This book is wonderful, and my personal favorite, beating out even the legendary 'Unix and Linux System Administration Handbook'Don't get me wrong, you really need to read both, and 'Time Management for System Administrators' while you're at it, but this book is far more about a high-level overview of how and why to build a good SA team and methodology behind offering services *in a way that is useful to the business*, rather than just what MTA to use, for example.This book covers "what do I call my servers", and so many other boring things you're going to overlook until it's far too late. It is geared more at office sysadmins than datacenter sysadmins (what I do), but in my experience, there is so much you can get from this as a datacenter sysadmin as well.In my mind, this is the sort of stuff that separates a junior sysadmin from a midlevel sysadmin - a junior sysadmin can sit down and give you a long, nuanced, and extremely passionate overview of nginx vs apache... yet they probably don't have a very good server inventory or monitoring, just some minor stuff.And then there's extremely junior SAs... you know, the rockstars. Documentation? Man, they don't write something unless it's untested code in some language that was invented last week and is trending on Reddit and is going to run at 80 million connections a second from the minute you start it up until the minute it forkbombs the server off the net. Which is only five minutes later, but they won't have the monitoring or profiling to know that. Rockstars don't *need* monitoring, and they certainly don't need an inventory or documentation.Businesses do though, and eventually they get tired of their production environment looking like a rockstar's used and abused hotel room.Reading this book is the first step to recovery.

This is the best book I have ever read. If there was a manual for life as an SA, its this.It covers nearly every aspect of the baseline you need to set in your position and the how's and why's of it. It helps you manage your time and set a level you should aspire to live up to along with how to live up to it.

Absolutely invaluable when planning a new site, working on an existing site, or explaining things to non-technical employees. This book is filled with practical, succinct and easily understandable advice for all aspects of networking. It is sufficiently vendor neutral to apply to practically any environment. It is also specific enough to be useful in the field. Justifications are readily available for all the tips and pointers given in this book, along with real world examples.Overall this is an incredible value, an excellent reference, and highly recommended. It pulls together information from countless sources and topics into one streamlined resource. If only all networks were as organized and efficient as this book.

If you've been or are planning to be in the hot seat when it comes to running a orginization's computer systems than this book is for you. I read this after being an SA for 12 years for some of the biggest names in the business (IBM, EDS, NetApp, Sprint) and it still has information that's useful to me. I'm no slouch but the fact is that most of us have learned how to do our jobs by feeling pain and working to make that pain go away. This book lets you learn from *others* pain, as well as taking a step back from the "I NEED IT NOW" we all deal with to look in a logical and comprehensive fashion at the many aspects of system administration. I cannot recommend this highly enough.I don't agree with everything the authors say (I think DDNS is a decent system for most companies for instance), but informed discusion on these topics is a must even if you (as you should) come to your own conclusions. If you're not an SA and you have not read this book chances are you're not doing as good a job as you could be. Seriously.

Even though the book presents the serious topic of pathogenic viruses in a light-hearted and casual fashion. It does a very good job of providing an introduction to the issues of viral biology. Some more details could be added since the original publication and I would think addition of mosquito-borne viruses and hemorrhagic viruses will show up in any updated edition if one gets published.

This book is the textbook for my Virology class and it makes the class much more understandable. It is so clear and concise that even students in high school AP biology could read and grasp most of this book.

I bought this book to learn more about viruses. I have a bachelors in science, but never studied virology. This book makes viruses easy to understand but would probably still be confusing if you have no previous science education.

Love this book. Simple at scientifically correct. Best way to get started in the subject.

This is well written. It was recommended by my RN microbiology teacher. It mentions how a pathogen enters the system, what feeds it, what deters it, and how it is cured.

