Another winner From Kohn...I have never found any book that had such a complete history of Dao Yin. You can learn about the evolution of qigong from before Christ to the present time. Fun to compare the different exercises, and see how certain ones, like bending at the waist help digestion, so you could almost create your own program if you had the knowledge from your teacher and this book. For adepts, it gives deep insight into taoist practices; for beginners there is plenty here to get you started on the Way

This book is a MUST READ for anyone interested in the history and practice of Daoist exercises. There are many excellent descriptions of exercises that are relatively easy to follow. I enjoyed every page.

A worth while read, Livia shows a strong understanding of the history of Dao yin, or Qigong like practices. She admits the importance of help of insights from contemporary Qi gong practitioners, which a rare show of humility from an academic.. The book is useful in terms it gives an impression of the type of Chi cultivation practices by various different Taoist sects. The book rightly brings in to question some of the authenticity's of contemporary Qigong Masters in America. However the book in quite deficient in it explanations of the various Dao yin practices. Written descriptions are vague and do not describe the exercises sufficiently to be meaningful. I do not have the expectations of being able to learn dao yin from the book, but I would like to know general favour, or style of what these ancient exercise looked like. It is possible for archaeologist to do reconstructions to give the public an impression, so why not historians as well ? I feel here the big problem is that most academic works is the lack of practical experience of the subject they are translating and commentating on. Livia has done a lot Indian yoga, but she is a relatively new comer to Qi gong. While this gives her more of an insight into to Taoist esoteric practices than most academics it is not the same as Dao yin.It should be remember that the academics are in the position, of people who are on the outside the temple making comments on, what life might be like inside the temple ? Yet they can be relied upon on giving a more un-bias account of the history and nature of esoteric practice. Where as people teaching a brand of contemporary practice have a vested interest in claiming the biggest and best. Livia book does arm the reader to some extent with the ability make a more informed choice.

With out a doubt, the must have book if you are interested in the history and origins of modern day qigong practices. College textbook callibur of information. Although there are some great practices taught in this book, is it not the emphasis of the author and therefore pictures and diagrams are limited when compared to other titles. Someone looking for indept technique may want to move along, but otherwise this book is a quality addition to any taoist art/qigong library.

Great book with many citations a descriptions of practical exercises from classics of taoism. You can try some exercises from the book for your daily life. Useful for qigong and traditional chinese medicine enthusiasts.

I was looking for info on a constitutional remedy and stumbled upon an online preview of this book. As 'luck' would have it, the preview had the chapter on the needed remedy in its entirety (though most other chapters were missing from the preview). I got what I needed, so I didn't really need the book anymore, but I was SO impressed that I ordered it anyway!I agree with the other reviewers - this book is hard to put down! I have nearly finished the whole book, even though most of the remedies did not apply to anyone I know. It is exceedingly well-written and details the subtle differences between the remedies. I especially liked how he mentioned other remedies in each chapter, further clarifying the differences between several remedies which might confuse the practitioner at first glance.I am absolutely blown away by this book! I'm not a practitioner, so I cannot comment on the accuracy of the info from a clinical perspective, but I can say that his descriptions were uncannily accurate, on the several remedies that matched my loved ones. I have a keen, personal interest in Homeopathy, and have read only a few books on constitional remedies, but so far, this blows them all away! By far the most in-depth Homeopathy book I've ever read!I was also impressed with the author's knowledge of and correlations with mythological archetypes, which proved very useful.If I may be so bold, I would venture to say that practitioners would find much of value in this book, even if they disagree with some of the author's observations.

I returned it. I guess this is a homeopathically sound book, but it was much too confusing and unclear. Not for the layman.

I am loving this book. A lot of wisdom.

A very interesting perspective on why people behave the way they do in an imbalanced condition. Each homeopathic remedy is a chapter that explains the personality profile, physical attributes and emotional and behavioral habits of people that would benefit from that remedy.

