But how do we get them? Newberg and Waldman propose a thoughtful, well-documented, biological hypothesis...[that is] fascinating for believers and nonbelievers alike." -- Dean Hamer, PhD, geneticist and author of Living with Our Genes and The God Gene

Wonderful information. Andrew Newberg, MD and Mark Waldman have done many years of in depth research discovering the neural processes and growth the brain goes through with beliefs and meditation. I highly recommend all of their books for healing information and brain health, and memory health. They make the information about the brain easy, acceptable and very user friendly.

Again, fast delivery, love the book. Anything written by Dr. Newberg is worth the read.

I love spiritual books that give you perspective. I love even more books that show you the science behind it. This is a fascinating read.

A scientific primer for skeptics.

This is a well-written neuropsychological study. Dr. Newberg is both a neurosurgeon and a scientifiic researcher. The information is well documented. His philosphical contributions are approbiate and stimulating.

This author never finishes her reverse harem series. I have lost count of how many she has, it has to be more than 10. She writes a couple of books and then starts another series without finishing any of the others. It's extremely frustrating. Don't bother reading anything if you want to actually read a complete series and don't want to be left hanging constantly.

I hesitate to read anything from this author anymore because she typically starts a series and doesn't finish it, and she does not respond on Facebook if you ask anything about her books. At least that's been my experience. But, I will say, she is an extremely talented writer. I've enjoyed anything I've read by her, so that's why it's so frustrating when you get hooked into a series from her and then it just drops off the face of the planet. This particular book drew me in. As most of her work does. I liked the characters and the direction this series seems to be going, so I truly hope she stays with it and completes it. I'm anxiously looking forward to book 2. I gave a 4 star rating only because it's a gamble with this author and her actually finishing up a series.

This is my first book to read by Jessica Sorensen. This is going to be one of my favorites, looking forward to reading the next book. Strong female character and a lot of mystery. The three Raven guys seem to not had it easy either. Read the book I promise you won't be disappointed. I hope the guys take care of her uncle he is so mean to her. Great book!

There’s so much trauma in these characters lives that my heart hurts for all of them! I really enjoyed reading this book and can’t wait to read the second book, luckily I only have about 11 days to wait! Still seems like forever though!

This chick will leave you hanging for sure.... still waiting for the next Cursed Hadley, Jessica! I’ll be honest, I didn’t read this one even though I’m intrigued. I’ll hold off to see if she can get full series out before I commit to anything else she writes. Just wanted to warn those who aren’t familiar with her writing because it is super frustrating! Also, her books are way too short! She has good ideas and I like her wit but it’s like she’s rushing them out and spreading herself too thin. Girl has ADHD! I mean take some Ritalin and focus, lady!

Wow this book is fantastic could not put it down. Poor Raven a few of her secrets i think everyone can relate too. Cant wait for book 2

I like the books the author writes in general so its no surprise that I liked this one. The romance is going to be slow I think. I hate that she has a billion series that she doesn't finish and wastes time rewriting. Wish this book had been longer.

I've been avoiding this author because she tends to start a series and never finish it but the book was too alluring. I'm glad a took a chance because wow, this book sucked me right in and I had to read it from beginning to end as soon as I started. The Raven Four is a bully type story where the MC is getting bullied by guys but eventually gets drawn into their group. Sadly this book ended right when it was starting to get good but the great news is the next installment should come out later this month. I recommend you take the plunge and start this series.