This is such a beautifully written story, a story of love and caring and of two people who help each other out, when both need it and never thinking at the beginning that this journey will turn to a beautiful joyous and romantic HEA, I hope that you enjoy this one as much as I did.Dr Penelope (Nell) Maitland has left her job at a big hospital in England to get away from a and unpleasant boss and situation, and she has travelled to a small country to become physician to Prince Hugo DeLeon, who is a doctor himself his father has hired her to make sure that he does what is needed to get well and of course we all know that Doctors make the worst patients, but Nell is more than capable of pulling him into line.Hugo is not impressed at all that he now has a live in Doctor keeping tabs on him although she is beautiful and knows what she is doing, he feels that she is keeping something to herself and when there is a newspaper report he discovers what it is and they have two ways to cope one, he can come clean with his health issues or they have a fake engagement.This is a story that brings out the best in the hero and heroine, both are strong and caring and as they learn more about each other as they “pretend” to be engaged they also get closer, but Hugo has been through one engagement that went wrong because of him and he never wants that to happen again and it takes a bit for him to learn that being without Nell is no way to go forward. I truly loved this story the caring and attentive Hugo and Nell do make the perfect couple, and this one left me feeling very happy for them both, thank you MS Claydon for another fabulous story one that I highly recommend.

As a doctor he should have known the signs. Not to mention he is Prince of Montarino. He cant be seen as too weak to do his job. The king hires Dr Nell Maitland to make sure his son takes it easy. Hugo isn't the easiest patient either. When Nell's ex boss sells a story about her to the papers. They decide to fake an engagement, it will kill two birds with one stone. No one will question Nell always being by his side. Plus they can stop any stories in the press. I loved the friendship between them, which slowly developed into love.Annie Claydon is a new to me author, one I will be on the look out for more books.Highly recommended for fans of contemporary romance.

The friendship that developed between them was fun to watch and once they began to have romantic interest, it picked up a little bit. Overall, an enjoyable read!Dr. Hugo DeLeon knows they say doctors make the worst patients, but he's hoping to get out of being a patient at all because he doesn't need to be watched by this doctor his father, the King, is insisting on hiring.Dr. Penelope Maitland is happy for the time away from London where she just got out from under a precarious work experience with an unpleasant boss. She quickly starts to appreciate the position Hugo is in and agrees to help him ease back into work, but when her past comes back to rear it's ugly head, they find themselves pretending to be engaged to stop the media storm that's about to hit!

From Doc to Princess by Annie ClaydonDoctors make the worse patients. Dr Hugo DeLeon is not only a doctor but a prince as well. His father hires Dr Penelope Maitland to watch over Hugo after he has heart surgery and manage his hectic schedule so he can recover. She is between jobs due to a very unpleasant experience with her last boss. This puts Hugo and Penelope in a interesting position as Hugo does not want the details of his health condition to be made public. There is only one way they can do this.A good read.

Dr. Hugo DeLeon is also a prince, who has a special link to heart disease and a little pediatric heart patient called Nadine . So being so involved trying to get a clinic built the last thing he thought would be that he himself would be a patient with a heart problem. Enter Dr. Nell Maitland hired by the King to take care of his son Hugo who just had a pace maker installed. Hugo does not want anyone to know of his condition so Nell constantly stays next to his left side to keep his arm and shoulder protected till the incision heels and he is declared healthy. Just protecting his left side becomes a little more to both of them as feeling start to grow, then to keep it a secret they pretend an engagement. Pretend is tough for both as they start to fall in love. A truly lovely romance with enough medical to make it informative. You will love little Nadine and again this author writes a story with an HEA you wanted from the minute they met.

It details the cooperation of the U.S Justice Department, the IRS, and the FBI that was needed to get to the bottom and top of this gross injustice which has beeen on going for many years. An excelllent read.

A captivating story of how FIFA turned from a humble sports governing body to an international crime syndicate, it goes deep into the motivations of the criminals and the cops. The characters come from all over the world and their stories are well worth reading. After reading this, it'll be tough for me to watch the beautiful game without thinking about all the sleaze behind it.

I think this was a great start to a series. I read a LOT of sci fi so it is hard for me to find something that feels new. There were of course familiar things such as disgruntled young people in so called "perfect" societies but I love a heroine that faces her fears and goes after what she wants. The whole tortured love thing had a new twist because she doesn't even understand her feelings and nobody has explained sex yet. With a society that represses feeling, hormones, uses invitro for pregnancy it isn't hard to believe she is totally unprepared to go out on her own but luckily she meets friends and discovers there is more to the world and herself than she knew.

