Brilliant research for parents, teachers, doctors and caregivers but it paints a dire future for orchid child raised in an adverse environments with no hope, and even a rather convincing argument that the inevitable solution is suicide. Dr. Boyce does a great job explaining why, and to some degree how, we should make sure that orchid children are raised in healthy, supportive environments. But he seems tone deaf to the implications of his book, and the example of his beloved sister, for adult orchids raised in adverse environments. For them hope is often the only thin thread holding them to life and his book takes away hope for them. IMHO the 7.5%-10% of orchids from adverse childhoods should not read this book.

Dr. Boyce invites us to journey with him through 30 plus years of enlightening research into early childhood development as it relates to epidemiology, stress, environment and emotional health. Unpacking the complexities of how children fare through trauma, challenges, environment and family of origin issues, W. Thomas Boyce leads the reader through a series of narratives both professional and personal along with fascinating research he and teams of pediatric researchers uncover about young children. Surprisingly the results were not entirely what as they had expected. From biological, mental, social, psychological and environmental findings collected from hundreds of children, two categories of children began to emerge making sense of their collected data : the orchid more sensitive child and the hardy dandelion child. To that end, much wisdom unfolds for all of us as to what differentiates the orchid child from the dandelion child regardless of his or her demographic and other variables. Most importantly Dr. Boyce along with his colleagues and research teams observed over and over again how a nurturing environment impacts the development for the "orchid-esque" child in terms of his or her ability to thrive. In a loving and understanding environment these children not only thrive but most often soar! With great hope given for all the world's children intertwined with helpful narratives, fascinating insights, poetry and professional expertise this book offers parents, those who work closely with children or parents and even those of us who appreciate insights into our own family of origin not to mention our own child within... oceans of wisdom!

I read this remarkable book as a physician, as a parent of adopted children and as a Christian deeply interested in the human condition. At all levels I was enriched. Dr Boyce not only brings clarity as he explains a whole new area of understanding in the biology and psychology of human development, he also gives us an enthralling exciting view of the scientific method at work and those who dedicate their lives to its pursuit. As there is no one who does not have an interest in the children around them or the child they were, there is no none who would not find this book edifying

Dr. Boyce’s book tackles the complex subject of childhood development drawn from his many years of insightful and innovative research. He identifies two groups of children, the “orchids” who need special nurturing to achieve their best and “dandelions,” those who are better equipped to overcome adversity. He convincingly explains the connectivity of neurobiology, the environment along with genetic impacts on a child’s development. I found his writing style to be particularly engaging and easy to read. Young parents would do well to read what Dr. Boyce has to share.

Super negative perspective on "Orchid" children. Dr. Elaine N. Aron talks about the same thing in her book, The Highly Sensitive Child in a much more positive light. Don't waste your time with Orchids and Dandelions.

This book is exceptional and provides excellent insight in to how sensitive children navigate through the world. If you’ve stumbled on this book, congrats and you have lucked out.I was familiar with Dr. Boyce’s research before this book was published and, as a parent, I’ve actually found it reassuring (despite some of the reviews indicating it paints a bleek picture). I disagree, it provides hope.Raising a child with sensory issues is a baffling experience and as a parent of an eight year old, I’ve found we are under constant scrutiny by grandparents, teachers and peers. Our decisions are even dissected even by close friend and neighbors who can’t fathom what is like to raise an intense emotional child that struggles with anxiety and self- regulation. It is refreshing and Ive shared it with family because it’s scensical, elequent and insightful.

This is a remarkable book that weaves together ground-breaking medical research about child development with powerful personal insights about families and children. No other book I have read about these subjects has been as significant or inspiring as this one! Dr. Tom Boyce reveals why and how we all live inside these realities of human development, and how to better live and love for the sake of all our thriving.

It's a rare find. The quality of these paper is almost bad, but the content is wonderful. Definitely worth owning. Don't judge the book by its cover or paper ( admitting both are too basic for such a great book).