Review

A New York Times Book Review Editors' ChoiceOne of the Top 10 Health and Medicine Books of 2016, Booklist"Dr. Kramer, who has written so well about the curse of melancholia . . . has done something very valuable: He has waded into the contentious debate about the efficacy of antidepressants . . . [Kramer] has done some much-needed synthesizing and debunking . . . his dissections of the most incendiary studies are careful, and his conclusions―that they overestimate placebo effects and underestimate the potency of antidepressants―will invite a reckoning of some kind . . . his 'interludes' describing his own experience treating patients . . . are beautiful, philosophical, ambivalent." ―Jennifer Senior, The New York Times "Ordinarily Well is an ambitious, persuasive, and important book . . . [Kramer] doesn’t just make a case for antidepressants. He makes a case for psychiatry itself as a humanistic science . . . Kramer is an excellent guide as he subjects evidence-based purism . . . to the scrutiny he believes it needs . . . Kramer also works in a courteous fashion, respectful of his opponents and his readers, in whose patience and capacity for reason he places great faith." ―Jonathan Rosen, The Atlantic "Careful and measured and fair . . . Kramer evinces such humility that no one could accuse him of being a promedication ideologue . . . Kramer is out to win the 'antidepressant wars' in favor of the antidepressants. Is he right? . . . in my judgment he is . . . You will most likely come away convinced by his argument for the efficacy of antidepressants―and moved by his humane concern for his patients, and for the needless suffering of unmedicated patients around the world." ―Scott Stossel, The New York Times Book Review"Offers a carefully argued and convincing case that antidepressants not only work but also are an essential tool in the treatment of depression . . . Anybody who wants to hear what Prozac has to say will be interested in this book." ―Ann Levin, The Associated Press"Kramer reaches into his own practice and into the scientific literature―amply documented here―to show that the charge of ineffectiveness is false. Antidepressants, he says, have given many patients back their lives, and some of these anecdotes are quite moving . . . [Kramer] comes across as modest and self-deprecatory, and giants such as Gerald Klerman, the onetime dean of American psychiatry, spring to life in these pages." ―Edward Shorter, The Washington Post"[Ordinarily Well] seeks to restore public confidence in antidepressants through a combination of reporting, research analysis and [Kramer's] own experience with patients . . . it is certainly an important [read] for those who seek help for depression and the providers who treat them." ―Damon Tweedy, Chicago Tribune "Peter D. Kramer provides a forceful rejoinder to this growing tide of skepticism [toward antidepressants]. Kramer has been a prominent voice on matters of mental health for some time . . . His new book takes a unique approach: though at times passionate and personal, it is mostly a detailed excavation of the thorny landscape of the empirical evidence for antidepressant medications." ―Adam Gaffney, The New Republic "[Ordinarily Well] sheds new light on this controversial matter . . . After more than 20 years [since Listening To Prozac], Kramer wants to address properly what he thinks is a potentially dangerous level of ignorance and confusion about antidepressants . . . I enjoyed reading this book and I totally agree with the author when he argues that both clinical experience with real patients and randomised evidence from studies point in the same direction in a complementary way." ―Andrea Cipriani, The Lancet"For its articulate, heartfelt demonstration of all those problems [surrounding antidepressants], the book is invaluable." ―Abigail Zuger, M.D., The New York Times "Kramer is a fine writer with a gift for the evocative turn of phrase. His patients come alive on the page, and his account of the changes in psychiatry over the last forty years rings true . . . I recommend Ordinarily Well to everyone who prescribes antidepressants, and to psychotherapists, other health professionals, patients, and members of the public who may have doubts about their effectiveness." ―Burns Woodward, Psychiatric Times "An engaging book about a complex topic, arguing throughout that antidepressants work well and have been given a bum rap . . . Despite the complexity of the topic and the breadth of his research reviews, Dr. Kramer tells the story of antidepressant research in a way that a lay reader can follow . . . The complexities are explained without medical lingo and, in the end, he concludes what psychiatrists see every day: Antidepressants work." ―Dinah Miller, Clinical Psychiatry News"Kramer mounts a comprehensive, spirited, and completely convincing defense [of antidepressants], dispelling any doubts about their efficacy and life-changing capability . . . Kramer is at his best when he reflects on the privilege of being a psychiatrist, the value of a doctor’s steady judgement, and the vulnerability of physician and patient alike. He is unwavering: 'Placebos don’t prevent depression, and antidepressants do.' Case closed." ―Tony Miksanek, Booklist (starred review)"I have always loved Peter Kramer's writing for the reflective way he weds his own practice and personal experiences with extant science to lead us to new and profound insights into the psyche. Listening to Prozac exemplified his ability to define a new paradigm. In Ordinarily Well, he brings a lifetime of treating patients to a consideration of antidepressants, looking carefully at the nature of evidence. The work of one of the few voices out there without ties to industry, this reasoned and beautifully written narrative is another breakthrough, one that brings us to a new and humane understanding of depression and its treatment." ―Abraham Verghese, author of Cutting For Stone"In previous books, Peter Kramer has been an insightful clinician, a sensitive novelist, and a social critic. Here he is a thoughtful teacher. Using both the scientific literature and the lived experience of his own patients, he explains brilliantly the evidence supporting the use of antidepressants. As he notes, depression is a serious, life-threatening illness. Antidepressants work, keeping depression at bay. For some they are not sufficient. And for an unfortunate few, they are not effective. But remembering the hopeless state of treatment only a few decades ago, Kramer reminds us with compelling prose and compassionate insight that today millions of us are much better off with access to these medications." ―Thomas R. Insel, M.D, former director, National Institute of Mental Health"Written with the compassion, verve, and style that are the author's trademark, this book offers an invaluable overview on the state of treatment and the options available." ―Kirkus Reviews"Kramer makes an energetic and personal case for the role of antidepressants in easing crippling depression." ―Publishers Weekly"Kramer has done it again. First, he showed the world the potentially transformative efficacy of antidepressants in Listening to Prozac. Now, in Ordinarily Well, Kramer dissects the controversy and misinformation about the effectiveness of antidepressants with impressive clarity and fairness. Kramer is a masterful teacher and clinician who gives readers a rare gift: an insider's understanding of this complex subject, including statistics and the design of clinical trials. Anyone who wants to know the truth about antidepressants should read this book." ―Richard A. Friedman, M.D., Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College and contributing Op-Ed writer for The New York Times"In this provocative and personal book, Kramer begins with the premise that he speaks in the voice of 'clinician as sinner.' For Kramer, the clinician's sin is to complicate the simpler story told by the randomized trials, the clerical voice in drug research. He makes the case that the studies need the narrative and the narratives need the studies. We have taken sides in a culture war in psychiatry that we can’t afford. Patients' well-being, indeed their very lives, depend on a declaration of peace. Ordinarily Well makes a compelling case for humility. Sometimes medications work but imperfectly or they work for a while but need to be changed. And sometimes they work when supplemented by the insight that only conversation can provide." ―Sherry Turkle, Professor of the Social Studies of Science, MIT, and author of Reclaiming Conversation: The Power of Talk in a Digital Age and Alone Together: Why We Expect More From Technology and Less from Each Other"For anyone with depression or anyone who loves someone struggling with it, this book is essential. It's cutting edge psychiatry at its best―all the important questions, data, and controversy surrounding antidepressant treatment made crystal clear. Dr. Kramer is one of the rare experts who is, at once, analytically astute, vastly knowledgeable, clinically experienced, and personally very wise." ―Sally Satel, M.D., Yale University, and coauthor of Brainwashed: The Seductive Appeal of Mindless Neuroscience"Biological psychiatry has shown that depression―poetically called 'malignant sadness'―is as biologically 'real' as cancer (or any other disease). This is most apparent when a drug changes the patient's neurochemistry and, with greater than chance frequency, the darkness lifts. Nonetheless, the value of antidepressants has been questioned in both scientific and pseudo-scientific circles. In Ordinarily Well, Peter Kramer, arguably the wisest clinician thinking and writing about depression, emphatically supports the efficacy of using antidepressants in the right place and time. Given the pandemic of malignant sadness that we face, this is a deeply important book." ―Robert Sapolsky, professor of biological sciences and of neurological sciences and neurology at Stanford University"Ordinarily Well is vintage Peter D. Kramer: compassionate, thoughtful, provocative. This book makes a case for the clinical wisdom that anti-depressants can work and can save lives―and that for individual patients, they can be even more effective than the research suggests." ―Tanya Marie Luhrmann, Watkins University Professor in the Anthropology Department at Stanford University, and author of When God Talks Back

