Review

“Wonderfully told, impressively researched…For fans of outdoor adventure, Alone on the Ice brings you as close to trekking in a blizzard on icy, dangerous terrain as you’ll likely want to get.” - Chuck Leddy, Minneapolis Star Tribune“Impressively seamless and straightforward.” - Christina Thompson, Boston Globe“A chilling story…You feel the freezing temperatures, the fear, the desperation, along with the loyalty of the other Australasian Antarctic Expedition members.” - Sandra Dallas, Denver Post“In Alone on the Ice, Roberts, a veteran mountain climber and chronicler of adventures, admirably succeeds in restoring the luster that the Australian Antarctic Expedition and its leader deserve.” - Dennis Drabelle, Washington Post“A fresh and thoroughly researched account of Doulas Mawson's epic journey of self-rescue across one of the most inhospitable regions known to man. Roberts takes the reader alongside the men of the 1912 Australasian Antarctic Expedition, and the desperation of Mawson s sledge journey can be well imagined step by frigid step.” - Ed Viesturs, author of K2: Life and Death on the World's Most Dangerous Mountain“Others have written the loose outlines of Douglas Mawson's astonishing survival against the worst conditions that Antarctica can deliver a lesser-known but equally compelling epic as that of Ernest Shackleton but Roberts's telling trumps them all.” - Gordon Wiltsie, author of To the Ends of the Earth“This is Roberts at his best, telling a little-known tale of adventure, tragedy, and endurance. Mawson may be the most famous Australian explorer, and Alone on the Ice is an admirable introduction of him to American readers.” - Greg Child, author of Over the Edge“An accurate and enthralling account of the greatest story of polar exploration and survival. Roberts takes the reader back to a time of hardship, collective friendship, and a level of determination unknown in todays culture. This book will make you cherish every meal and the joys of a warm bed.” - Conrad Anker, coauthor of The Lost Explorer: Finding Mallory on Mt. Everest

Author of The Mountain Of Fear, David Roberts delivers one of the most remarkable survival stories ever told. This heart-racing adventure of courage, strength, and the will to live is indeed a book that will keep you awake all night, impossible to put down! Within the first few chapters, the reader will begin to feel almost as if caffeine is pumping through their blood as we read about near-death situations. Douglas Mawson, a great explorer and expedition leader of the Australasian Antarctic finds himself starving, crawling, and escaping dangerous situations in extreme cold weather situations. His team of men were against all odds in surviving the almost impossible horrifying events that were thrown upon them with no food, no first-aid, and no supplies to help them in their amazing journey. As those who managed to survive had to battle with fear in near-misses, and the only thing that kept them alive was their incredible spirit. This adventure is chilling from beginning to end with colorful characters, stunning photos, and an eye-opener story of courage. Entertaining, riveting, heart-pounding, and impressive. Highly recommended!

After whipping through a couple great polar exploration books, I got a copy of Alone on the Ice. (Btw, I highly recommend both of these: Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage, which is the well known account of Shackleton's ill-fated, but miraculous survival in Antarctic and Arctic Adventure: My Life in the Frozen North, which though hugely popular in its day, is something of a lost classic that is a great read filled with lots of well told dramatic adventure while [unlike Endurance] giving insight into native Eskimo culture, which is fascinating.)In "Alone on the Ice," David Roberts tells the true story of what Sir Edmund Hillary called "the greatest survival story in the history of exploration." Hillary was referring to the 1912 expedition of Australian explorer Douglas Mawson and his fellow members of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (AAE). Mawson and cohorts set out to explore Antarctica with the intention of gathering specimens and to make scientific observations of the continent. What has left Mawson's considerable accomplishments and amazing survival story obscured by the layers of newsprint and time is--unlike Roald Amundsen and Robert Scott--he wasn't a pole bagger. Mawson, never grabbed headlines by "summiting" the south pole. Mawson and the AAE's expedition went virtually unnoticed by the public. Now, at the 100th year anniversary of the expedition, Roberts tells the story of Mawson, alone after his companions had died during the expedition, an expedition that saw them trek over 600 miles round trip while being face with 100 miles per hour winds, and left with little of their original provisions. Left as a lone explorer, Mawson was forced to make a ninety-five mile trek across the Antarctic Ice while battling extreme hunger, madness, and the deadly terrain of the continent.During his trek Mawson often had to crawl as a result of losing the flesh from the soles of his feet. And at one point, he fell into a deadly crevice that would have likely killed almost anyone else. However, Mawson, inspired by a poem by Robert. W. Service, was able to extricate himself out of the crevice with what could only be considered superhuman strength, determination, and extraordinary will. Roberts tells Mawson's story well and has seemingly done his research thorough, including some great, rarely-seen photos (one of an iced-over face is bizarre, as is the shot of an explorer's contortions to stay upright in a 100-mile an hour wind). The photos are by Frank Hurley, who is famous from his Endurance photos. In sum, this is a very engaging read. Robert's detailed description of Mawson's determination, perseverance, and courage gives Mawson the heroic recognition while provided classic adventure story entertainment.

