limited to the practical effects. Although Charles Dickens and John Betjeman both get mentions in the main text and there is a bibliography for further reading near the back of the book, the author makes no real attempt to explore the impact of railways on general literature or other cultural influences, but the author couldn't cover everything.All in all, this is a fascinating book. Historians and railway enthusiasts may disagree about what has been included and what omitted and they may also disagree with some of the author's expressed opinions, but there is plenty of interesting reading here, whether you're familiar with the history of railways in Britain or not. The author was clearly firing on all cylinders when he wrote this book, letting off steam when he needed to without ever going off the rails.

I don't need to even talk about the genius of Hal Foster or how great a comic Prince Valliant was. You already know that. I'll tell you about the book. It is HUGE. Bigger than any of the IDW Artists Editions. The quality of the printing is astounding. You can see every fine ink line. The artwork is photographed in color, even though it's ink on paper, so you can see all the paste overs and yellowing on the originals. It's like seeing the real thing. The binding on the cover is extra thick, with a cutout that the drawing shows through. Included in the box is an incredible poster of one of the Sunday inks three feet tall. To look at this, you'll need to clear the dining room table and settle in for hours. I can't imagine this book being topped. It's worth every penny.

"Prince Valiant (in the Days of King Arthur)" by Harold "Hal" Foster is considered a masterpiece of comic strip adventure art, perhaps THE masterpiece of the medium. Since its debut in American newspapers in 1937, this tale of the Prince of Thule and his adventures as a knight of the fabled Round Table and the legendary kingdom of Camelot has enthralled generations of readers. Over the decades, this ongoing saga of chivalry and romanticism has been reprinted by many publishers in many varied formats. American publisher Fantagraphics has produced two separate series collecting this classic newspaper strip. The first was a 50 volume trade paperback series, published from 1984-2004, which collected Mr. Foster's entire artistic run of his strip, from 1937 through to 1971. This series' final 10 volumes contain the last work of Mr. Foster, then the work of his successors, artist John Cullen Murphy, and his son, writer Cullen Murphy. Fantagraphics' second reprint series was more ambitious and began in 2009. This collection was published in hardcover and reproduced Mr. Foster's full newspaper paged illustrations from the original proof sheets used to reprint the strip, giving this series' contents an especially high level of quality. While not reprinting a complete story arc of the strip, this book features sections taken from throughout the nearly four decades its creator envisioned the adventures of Thule's favorite son.To be honest, enjoying this massive tome can be a bit of a challenge. Its physical size demands an effort on the reader's part to respect what it offers. But for this reviewer, turning the pages of this book was a thrilling experience. The reproduction of the original artwork is stunning in its clarity. For example, a page titled "The Tyrant," strip #81 from August 28, 1938, displays Prince Valiant's rival then friend Arn, Prince of Ord, facing the cruel King Sligon, in the former castle of Valiant's deposed father, Aguar. Reproduced at its full size, it is a wondrous work of illustrative art. Not only can one see the precision of Mr. Foster's rendering technique, the reader can also see the physical construction of a "Valiant" Sunday page. Further, this book reveals how Mr. Foster would sometimes cut individual panels from a large illustration board to better manage drawing a particular scene of action or drama to later reconstruct a full newspaper page continuity. This volume shows these amazing pages in all their glory; the paste-ups of the strip logo, the yellowing of the aging pages, but most importantly, the wonder and the majesty of "Hal" Foster's artistic genius.As an added bonus, this volume comes with a giant reproduction of an iconic original page from the strip's second year of publication; strip #71, "The Song of the Singing Sword," first published in newspapers on June 19, 1938.For this reviewer and long-time fan of the "Prince Valiant" strip, this beautiful book is something to savor and cherish for years and years to come. It is a major monetary investment, but I can sincerely say from the bottom of my heart that the "Prince Valiant Fantagraphics Studio Edition" was worth its price.This book comes with my highest recommendation.

This book is a gorgeous and valuable book, and it is big. Despite my 4 star rating, it is a must have book for serious collectors of Hal Foster's work, but it has some real and serious flaws.The biggest is the complete lack of documentation: There is an interview with Foster and reproductions of over 150 pages of Prince Valiant scanned in color from the original art. That is all. Nowhere does it tell you how big Foster drew his originals or anything else about them. My limited research indicates that the image size on Foster's Prince Valiant pages varies from about 38 inches tall by 29 inches wide in 1939 down to about 34x23 inches in 1970. I don't know if earlier pages were drawn larger, but I do know that 1935 Foster Tarzan page originals are only about 26 by 19.5 inches, and the difference in original size is undoubtedly a contributor to the more refined and finished look of the Prince Valiant pages. Plus, in Prince Valiant, Foster was working on his own creation, not "work for hire". The Poster included with the book is not full size, but reduced. It would be nice to know the actual dimensions of the original art. Most of the pages in the book are reproduced about the same size as they were when published "full page size" in Sunday comic sections of newspapers, but some were larger in their original newspaper printings than they are in this book. However the printing quality in the book is much better than any newspaper, as is the paper quality.Still it is wonderful to see the pages as shot from the original drawings, even if they are not the size they were drawn. However there are a few panels scattered throughout the book that probably are printed the size they were drawn. The panel on page 12 and the partial panel on the front cover are probably very close to the size they were drawn. If the large panel in the poster filled the whole poster, it would be about the size of the original drawing. The large, water colored panel on page 34 is reduced. it could have been fit on the page actual size, but to do so would have only left about 1/2 inch top and bottom margins beyond the panel borders and about 1 inch on the sides. That would have been nice to see, but is probably not practical from a production stand point. It is still nice to see as presented.If you are used to reading Prince Valiant in the hardcover Fantagraphics books or the earlier paperbacks, this book will be a real treat. But if you are used to the Manuscript Press full size reprints of 1937-1940, or reading original full size Sunday comics pages, it is still a treat to see very high quality reproductions of the original art. But the originals aren't printed any bigger than they were in the newspapers that ran Prince Valiant full page size.I am also a big fan of Carl Barks. Several years ago IDW announced that they planned an Artist edition of Carl Barks' work. This Prince Valiant book suggests that a full size Barks Artist Edition is very unlikely, even if the lack of followup from IDW hadn't already suggested the same. A full size Barks Artist edition would have to be larger than this Prince Valiant book because the image size of a Barks original comic page, is larger than this book. To do a Barks Artist Edition full size practically, the pages would have to be printed sideways, with a half page on each book page, top and bottom facing each other across the book's gutter. Maybe that is an idea worth trying. Original Barks pages, like original Foster pages, are glorious to behold. Printing Foster's work the size of the original drawings is a practical impossibility, but it would have been nice to have seen a few more panels closer to original size.

Excellent art, much that I have not seen before. Very large book so you get to really look into the black and white artwork of Hal Foster. Only problem with this is that you either have to rest book on the floor or a large table to be able to view the interior (would be way to bulky and awkward otherwise). A great book! I am glad I got it! Now if Fantagraphics will do something like this for a Walt Kelly Pogo art book.. :)

Wow. The only way this could get better is if every page was a foldout for a full-size reproduction. Not as practical as the fine book they did put together. As is it will likely be the largest book in your collection.