Regardless of whether you're interested in the treatment of depression, this book is an eye-opener regarding drug testing. That's mostly what the book is about. Peter Kramer is generally pro-medication, though he believes that talk therapy can be helpful too, and that there's no one-size-fits-all treatment for depression. Also, he comes down on the side the doctor's individual judgment and observation, based on careful assessment of the patient's needs, rather than simply "evidence based medicine." For those unfamiliar with the term, that means making medical decisions solely based on gross empirical data (as I understand it). However, the heart of the book is a defense of medication, based on Kramer's analysis of various "trials" or tests of anti-depressants, placebos and other treatment options. Thus, the book is somewhat technical and requires careful reading and thought (by the layman, as I am). However, Kramer persuaded me that much anti-depressant drug testing is very poor, with badly structured and/or interpreted trials. The scary thought is that the drug companies, testing labs, academic researchers and so get away with these shenanigans.Unsurprisingly, the author believes that tests run by academic institutions are likely to be the best designed and most objective. On the other hand, as reported in the New York Times of June 28, 2016, "New York University's medical school has quietly shut down eight studies at its prominent psychiatric research center and parted ways with a top researcher after discovering a series of violations in a study of an experimental, mind-altering drug." Among the violations: "records had been falsified." Although good for NYU in ending the "studies," bad for NYU in trying to keep the problem quiet (assuming the author of the NYT article, Benedict Carey, is correct in that characterization). Also bad for NYU's institutional control of it's "prominent psychiatric research center" and for Peter Kramer's deference to academic institutions.I recommend the book, not just for those interested in the treatment of depression, but for anyone with a scientific bent who wants to know what can go on in the drug testing world (clearly, not all bad, but enough to be scary).