It provides a much deeper analysis of some very important remedies, many of which are sadly overlooked but other books on the subject.It helped me to find Sepia with which to treat endometriosis, and Medorrhinum which i used successfully to treat chronic hives and associated allergies. This book inspired me so much I have began professional training to be a homeopath.

This is not an easy read for the average health nut. This is more an in depth study of personality types and remedies. A textbook to help practicioners better serve their clients.

Simple and fun deduction game that anyone can learn and enjoy racing to find the one correct spot on the board.Pros:-Quick and easy game setup.-Simple deduction as a race makes out thinking opponents fun and exhilarating.-Only two options per turn makes turns easy yet very important. (either try and figure out one persons clue or possibly give away your clue in hopes to find multiple clues and possibly winning the game)-Game allows players to be tricky and hide their clue as long as possible the more you understand the game.-Limitless combinations of game setups create fresh puzzles every experience. (online website creates random setups for you)-Perfect amount of game time ranging from very quick (game ended in 2 minutes after a very lucky guess) to about 30 mins max to figure out the puzzle.Cons:-Can bring some AP during turns, thinking maybe bring in a sand timer to limit player turns time.-Someone can win on a lucky guess but still ends up being a fun memory and doesn't feel like a waste of time because the games are light and quick.Overall well worth the time and money to play and experience something like this with anyone and everyone.P.S. Hopefully the designer is going to complete the two player variant soon like he's stated on the BGG forum.

We're huge deduction game fans. And this is one quickly became one of our favorites.Somethings that it does that:* Adds a great visual element to classic deduction* Screwups can easily be fixed. Nothing worst than one mistake that ruins the game.* Great replay-ability. Love the modular board and different levels of play.Things it gets wrong:* It really needs a deduction note pad to keep track of your clues. You can print out some great ones from boardgame geek, but it's really should have been included.* Could really use more thematic elements. We're hunting mythical creatures, but all we get is triangles and cylinders!I whole heartedly suggest this game!

This game is easy to learn, gorgeous to look at, clever, interesting, and most of all: FUN! We laugh so much as we scratch our heads... You've gotta try it.

I really enjoy this game. I have played more than a dozen times and sometimes I feel like I'm actually getting better at it. haha. Not winning does not affect my enjoyment of the game at all though. It's crafty little deduction game in the vein of CLUE, but without all the dumb rolling dice and moving around a board just so you can ask questions. You want to ask someone about their clue. You can do it! Ask about anywhere. Ask anyone. Make deductions. All without artifical restrictions that are only there to slow down a game. Cryptid is fun and thinky, but not so long that you can't get in two or three games with your pals in an evening. The only complaint (and its a complaint many people online have) is those stupid game piece colors. They're just too similar. It's the one blemish in an otherwise fantastic little game.

I was hoping this would be a new clue deduction game with an interesting mechanic. Playing it a few times, each game ended up falling flat and boring. Winning the game was the most non-climactic win I have ever seen. It's a shame since the design and effort that went into the game is very clear.

Why play Clue when you can hunt down Bigfoot?

it’s a good game and right up my alley however the game does not include enough components, hopefully the publisher will remedy this issue as we’ve run out of components in more than half of the games i’ve played.

While I visited over 60 times in 10 years (we have a team there), I never had an incident involving risk to me or my belongings. There is no need for a bodyguard or any of the multiple vaccines. I drove alone for much of the country, always got help in getting directions, gave rides to people asking on the roads (they always offered money, I never accepted) without a single incident but the usual traffic police taking bribes (yes, I was speeding). As an American I can't bribe any foreign agent, so... Kyiv is a great European Capital with the real charm of real antiquity unlike many fake cities in Europe that try to look old as a tourist attraction (tourist traps). A really old city is not perfect, so one will find that in Kyiv, Lviv and Odessa as well. All of them well worth the visit for travelers interested in seeing and experiencing the real centuries old cities of Europe. From Pagan idols, the Viking influences, Mongols invasions, all left their mark throughout the territory of this very interesting civilization. Back to the book: worth reading. I found that even after that many visits I was breaking some protocols the Ukrainians hold in high regard.

