What an absolutely perfect craft Frank Cooper has come up with in these miniature needlepoint Persian, Caucasian, and Turkish carpets! They are simple, beautiful, unusual, and portable. The miniatures are typically between 6-9 inches in width and 10-16 inches in length, and though they are quite detailed, the stitches are not impossibly tiny. Cooper uses a #18 canvas (18 stitches per 2.5 cm), which allows these little jewels to work up surprisingly quickly. The instructions are plainly written; the charts are the book's only real drawback, as they must really be enlarged on a copier to be usable by the average needleworker. But the patterns are authentic, taken from rugs Cooper has studied closely in his travels, and the color photographs and the historical background he adds to each rug's description are alone worth the price of the book.

I have a passion for Persian carpets yet I never imagined I could find a way to capture a bit of this art by making something myself. The designs in the books are lush and inspiring- each one a jewel box of oriental carpet design. The directions look fairly easy to follow though I have to confess I don't know how to needlepoint....Yet! Readers of this book may also want to check out the second needlepoint book I purchased with this one: "Tribal Design s for Needlepoint" by Gay Ann Rogers.

This is an incredible labor of love on the part of the author and it is gracious of him to share his work for our enrichment and enjoyment. The intricate designs of the rugs the author has chosen to reproduce are painstakingly charted and he has made careful notes of any small changes in color or a minor change in a detail. The charts are easy to follow, needless to say. (I'm using them for something other than needlepoint.) Also, the descriptions of the rugs the designs were taken from, the meaning of some of the design elements, the regions they were made, and stylistic differences between regions were really well written and interesting, so it was like a crash course in oriental rugs as well. Fascinating.

If you love oriental carpets and do any knitting, weaving ,or needlepoint this is a great source book. Mr Campbell charts out each carpet so you can design on any scale from minii to full size carpet. Beautiful and important work

I once had this book and somehow lost it. I made a few designs in then and found them difficult enough to hold my interest. I want to make some mousepads for christmas gifts from the patterns and I remembered that they are easily altered because of the repeated motifs. I was delighted to find it in great condition and signed by the author/artist.

I couldn't resist this book! I love oriental carpets, but of course they're expensive and require a lot of space. This way I can have the designs I love, in miniature. The rugs he chose are lovely, and the designs easy to follow, plus he provides the color numbers for the yarn if you want to use his colors. (This is particularly nice if you live overseas like I do and need to order the yarn.) I would have liked some hints on how to come up with designs for other rugs, but it's easy to figure out by looking at his designs. The book is obviously for a niche market, but if you like oriental carpets and needlepoint, I doubt there's anything out there quite like this.

What a fantastic book. It is exactly what I require. All of the patterns are copies of the genuine article. I am having trouble deciding on which one to make.

The charts could be easier. The black squares made it dificult to read but great designs

Can't wait for snow to fly and me schedule settles down so I came start this winter's project. Easy to read and follow.

This is an excellent push-pull book between 2 people whose families hate each other. Jenn refers to them as a modern day Romeo and Juliet. One could argue their families were like the Hatfields and McCoys too. James and Julia were entertaining as leads in the book. I was more pro-James than pro-Julia at times. Good storyline. Dual point of view. No cliffhanger.

If you are looking for the perfect enemies to lovers story look no further because Jenn Sterling has hit it out of the park.Julia LaBella & James Russo were raised to hate each other but what there parents never expected was the attraction they had and the connection they had from the time they were young. It definitely was a push & pull but over the years keeping what they were feeling was getting harder to keep from one another.The relationship was one that they never thought would happen but with will and determination James knew he needed to get his girl and nothing was going to stop him feud and all. I just loved watching not only these two finally admit their feelings for another but watching their families realize that all the time that was wasted by a feud that had nothing to do with them. If you are looking for a book that will leave you with a smile on your face when you see the words The End then this is the one for you.