When I read the first book in a trilogy, I look for three things: a protagonist that I care about; a satisfying story with at least some closure; and a reason to want to read the rest of the trilogy. Author Carissa Andrews delivers on all three.We learn enough about our protagonist, Runa, to care about what happens to her. The story follows her rebellion against her proscribed life and her trek to follow her destiny which she slowly learns as the story progresses. As her humanity is reawakened, Runa delves into human emotions including love. Her destiny, though, forces her to establish alliances (and make friends ) and make choices that are for a greater good.The story dives into the essence of what makes us human and how being human can lead to bad decisions.Any good story needs an antagonist and Vedius fills the role nicely. He is clearly the villain, but we only learn a bit about why he’s a villain and why he fights Runa. This brewing war is the draw to the rest of the trilogy. Of course, the fate of Runa and her friends also intrigues me.

One of the best otherworldly series I've read in a long time. Loved Loved Loved the character creation and world building in Carissa's novels. I have read all three and devoured them. I love the way she starts out with you not really knowing where the heroine Runa is, to going back in time to recount the events and then you are way into the future. The planet and its inhabitants are quite different and there interactions with Runa are not clear at first and slowly unfolds. You are in for a ride.

Very good book in the sci-fi genre. The main character is Runa who lives in the Helix. Their planet is tidaly-locked so one half is burning desert, one half arctic, and down the middle is a huge enclosed habitat called the Helix. The story line is super, and the writing is excellent. I will certainly be reading books two and three. I gave the book four stars for all the typos, words left out, and words added. The author should have a better proofreader. Don't let that keep you from reading this great book. I'm just a little OCD when it comes to a final, published book.

I may be a but biased in my review, for I have known the author for year's now. We spoke about Pemdomus in an impromptu gathering on an author's group but even then I could tell Pendomus would be bigger then the groups collective works because the author has such a strong sense of who she is and where she wants to be, I feel like that strength comes through very honestly in the writing.I don't want to spoil any of the joys you'll get from your own reading and truth be told, not everyone will enjoy this book. But like life on Pendomus, and like Runa the best things to happen in life are not always by a continuation of the events you like but by stepping forth into the parts that can make you uneasy, even downright unpleasant but as long as you can keep your self centered, find that way to keep moving further, even a single step at a time then you will grow. I'm rambling on!Do yourself a favor if you love science fiction, with a twist of fantasy and a little romance to boot! Than you'll like, maybe even fall in love eight book one of the Pendomus Cycle!!

I found this quite interesting and intriguing. It did take me a little bit to get into, but I can't wait to read book 2 now. Runa has quite a heavy burden for one young girl, that grew up without parental love. She grew up in what's called the helix, the place where you don't really have choices. She is not living in the helix anymore, but luckily has found some other young people that help her and they become friends. Runa right now needs to save her brother, then the world. I look forward to finding out how Runa will accomplish her tasks, and go on what I'm sure will be a roller coaster ride. So I'm going to buckle up and start book 2.

This is a fantastic read Runa ends up in a different part of this place. She is found by a group of people that at first there not sure they trust. Do they learn to trust her. She must find the key to survival of literary everything. This is right up there with the hunger games. There is also adventure. And twists and turns. This series would make a fanastic Movie. A definite must read. For fantasy readers and sci fi readers. Theres even a bit of romance. I loved loved loved it.Shauna Joesten

No need for sleep in the Helix. No need to speak when your minds are linked by the eLink. Why would you want venture into ugly, dangerous world outside? But Runa is different, in many ways and so is the storyline of Pendomus. I totally enjoyed the way the author keeps surprising you with new revelations as you join Runa on her journey. You might as well buy all 3 at once. You won't want stop at the end of book one

I bought this because I make maps as part of my job. I'd like to learn how to make better ones and this book had some helpful tips, especially when it comes to making maps for people who are color blind. Something that never occurred to me. Many of the examples are nice, text placement, text size, fonts, colors, etc. Overall, it's a nice addition to my library and I consult it on occasion when I need to.