Excelent as source of information for both non-pychiatrist physicians and general public. An eye-opener for those that believe double blinded randomized trials are the ultimate in evaluating treatmen's and medicies. Not in the mental halth field. The language is unnececessarily complex, at times circumvulalated

excellent update of "better than well" data in "Listening to Prozac"

Very well written. There will always be controversy about meds for anxiety and depression. It is important to keep an open mind.

Excellent history of anti-depressants and the problems with clinical studies testing the efficacy of antidepressant. Very readable.

The books reads like a 250 page journal article. Although there are interesting parts, especially the section on how drug company trials are actually conducted, in general, the author's central points could have been made in a 10 page article.

I found this work to be uplifting and not above the level of a concerned layman. If you are involved in a lifelong relationship with one who is victim of a depression malady this book will elucidate the problems that are faced and the progress being made.Having read this immediately after finishing _The Gene_ has encouraged me to be positive and thankful that we have so many great minds working on these eternal challenges. Both will be classics.

It was a little boring......

Really enjoyed this book, I think it's my favorite Lauren K Denton read so far! She has great character development with the right combo of love, loss, growth and change. The story follows three generations of women–a mom, her teenage daughter, and her mother. She tells the story from each women's point of view, which I love. Her descriptions had me picturing the exact location of Jessie's shop, Sumner's home on the water and the entirety of Glory Road. I connected easily to the story and loved every page. This would be the PERFECT spring break or summer read, you won't be disappointed....except maybe when you've finished and have to move on to read something else!! ;)

Thank you to Thomas Nelson and NetGalley for the advanced copy of Glory Road by Lauren K. Denton.I have read both The Hideaway and Hurricane Season by Lauren K. Denton and she's quickly become one of my favorite authors when it comes to women's southern fiction. I absolutely adored both previous books and had a hunch Glory Road would become a favorite of mine as well. This book felt a little different from The Hideaway and Hurricane Season, but in very good ways.Glory Road follows Jessie, Evan (Jessie's fourteen year old daughter), and Gus (Jessie's mother). Jessie and Evan had moved back to her hometown of Perry, Alabama, several years ago after her marriage crumbled.Jessie opened her gardening shop, Twig, and finally feels like herself after years of struggling to be someone she was not. She's closed off her heart to love after her divorce, but this summer might prove to be one that will open her heart back up. A close high school friend, Ben, reenters her life and then she meets Sumner when he casually walks into her gardening shop one day.Evan is entering into the summer before her freshman year in high school begins and helps in her Mom's shop frequently. She is determined to hold onto her unique personality and not to be changed by the world around her. This summer opens up a world of possibility for Evan, and she's determined to make the most of it.Gus is a stubborn, witty homemaker, always cooking up something in the kitchen. She's a widow, living next door to her daughter and granddaughter. She is not afraid to share her opinion and is always trying to steer Jessie towards love again. This book is sweet, full of summertime nostalgia and glimpses of the south. I enjoyed the way the book was narrated - it was so well-written and magical. I loved seeing both the similarities and differences in three generations of women throughout the story. The characters were so raw and intentional - Jessie's struggle as she worked through her emotions from her past and the love that she could experience now, Evan's discovery of who she is and how she always turns back to family. I really connected with her and saw pieces of my fourteen-year-old self in her. And then there's Gus. Oh, Gus. She had to be my favorite character. Her stubbornness and humor had me laughing out loud! She is determined and reminded me so much of my own grandmother.Glory Road was such a beautiful story. The descriptions were spot on and had me visualizing everything from that red dirt road, to the rain drops falling during Jessie's evening runs. The small details were incredible as well - before each chapter began, there were quotes from gardening books. This was such a lovely addition and some quotes were so fascinating! I learned a lot about gardening from this book and it made me want to start planting one.Sumner's and Ben's interactions with Jessie were believable and well-written - the struggle in Jessie's emotions and how her backstory is revealed throughout the story and not simply spelled out in the beginning was such a great writing choice. The way Lauren draws out her characters in such a personal way makes all of them seem so real. Gus had me laughing, Evan had me reminiscing, and Jessie had me feeling: peace, sadness, heartbreak, fear, love. This is such a heartfelt read and definitely worth it to pick up!!

Lauren’s books are the kind you want to finish in one sitting. Her first book, The Hideaway, was my favorite book last year and I quickly picked up her second book, The Hurricane, and devoured that one too. This book was the perfect mix of family and romance. Her stories and characters stick with you long after you finish the book. She’s quickly become one of my very favorite authors and I can’t wait to read her future books!

I gave Glory Road 5 stars because it's a beautiful story about family, love, new beginnings and sad endings sometimes. That's the way life goes. I love the setting, the characters and the plot. I highly recommend Lauren K. Denton as a fine writer any girl or woman would enjoy reading.