If you read a lot of books in this genre, then this is likely to be a retread of older studies for you. If not, then you might enjoy it. It's an easy read, and there's a lot of fascinating material. That said, the author's own "hidden" biases are on full display as well. His chapter on racist bias immediately and definitively sets about showing that racism exists - the author relaying his own personal experiences with it as a minority - and then explores why. In fact, he has a couple of chapters that deal with racism in a fairly masterful way. Those are worth a read. However, in the chapter on sexism, he spends a few pages rambling on about how there's no real way to establish in any useful form that sexism is behind any individual incident that involves a woman. He eventually did get it together and pull out of his spiral to discuss sexism as experienced by trans individuals, but not without the disclaimer that a lot of that discrimination might be attributable to bias against alternative sexuality. Having read substantial amounts of - yes, scientific - as well as less rigorous studies into sexism, I found that chapter sloppy and poorly assembled. It was clearly not the priority for him that racism was. And being dismissive of 51% of the global population is probably a poor strategy for success. I'd have more respect for his book if he simply said, "I'm going to focus on racism since it's where my interest lies," and then not addressed sexism at all. Fair enough - we tend to speak to what we know. But to throw in a sloppy, poorly assembled chapter on sexism, and then act as if it could barely be quantified as a societal force - despite the massive crowds of people globally saying otherwise - felt insulting and dismissive. Definitely a turn-off.All in all, I can't give this a huge thumbs up or down. It's okay. But if you're only going to read one book in this genre, I'd recommend "Mistakes were Made But Not By Me" or "Dataclysm."

This was a very enjoyable read, as most people are not consciously rascist or sexist, but they do have hidden biases of which they are not even aware. I just wish there was more than one chapter about sex bias; the author does first-person interviews with a man-to-woman transgender, and also a woman-to-man transgender working at the same place in the same scientific field, and compares their experiences before and after the gender change. That's one of the most compelling and credible things I've ever read about sex bias in the workplace, and I do wish he included more examples or expanded to more chapters.Unfortunately, this book was also repetitive about race bias. There are several chapters about that, but it does seem that the author only tested for bias on Americans and only on black or white people. He didn't test for bias against any other races or by any other races. That makes this book somewhat incomplete. Also, I have my own bias: I think that Americans make everything about race, especially after Obama. In the current news, Meghan Markle just got engaged to Prince Harry, and the big deal in the tabloids is that she's half African-American. So, does race matter or does it not? If it's not supposed to be important, then why is it being reported at all? Maybe that's why racial bias is so prevalent here--it's not important, except when it is, and then it's a big deal.

Unlike our normal (conscious) brain, which is live and tangible, the unconscious brain, referred to in this book as the "hidden brain", is intangible and elusive. In fact its own existence was in question. Ever since it was given its name (by Friedrich Schiller in 18th century) it was questioned or even rejected by some psychologists. However, its function and influence were evident enough to engage the attention of famous psychologists like Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung who developed the concept and employed it in psychoanalysis and other psychological problems. In fact, Freud made the concept popular and it became one of his main contributions to psychology.Freud likened the mind to an iceberg with its tip (above the water ) being the conscious mind and the bulk of it (under the water), being the unconscious mind. This is significant as it implies that most of mental work is done by the unconscious mind. Later research and development showed this to be true. Indeed some psychologists believe that only 25 percent of our mind's work is accomplished by our conscious mind. What is curious about this arrangement is that the conscious mind is mostly unaware of the actions of the unconscious mind. This is not only surprising but also mystifying. In other words , after having made a seemingly conscious decision we would be told it was really the hidden brain that had done the work,or at least had guided us to the decision. If someone is told that he does not understand how his mind works he is likely to be offended, yet, this has become an acceptable fact in psychology. The contents of this unconscious mind have been somewhat of a mystery. Freud thought it is a reservoir containing our feelings, concerns, fears, and memories which are outside the scope of our awareness. The reason they are suppressed down below is because their surfacing might be disturbing or annoying, e.g. like remembering an ugly crime . How can one access this reservoir? One way is through psychoanalysis as Freud had done using the power of reasoning and allowing several sessions to unravel a patient's background. More often the contents surface in dreams or else through hypnosis. On reading about this strange arrangement one cannot help but wonder: Was this an integral part of our creation, or did it evolve in us over time?Although we are accustomed to think of the unconscious mind at the personal level, the author gives it another dimension by demonstrating its effect in groups and institutions. He does this using anecdotes and case studies. The danger here is that often the anecdote is in itself so exciting that it overshadows the psychological analysis. One issue dealt with here is racial bias which is presumably generated by our unconscious brain. One researcher in Canada, G. Aboud, tried to trace the origin of this issue by showing little children a picture of a white man and a black man. She would tell the little 3-5 years-old stories about a robbery, or any other offending event, and ask the children to point to the possible culprit in the picture. Invariably most of them would point to the black man . No matter how the question was repeated the result was the same. Where did this bias come from? Parents? Teachers? Friends? She wondered. And would it be embedded and sealed in their hidden reservoir until it surfaces later in life creating our modern-day problematic racial discrimination?Surely, there is a lot more research to be done on this mystifying unconscious mind.Fuad R. QubeinAugust,2016