I love this book. I have been a GIS user for 10 years and really only came upon this book last year. It really helped me to improve my maps through thorough explanation of methods of map development and great examples. It didn't take me long to get through the book, but the information was valuable: clear and concise. It gave me changes I could implement the very next day at work- and I did. I wish I had found this book 10 years ago.

Got a nice new version and am really enjoying it. Got it for class, but it is a book I might use in my career as well.

This GIS cartography book comes with lots of pictures and the font is easy to read. No issues regarding shipping from the seller.

This book will be mostly pretty basic for anyone who is trained as a designer since it relies on standard design methodologies to display map information (as it should!). I thought that this book was very well illustrated and well written and I enjoyed having it on-hand for a work project.

However, reading the rebuttal that McGinniss has appended to the newest edition of "Fatal Vision" the argument could be made that Janet Malcolm also played fast and loose with her reporting of the MacDonald v. McGuiniss lawsuit. Given her scant attention to the facts of the MacDonald murder case, you could get the impression from this book that MacDonald is innocent of the murder of his wife and daughters when in fact the evidence is overwhelmingly against MacDonald. A good read, but you need to read McGinniss' rebuttal to make a fair assessment.

In being nearly twenty years old, Malcolm’s book suffers a bit of dating and a somewhat heavy faith in psychoanalysis, but her ideas about the role of a reporter in dealing with the subject of a news story and how journalism has to break from the narrative that subject wants while actually yay-saying that narrative in order to keep the subject engaged are important ones, especially these days of a media besieged by propagandists who are either too sensitive to understand that proper news outlets have a deeper responsibility or their lackeys who deliberately cloud what that exact responsibility is. But is it okay to lie, and to repeatedly lie outright to get a story as did Joe McGinniss. while he interviewed the military doctor accused of killing his wife?In this case, the lies went beyond politeness, beyond simply allowing the source to think that the journalist was on his side, without saying as much.And thus it was that McGinniss ended paying a large settlement to Jeffrey MacDonald, the convicted killer.This story is not the be all and end all of journalists reporting on the press. But in its time, it was an excellent look at the lengths to which some go to get the story.And since then, the lines have simply blurred and journalists become far more sloppy.But that's a story for another book, another day.

This was a very thoughtful read on what constitutes ethical journalism, and the book raises poignant questions about whether a reporter can truly every capture the "truth" of a person. At the outset, the main subject of the book declines to make himself available to the author. While somewhat disappointed initially, Malcolm seems to take relief in the fact that her personal dealings with the man can not complicate her writing about him. I bought this argument initially (and maybe I still do, in many ways) but I do have to say that I think hearing more of his perspective was necessary to make this 4 star read an absolute 5. Ultimately, writing a book about a man's lack of ethics without allowing him to contextualize his side with the benefit of hindsight seems nearly as unfair as what McGinnis did to MacDonald. Her book certainly isn't unethical, but it feels incomplete. Still, an excellent and thought provoking read

Amazing book. The author explores the behaviour of a journalist who ingratiated himself into the life of a man (a doctor) on trial (and convicted) for murdering his wife. The journalist misrepresented himself to the doctor as being a supporter of his innocence; but actually fossicked and exploited what he learned to write a book completely crucifying the doctor. Malcolm’s book looks at the ethics of what the journalist did. This book is incredibly compelling and fascinating. Highly recommend!

I found this to book by Janet Malcolm to be a fascinating read, especially for anyone interested in journalism and the relationship between journalist and subject. Using the murder case of Jeffrey MacDonald as a backdrop, Malcolm looks at the unethical deal Joe McGinniss made for exclusive access to MacDonald to write his book. The initial murder case is overshadowed by a case of fraud and Malcolm suggests that McGinniss is guilty of misleading MacDonald. How do we make sure journalists remain ethical in their reporting. Does Malcolm give us all the facts? Is she herself participating in the very thing she accuses McGinniss of? This book left me with many questions.

The book was a waste of my time. I kept reading and hoping that the book would finally start to grab my attention. I used it as an easy way to put me to sleep. Trust me, it will !

Especially good for folks interested in nonfiction writing.