This very small book (smaller format than a typical paperback, 168 pages, large font, double-spaced, big margins) is in fact only about half about "customs & culture". Instead, there are long chapters on very general travel and historical info -- the sort of thing easily available on Wiki or in the travel guide you also undoubtedly will have (I use Lonely Planet; I am in Ukraine now).I read this little book in a couple hours, and while useful as a breezy history, there were only about 40 useful pages -- the best were the 18 pages of "Business Briefing" (the author is a business development consultant).Additionally, don't belive that this is a 2012 book -- it was first published in 2005 and most of the travel info seems from then. The author refers to river ferries from Kiev (long cancelled) and lists websites last update in 2008.Overall, don't let the low price fool you -- it's still not worth it. And, shame shame on the author, supposedly an M.Phil. from Cambridge and speaker of 7 languages, for putting her name on such a deceptive little book -- I would have loved 168 pages of "customs & culture" from her, but that's not in here.

The book tries to intimidate readers regarding customs and superstitions but things are far more relaxed than the book made out to be. As of my two Ukraine visits in 2011 and 2012, this book is outdated. The book says that clearing customs is very difficult and the customs agents are stone cold stern and foreigner-hating. This isn't true, customs was a snap, agents very nice and my bags were never even inspected either time on arrival to Kiev from U.S. and certainly not when flying within Ukraine. Traditions/superstitions info was also outdated - e.g. it is NOT required to keep up with the host's alcoholism/toasting; anyone, not just the toastmaster, can toast; the young people I spent time with rolled their eyes and laughed out loud at the book's advice on flower giving (number and colors), not opening windows in a train because of "drafts", and many other superstitions: the urban 20-somethings don't believe in this stuff anymore. Contrary to what the book said, money-changing in the cities is a snap, there's a place to do it on almost every block and they don't try to rip you off. I followed the book's advice on gentlemanly manners, holding doors open, standing when a lady stands etc - and it was over the top, the well-bred ladies I was with were noticeably embarrassed by such treatment; none of them were used to it. (Can't say it hurt anything though.) Contrary again to what the book says, nobody batted an eye when I went hatless in winter. The above info might be useful in small western towns and around old folks, but useless in cities. The rest of the book is adequate, but you don't need this book to learn it; any guidebook will do, e.g lonely planet beats it hands down re: useful info: where to stay, eat, what to see.

Not a bad book but not what I wanted to see and was lower than what I expected. I had hoped for something with more depth. Perhaps good for those just starting to learn about Ukraine but I wanted to see more about myths, such as when young women sit on cement or stone and a Babushka scolds them for it, etc. And, I wanted to read more about wedding traditions, much more. It lacks more than it provides in my mind...sorry. Not a bad book, just not what I needed to read.

simple, to the point and good reading. I went to Kiev this year and followed many of the book's items about Kiev accurately. Nice interest points of cultures and customs of Ukraine. I would recommend for interested readers.

Most of the contents are very specific to areas of culture that do not pertain to most casual tourists, unless they are fortunate enough to be invited into someone's home, or they have business dealings in Ukraine. If you do, then this would be useful as an add-on, but most of the information can be found in the larger, more encompassing guide book.

Rather than using wards like dearth, know that a plasma is not a cake, nor kutcha a soup. As a Ukrainian-American, I know that those items are dead wrong. This makes me suspicious of the research and reliability of the rest of the book.

I read the book cover to cover. I already knew a lot about Ukraine. This book sticks with the facts. This book is fairly recent, and does a very good job of covering all aspects of Ukraine ,in a short consice manner. I recomend this book for anyone who wants to get a quick overview of Ukraine.