This was a great book that I couldn’t put down. Shankar is a great storyteller, which personalizes and creates a visceral response to scientific/psychological subject matter that most would rather pass on. He tackles tough subjects to bring light to areas of our life where we may be making unconscious choices and then logically validating them?Want to know how Obama could overcome racism, why we’re terrible witnesses, or why we just don’t like some people? Give this a try

#39,266 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

Summary: Guide works, but definitely use other resources in conjunction.I bought this about 2 months prior to taking the SIFT exam. This booklet has a good amount of information about the test, sections, timing, and it gives a good baseline to start from for somebody entering the exam with 0 prior knowledge of aviation. The spatial apperception, hidden figures, and simple drawings were fairly spot on.That being said, there was a lot of information on the test (specifically the Army Aviation Section) that was not anywhere in the study guide. A lot of questions regarding the missions of Army aircraft, training location, IMSAFE checklists, and types of airspace were not covered. The practice tests in the Math and Mechanical knowledge did not go into enough detail to "ace" the test.I think this is a good start, and I would probably reccomend starting here. But this is not an "end all, be all". Use the FAA Rotorwing Handbook to supplement the aviation section. Use YouTube (Khan Academy) to study math and mechanical comprehension. Google Trivium Test Prep "SIFT practice test" to work on speed in hidden figures and simple drawings. Use ACT practice tests to work on the reading stuff. I did all the above and did fine.

Not perfect, was missing some stuff that was on the SIFT. But it's the quickest, easiest way for someone with ZERO experience to learn the bare minimum to PASS the SIFT. Dont expect to blow it out of the water unless you've been a pilot before. I remember a couple typos, nothing major though.I would reccomend going through this book cover to cover, including the practice tests. Then keep taking online practice exams and use online flashcards for best results.

I think this product is great, easy to understand, to the point , without excessive 'fluff". It puts me at ease that I am properly preparing and it gives me confidence that I will do better than if I did not use this tool. Hidden figures are extremely challenging and more complex than other available study guides. Also, I like how reading comprehension includes text about flight and not some random texts. Mechanical comprehension goes more in depth and cover more concepts than some other study guides.

This study guide covers the basics pretty well. Like others have said, don't soley use this guide as your only studying material. The SIFT is more or less the ASVAB with different subjects tailored for Aviation, so keep that in mind when studying. Expect the test to be really outdated with confusing questions that you won't understand how to answer (I wish I was joking).Math and Mechanical Comprehension were the hardest for me personally. Aviation section surprised me with some questions as they were very specific and not covered in anything I read. So do some homework and you'll be fine.I took the sift last spring and scored a 56 with a few months of casual studying beforehand.

Not the worst but not the best. I noticed several typos and incorrect questions/phrasing. If you are totally green to aviation though, then it’s an okay guide at showing the fundamentals and what skills to dust off for the test.Use Khan Academy videos on YouTube to brush up on math instead of read it from a book, flight simulator for spatial apperception, and the first few chapters of the FAA handbook for helicopters. Do that on top of reading anything of substance to bone up on the reading comprehension portion and you’ll do fine on the test.

Bought this book just to see what I'd be looking at when going into the sift. Coming from a fixed wing side it helped a bit but still had some errors and typos as others have stated.Passed the sift it helped would recommend using other resources for the hidden figures.

The book breaks down every module of the test to a level that is easily understood. Even myself, it's been years since I've done some of the math involved, and I've never seen some of the aviation portions, but the study guide helps explain them easily enough for me to grasp the concept and work with solving the problems. So far this has been the best study guide I've seen.

This was the better study guide. The questions were more in line with the actual test. The answer explanations were spot on. Highly recommend.