This factual recounting of a scientific expedition to Antarctica is at times unbelievable, at times inspiring, at times tragic. The author never sensationalizes the facts or the telling of them, which makes the story even more incredible and a fantastic page-turner.

An interesting book about an amazing Antartic survival story, in which Douglas Mawson sledged alone to reach his base. I learned a great deal about Antarctica and the costs of exploration from it.

This book is essentially a biography of Douglas Mawson, the Australian Antarctic explorer who in 1912 survived a 30-day, almost 300-mile trek alone back to camp after his two teammates died. One of his teammates fell down a crevasse along with the sledge that carried most of the team's important equipment and most of its food, and the other died thereafter due to exposure, so Mawson had to survive on half or fewer rations. Mawson was a geology professor at the University of Adelaide and wanted to explore as much of the continent as possible rather than reach the South Pole (he was with Shackleton in 1908 when they came within 95 miles of the pole). He formed the Australasian Expedition with 24 members who landed and wintered over in what turned out to be the windiest spot on earth; some of the members, including Mawson, spent two winters there. The book is well-organized and Roberts is a great storyteller who argues that from a scientific standpoint the expedition achieved and explored more than those of the more famous Antarctic explorers Amundsen, Scott and Shackleton. Roberts finds little fault with Mawson and reviewed many letters, diaries and other primary sources. Roberts may have gone a little overboard defending Mawson against attacks made in 2001 by the son of one of the other expedition members. At the end of the book Roberts makes a perfunctory comment that Mawson had his faults, but the book rarely delved into them. Some people doubt Mawson's story that, after his teammates died, he fell in a crevasse to a depth of 14 feet hanging only by a rope, and in his weakened and starved condition climbed hand-over-hand most of the way, fell back down, then climbed hand-over-hand a second time to escape the crevasse. The book discusses a modern attempt (which failed) to replicate this feat and others have expressed doubt about its authenticity, but makes no comment on whether Mawson fabricated or embellished the story. One hundred years later I don't think anyone can say if the story is definitely true or not, but Roberts should at least have acknowledged that others doubt Mawson was telling the truth about it. Amazon.com Review

"The STRINGS all soar, the REEDS implore, / The BRASSES roar with notes galore. / It's music that we all adore. / It's what we go to concerts for." In this exuberant tribute to classical music and the passionate, eccentric musicians who play it, author Lloyd Moss begins with the mournful moan and silken tone of one trombone. A trumpet sings and stings along, forming a duo, then a fine French horn joins in, "TWO, now THREE-O, what a TRIO!" The mellow cello ups it to a quartet, then ZIN! ZIN! ZIN! a violin soars high and moves in to make a quintet. The flute that "sends our soul a-shiver" makes a sextet, and "with steely keys that softly click," a sleek, black, woody clarinet slips the group into a septet. We move on! A chamber group of ten! And the orchestra is ready to begin. Moss should be congratulated for creating a playful, musical stream of rhyming couplets that seamlessly, slyly teaches the names of myriad musical groups. Marjorie Priceman, the whimsical, masterful illustrator of Elsa Okon Rael's When Zaydeh Danced on Eldridge Street and Jack Prelutsky's For Laughing Out Loud, won a Caldecott Honor Award for this swirling, twirling, colorful musical world worthy of thunderous applause and a standing ovation. From Publishers Weekly

This debut book by author Moss, as kids today would say is boss. Its clever, jazzy verse presents (In language that is never dense) a helpful intro to each orchestra instrument-how some are alike but rather more are different. He starts with the trombone's "mournful moan," playing solo (i.e., alone); then adds a trumpet, French horn and cello-all sounding forth a signature "hello." Each musical portrait (in quatrains) abounds with perfectly chosen, alliterative sounds. Thus the flute, notes Moss, "sends our soul a-shiver; flute, that slender silver sliver." And Priceman's zany art's just right, with loose-limbed figures taking flight around each spread in garb bizarre, if proving how funky musicians are. With every new instrument joining the throng of diligent players practicing song, Moss incorporates numbers and stops only when his team finally reaches a "chamber group of ten." So the book can be used as a counting tool (A great way to perk up a dull day at school): but it really works best, it's easy to see, as a deft means of meeting the symphony. So a plentiful praise to this finely matched pair, whose pictures and words show unusual flair.Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

#61,588 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This is one of the most read books in our home library! I've been reading this book to my 4.5 year old since she was about a year old and we love the rhyming. What I like most about this book is that it's different. I'm tired of reading about farm animals, trucks, ponies and other typical kid's characters. This book teaches children about various instruments, introduces them to musical language and provides vibrant pictures to look at. I now give this to other children as a present!

My son was given a stack of truck books when he was about 2 and began learning the names of all kinds of obscure heavy machinery. I though, “that’s neat, but if he can learn that, he can also learn other things (more important to ME :).” So I decided to look for books about music. I bought "Zin Zin Zin a Violin!" and, sure enough, he soon began to recognize an oboe, harp, trombone, etc. He and we, his parents, loved it so much I looked for another Moss book and found the equally wonderful, "Our Marching Band.” As I wrote in my review of that book, it is primarily because of these two books that our son (who will be three next month) now recognizes all the major Western orchestral instruments, knows the difference between concert hall orchestras and marching bands, and is even aware of the difference between the type of batons used by a concert hall conductor and a marching band leader. The language is also fun and poetic with some lovely vocabulary and wonderful illustrations with diverse casts of characters. These books have truly influenced and become part of our life, and we're the happier for it!