Bitter Rival is a humorous twist on the enemies to lovers trope, and I couldn't put it down! Julia and James were raised to hate one another since they were children. Living next door to one another, and being the heirs to their respective wineries they're always near one another, but an old family rivalry forces them to "hate" one another. The problem is, both of them are attracted to one another, one of them refuses to admit it and the other is sick of fighting it. I truly enjoyed this new twist on Romeo and Juliet that J. Sterling gave us. Julia and James are perfect for one another, but there's so much standing in their way. I loved how James refused to give up on Julia, and well.. he's just the perfect guy, if we're going to be honest. He knows what he wants, and he refuses to back down. Julia on the other hand, she knows what she wants, but she has so much to lose, and it breaks my heart what she's forced to give up. When all the truths come out, and how everything plays out in this book, it was amazing. This book isn't your typical enemies to lovers romance. It's not super hateful, and conniving at first between these two at first. It's stolen glances, secret wanting, and knowing you shouldn't want the other one, but secretly wanting them instead. The family rivalry is really the story behind the "enemies" here, and it's an interesting twist when it comes out. If you're looking for a quick read (I had a hard time putting it down), and one that will have you swooning and with a few laugh out loud moments, then I suggest picking up Bitter Rival today, and enjoying it with your favorite glass of wine.

I completely loved this book! Their families have had a feud going on for years but do both sides know what caused this feud? It’s time to get this feud over! Julia and James are so perfect together! Get this book and read it!

The hatred these families had was real, and only half of them knew the real story. I couldn’t put this book down as I was cheering for these characters to fight through this war. I was stunned that her father followed through. Hate and grudges are so strong. Jen captured that well in this story.

I love all of Jenn’s books and this one didn’t disappoint. It has a permanent place on my favorites shelf!! Loved the enemies to lovers aspect!! Modern day Romeo and Juliet with a happy ending!!

I absolutely loved this anthology and I think that it represents PKD and his work very well. He has a way not only with words but to make you think differently and look outside the world as you know it. While some of his stories in this collection are better than others I can't say there was one bad story in the bunch.He has a talent for creating worlds and writing characters that are engaging and fully fleshed out. This will be one book I will read more than once.

Widely known and praised by his long string of novels, Philip K. Dick was also a prolific (if underappreciated) writer of short fiction. This 2002 anthology published by "Panteon Books" serves as a perfect introduction for the neophyte wishing to delve into the main obsessions and recurrent themes of an author who has persistently remained in the outer fringes of the literary canon.This book showcases some of the abilities of PKD in the difficult art of the short story form. The 21 stories reprinted here are taken both from early, middle and late periods of his literary career. A representative (if not exhausting) treasury of Dick's best and most influential fictions. The reader unacquainted with Dick will soon realize while reading this book the big debt that most modern action and science fiction films owe to this author.As with all anthologies, the materials here featured are somewhat uneven, and not all the stories have the same level of brilliance. My personal favourites are "Imposter", "Second Variety", "The Exit Door Leads In" and "Rautavaara's Case", all of which have struck me as literary masterpieces. Other quite good stories are the famous "The Minority Report, "Paycheck", "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale", "Foster, You're Dead", "Upon the Dull Earth" and "Adjustment Team". Unfortunately, there are a few "duds" as well, being "The Days of Perky Pat", "Faith of Our Fathers", "A Game of Unchance" or the awful "The King of the Elves" some of the worst in the pack. The rest of the stories are alright, not great nor bad, just entertaining. Some of the plot details used in them have become slightly dated though, such as the Cold War, the atomic war craze, Eastern versus Western bloc, etc. But by the same token, other themes like consumerism, classism, cultural conflicts or corporate control are still relevant today and smartly dealt with in these pages.Although PKD was far from being a great literary stylist, I think that his short stories tend to be fresher and better written than his novels (which for me are rather dreadful) and because of their short length they are usually able to convey Dick's recurrent themes of paranoia and unreality more proficiently. At his best, Dick can be extremely subversive and ingenious, and the thought-provoking quality of stories such as "The Exit Door Leads In" or "Rautavaara's Case" shouldn't be underestimated. He can be tragic, humorous, caustic, terrifying, extravagant, sadistic or just plain hallucinatory (sometimes all of it at once). Perhaps not a GENIUS in the strict sense of the word, but a worthy figure nonetheless that deserves the attention of anyone interested in literature with philosophical substance.The material quality of the book is top-notch; the volume is a beautiful solid hardback printed on white (not recycled) paper. The font size of the text does not strain the eyes and the cover also comes with a dust-jacket plus an excellent binding. This printing is the kind of book that goes from one generation to another if proper care is taken about it.Three stars for the overall contents of the book, plus one more for the quality of the edition.

