I did stop doing genealogy for a couple of years due to medical issues taking up my attention. I had hoped this book would help me get back to doing genealogy in a better organized way. I am over half way through and am finding it will be perfect for me. It is especially good at explaining how to use digital sources and programs.
This book’s title is kind of misleading. It’s really about being a more awesome, more efficient genealogist. I expected a focus on organizing your actual genealogical files, and that’s in there. But the author's s real focus was on streamlining every genealogy-related thought and activity you could possible have. It’s so comprehensive that if you can’t get some value out of it, you’re probably not a genealogist at all. From emails to social media to research trips to volunteer activities, everything you'll do as a family historian is covered here. I'm an extremely organized person to begin with, but I still got a ton of value out of reading this book.
The book is filled with a combination of best practices for staying organized in general, and a ton of resources and strategies specific to genealogy.When I recently started researching my genealogy, I was quickly overwhelmed by all of the resources and conflicting information I found. I have spent more time trying to make sense of the information than doing the research itself.Having just finished this book, I'm confident that I'll be far more efficient during the time I spend doing research, get much better results, and have fun doing it. And I look forward to trying out several of the tech tools and genealogy resources the author has recommended.
As a 3rd Year hobbyist who has become aware of the limitations of some of my "newbie" systems, I needed some guidance that could take me to a new level of efficiency and focus in genealogy.The best part was that Drew Smith built upon some of what I already had in place, making recommendations for additional steps and processes seem do-able and logical as an evolution.Great templates to use, too.
Finally a book that addresses all the different areas you have to deal with in doing genealogical research--yourself, your office, your research online and off, your research trips, education, communication, etc.,...just having him identify the areas helped me to realize why I was feeling so overwhelmed. Now I'm tackling each area with suggestions from the book, and starting to feel like I will finally get organized so that I can be more focused and productive.
Excellent format, very conversational read. As I start to get more organized with my genealogy this book is staying nearby for quick tips. I can pick up to review a chapter at a time. May be too basic for folks who have practiced for years, but these tips have helped me get better organized to make the most out of the time I can spare to work on my family history.
Great book that gives great instructions on how to organize your family history so that you can find what you need quickly and easily! I recommend this to everyone who wants to either get control back over their genealogy or someone just starting out who wants to make sure their hard work is in an easy to find format.
Has very little to do with Genealogy. Mostly tips on which personal organizational tools the writer likes to use. Sure, some of the tools can be used for Genealogy organization .. or for organizing something else.