My 19 month old daughter loves music and she is OBSESSED with this book! She could name all of the instruments after a day of reading this book dozens of times and loves asking us to pretend to "play" the instruments. The illustrations are great and she loves pointing out that the trombone player took his hat off in one of the pages, the french horn player intermittently "hides" his hand inside the horn, the animals are dancing, etc :) The rhyme is clever and catchy and I think something she will grow to appreciate when she is older with more attention span for actual reading! It's a great book for all ages, very educational and entertaining!

When my son was a baby, I found this book for a few dollars, obviously unread, at a local used goods store. I'm wary of books from there that appear unread, but on first glance through it seemed to be a good book so I bought it. And am I glad I did! We give away copies of this as a gift to new families. Our kids both love it, and my husband and I are drawn to things that rhyme since they are more fun to read and flow so well. This book rhymes well but the story also has depth as it goes through and explains a multitude of instruments. I have a musical background and love that this instills in my kids a love of instruments too. They are curious and when we come across opportunities to explore instruments, they have a background knowledge from this book as to what the instruments are and what they do. It's awesome. We love the story!

I must admit, I didn't like this book to begin with.As other reviewers mentioned, this book is not written to a child's level. I usually like to buy my daughter books that have bigger words sprinkled in the verses, but it seems like this book is crammed with the bigger words. Yes, the descriptions of the sound were accurate - but would a preschooler really understand the descriptions without hearing the instruments? I didn't think that she would be able to understand why the clarinet played "breezy notes so darkly slick," or the oboe was "gleeful, bleating, sobbing, pleading through it's throbbing double-reeding" without being exposed to sound of the instruments. In other words, I didn't think my daughter would be able to understand what the words meant from the context of the book alone. So why five stars then?We started reading this book a month ago, and since then my daughter has been asking for it every day - sometimes five times a day.As other reviewers mentioned, this book is great for reinforcing counting. It is quite refreshing to be able to count musicians as they're added to the orchestra, instead of just counting sheep or dinosaurs. The illustrations are quite beautiful, and in addition my daughter now knows the names of all of the instruments in the book.I also dusted off our Mozart Magic Cube (used to be called Embryonics Music cube)- a "music block toy" that has sound samples of four of the instruments in this book - the flute, harp, french horn, and violin. Whenever we read this book, my daughter finds the appropriate instrument for the appropriate verse. At the end, my daughter and I "clap loudly and shout 'Encore,'" and we play the entire orchestra on Mozart Magic cube again. And that, as the book says, "is a great delight." I have fun reading this book to her, even when I read it over and over again.

Good introduction to various orchestra music instruments for young children. The rhyme is cute, though sometimes may seem forced, it doesn't "baby" down the language even for the younger crowd - the vocabulary level is challenging and not typical without being out of reach (e.g. "encore" and "octet"). Text is not too long or verbose so doesn't overwhelm young children. A fun read aloud for our music loving 2 year old and seems good through kindergarrten. Though not the main focus, also a good and atypical counting book (10 instruments introduced one by one and counted upwards from a solo to duo, trio, quartet up to a nonet to a chamber group of ten.) Very lively, dynamic illustrations (see picture of cover) - I enjoyed them as an adult. Good gender/race mix for the musicians - a positive book in terms of diversity issues. Overall, a very good book for exposing young children to musical instruments; definitely worth having.

This has to be hands down one of my favorite modern indie poetry collections. The feelings are soulful and raw, the writing has flow, the storytelling is poetically beautiful. Well worth the read.

Absolutely love this book and read this one in 2 hours on a drive back home. Short stories and poems. Have you feeling empowered, inspired, and proud to be a strong black women within so many dimensions.

Another best seller by Shatara Liora. She takes you all the way there. This book coupled with, East of a Cold Red Sun and some hot herbal tea will put you in whatever mood you desire. In "Love's Third Eye", I can feel the emotion and the words seem to flow from different dimensions. Definitely a enlightened and blessed literary work.

I'm furthermore IMPRESSED & AMAZED with this authors' newest collection. Liora will have you inspired with feelings strength & love, even sadness (in a good way) from the words that dance across the page. Her second book solidifies her talent as an artist & poet, I can not wait to see what more she has in store for her readers.

Shatara knows how to make you feel each and every word she puts on paper. After reading her first book, there wasn’t a doubt in my mind about purchasing her second. Do yourself a favor and get both books. You will not be disappointed.

The thought, emotions, and passion that went into writing this book is apparent from the first page to the last! Shatara Liora is an amazing poet. I enjoyed reading her work and look forward to reading more in the future.

This poem book is just as great as her last book!!! Very real and poetic

One of the best poets in the game right now. Regardless of your favorite genre, Shatara’s writings take you on a beautiful and vivid journey.