I always enjoy books by southern authors since I grew up in the South. Lauren Fenton wrote of three women in a family. I loved that each of the women had a voice which made for a richer story line. It was a wonderfully written book. Loved it!

Laughed and cried,, learned things about plants and flowers and also about myself. No one has reached my soul like Laura since Fannie Flagg.

Couldnt wait until her next book came out!! I read Glory Road in about 8 hours, loved it! Now Ill anxiously await the next one.

Mom really enjoyed this book. This was the first Lauren Denton book mom has read. I get all these romance and christian novels for her. She loves to read and this book was no exception. I know when she loves a book because she will read it in a day or two. This book was read in a day and half. In addition, I am on the hunt for more Lauren Denton novels.I never tell about the book itself as I DO NOT want to spoil anything for another reader. Mom may give me a synopsis about the book but I never talk about the story line. Hate it when someone tells me something about the story that occurs 3/4 the way thru a book or a reviewer tells me they do finally get married. I don’t want you spoiling my reading and I do not want to spoil your reading when it comes to a good book. I figure it you are wanting to know a little about the story, you can read the synopsis that Amazon and the author gives you.I figure you need to know if someone enjoyed reading the book or if it was poorly done. This one was an enjoyable read. She will telling the other ladies in the Beauty Shop Book Group about Lauren Denton.

I had read others reviews and I am not one to shy away from traditional versions of fairy tales. In fact, I prefer them. But, the addition of the gun and the description of "slashing" was a bit too much for me to read to my preschool class. I did see it is suggested for 5 and up. I would probably say 7 or 8. The illustrations were beautiful, but it was not very well written for keep a child's interest regardless of age. I will have to keep l looking for a good one.

A bautiful book. note, its a longer tale and more appropriate for 5 and older. Beautiful pictures and sticks true to the original storyline. If you don't mind the sight of a hunter with a gun then you will be ok with this book.

The art work is better than most. There is several non-traditional elements to this version. IE the woodsman calls the wolf "sinner"Before he dispatches him and cuts out granny and Lil' hood... The inclusion of the word evokes a moral tone and seems like a non-sequitur. IT IS a morality tale but the wolfs morality should be static, and needs to be static, to dialogue about Little red's trail obedience. Weither he "sins" (missing the mark in archery) or not he is a WOLF who eats red meat, it's his nature. SEE the title 'little red riding hood and the sweet little wolf'

I'm a nanny. I got this for my kids for Halloween. I remember reading an edition almost exactly like this one when I was little! Its the perfect amount of "scary" for my kids, but might not be a great fit for all young children, depending on their sensitivity. This is the traditional tale of the wolf eating the grandmother and the girl and the huntsman cutting them out of his belly, complete with pictures. It was fine for us, but I know some families for whom this would have been "too much too soon."

Parents vary on the version of Red Riding Hood they want to share with their kids. So, let me say up front, I wanted the one where the grandma gets eaten (not hides in the closet); where Red Riding Hood gets eaten (not rescued at the very last minute) and where the wolf gets killed (not runs away). If this is NOT for you, pick another version. Personally, I get mad when grandma hides in the closet (what....and doesn't jump out to intervene between her granddaughter and a ravenous wolf? She's either deaf or heartless......) I think Red Riding Hood needs to get eaten (natural consequences are great learning lessons.) And unless the wolf is killed and hauled off by the woodsman to be hung on his door, how do you know for SURE that he'll never, ever, ever return? My daughter is 3 and this is one of her very favorite bedtime stories. The illustrations by Trina Schart Hyman are lovely, with little homages to her Mimi hid within.

Beautifully illustrated classic story book! My 2.5 year old daughter loves it. I like throwing extra commentary of what can happen to a young girl if she does not obey mommy's directions! LOL

I read through the reviews and product details and was led to believe that this would be the book and disc. We only received the disc. I can't figure out where to get the book now. We love the story and wish we had the book as well. I would love to rate this item higher, but the misleading information prevents me from doing so. If you plan on purchasing the book and read along disc. This item is not that.

Don't talk to strangers unless you want very bad things to happen. This is the fairytale as it was told to me as a child. The author/illustrator tells it like it is and doesn't sugar coat it. When i was in elementary school i fell in love with her illustrations in Snow White, so much so that i checked the book out of the library often. One day it was checked out by someone who never brought it back. I found & bought that book decades later and relived my fascination with the beautiful, dark pictures which mirrored the rendition of the fairytale. I am thrilled to find other tales illustrated by Trina Schart Hyman and happy to add this one to my collection.