I might as well admit this at the beginning of the review: I am not generally a fan of short stories. I'm not making any sort of universal statement here so much as saying that I think the form tends to elevate shallow writing that is built around some sort of twist or reveal at the end. Bradbury is a bete noire of mine because of this very tendency, but he shares with many science fiction writers that genre's tendency toward writing about ideas instead of emotions or relationships, which has tended to turn a lot of people off of this particular genre as it can be difficult for a lot of people to connect with that approach. The genre does have its natural strengths: people are always interested in progress and the future, and moreso than many genres, sci-fi lends naturally to the exploration of social, political, and moral issues in its stories. I'm admittedly a huge sci-fi nut for those reasons, though I can understand why a lot of people are scared away.It's those people, though, who would get the most out of Philip K. Dick. Dick falls into almost none of the pitfalls that I mentioned previously. His short stories are excellent examples of the form, with strong ideas and surprisingly rich themes to boot. Dick's work has obviously been adapted to the screen many times, and a good handful of stories from the book are recognizable from their film adaptations, but the original stories are frequently more interesting and more substantive than the feature films they inspired! So, the average-ish Ben Affleck thriller Paycheck turns out to have been inspired by a story not only about seeing the future, but also about commercial-government tensions and its character turns out to be an anti-hero, motivated by corporate greed. Minority Report was a more successful (and much better) film than Paycheck, and it too is vastly different from its film. The basic ideas (precogs, arresting murderers before they commit their crimes) but in the story, the protagonist has to stop a military coup in Washington (and it lacks the film's sappy ending, too, which is a plus). There are, of course, lots of cool stories here that have not been made into movies, like the post-apocalyptic "Second Variety", in which a few remnants of humanity have to fight against an army of rebellious androids that come in three varieties, as well as some of Dick's more trippy writing, like a story in which an elderly man is asked to become the "king of the dwarves" in their battle against the gnomes, in which it certainly seems like he's going crazy, but the story is told from his perspective and it leaves some ambiguity. It's scary, fascinating, sad, and brainy, but also a little funny in a darkly comic way: that's the Dick trademark, I suppose.Most science fiction writers who become successful are good at coming up with nifty concepts and cool ideas, and Dick obviously has those, but even more impressive to me is the emotional component that Dick brings to his writing. This is a lot harder for me to deconstruct, but suffice it to say that Dick has that little extra something that turns a good story into a great one. When a story is supposed to be tragic, it almost always is. When the writing is supposed to be exciting, Dick pulls it off. His ability to define characters briefly and thoroughly certainly helps here, but Dick simply just knows how to engage the heart as well as the head, which is likely what has won him such an exalted place among science fiction writers over the years. That place is well-merited. I highly recommend this book to everyone.

This is an amazing short story collection for anyone, let alone the great Philip K. Dick. I've long enjoyed Mr. Dick's short stories and think he might have been a better short story writer than novelist. Among some of the gems in this collection are "The Minority Report" (made into a movie), "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale" (made into the film Total Recall), "I Hope I Shall Arrive Soon," Paycheck" (made into a movie), "Second Variety" (made into the film Screamers), and several others. I would, however, avoid "Roog," which I think was his earliest piece and in my opinion, the weakest of this collection. I also don't care for "The King of the Elves," but that's just me. It might appeal to others. This book is a must for any Philip K. Dick fan, and it's a great introduction into his writing style and themes. Strongly recommended.
