Common Ground on Hostile Turf: Stories from an Environmental Mediator

From Booklist

Government representatives versus grassroots rebels; ambitious developers versus environmental defenders; hunters versus herders; Native American tribes versus New Age interlopers. Throughout the country, life seems to be a constant battle of opposing forces, as too many people vie for too few resources. When initiatives involving hot-button issues such as water rights, toxic-waste disposal, and antipollution regulations move from the theoretical to the actual and bureaucrats descend from their ivory towers to set up camp in one’s backyard, the potential exists for a colossal clash of wills. Into the fray step intrepid mediators like Moore, whose job it is to help break stalemates and defuse tempers. An environmental and public-policy mediator, Moore has managed conflict resolution across an impressive and impassioned array of controversial subjects. Offering specific case studies from nearly a quarter century on the front lines of civic confrontations, Moore engagingly profiles the qualities required to help individuals and groups make critical choices and come to consensus, painlessly and respectfully. --Carol Haggas

"An environmental and public-policy mediator, Moore has managed conflict resolution across an impressive and impassioned array of controversial subjects. Offering specific case studies from nearly a quarter century on the front lines of civic confrontations, Moore engagingly profiles the qualities required to help individuals and groups make critical choices and come to consensus, painlessly and respectfully." (Booklist)"Moore's examples are varied and compelling, and offer instructive lessons on resolving the critical issues that face the West as population and mobility increase and resources dwindle. Her voice is passionate, reasoned and articulate, yet seasoned throughout with the vulnerability she deems so essential to conflict resolution." (High Country News)"...inspiring...hybrid instruction manual and memoir..." (Publishers Weekly)"engaging and thoughtful... teases out some of the lessons she has learned about getting people with sometimes radically different backgrounds and perspectives to come together and undertake change." (Strategy and Business)"To read Common Ground on Hostile Turf: Stories from an Environmental Mediator is to pass many delightful hours 'being there' with Lucy Moore....It doesn't hurt that much of the turf is the spectacular terrain of New Mexico, captured beautifully in Lucy's simple, unobtrusive prose" (ACResolution)"follows the gratifying and sometimes frustrating twists and turns inherent in Lucy Moore's career as an environmental mediator....the stakes are high and the conflicts dramatic enough to make it thought-provoking for a general readership....Moore offers a series of stories of her own that are often riveting as they unfold." (Santa Fe New Mexican)"[Common Ground on Hostile Turf is] about successes, failures, and outcomes that contain elements of both. It's about helping to build relationships of trust in order to undertake collective action to further a common purpose, but also—not incidentally—for the sake of the relationships themselves." (New Mexico Mercury)"Alternative dispute resolution is one of the main impulses in American law today, and this is notably true in environmental law. Lucy Moore, a creative and successful mediator, takes us inside the negotiating rooms and shows how listening, respect, and opening up are not homilies—they are the sturdy foundations for building true and lasting results." (Charles Wilkinson University of Colorado Law School)"For three decades, Lucy Moore has opened my heart and mind with her stories. She brings to life those times when 'trust and respect among adversaries are possible' and offers us a path forward critical to our future. Regardless of the troubles people find themselves in, a way opens when we can tell our stories to one another—and when we listen." (Gail Bingham President Emeritus, RESOLVE)"Lucy Moore is an environmental mediator with decades of experience in the American Southwest and great stories to tell. In fact, storytelling is the key to her success as a professional mediator and facilitator. As she explains with great impact and poignancy, the only way to help people enmeshed in difficult resource management conflicts is to get them to share their stories. Newcomers to the field will learn invaluable lessons from Lucy's firsthand accounts." (Larry Susskind Ford Professor of Urban and Environmental Planning, MIT, and founder, Consensus Building Institute)

Having lived in Northern New Mexico for twenty years I was surprised and delighted to hear some back stories about the recent history of the area.Lucy Moore tells about events that have shaped our lives in this area in ways that bring the people and events into focus without sugarcoating the difficulties of changes in populations, environments and the interactions of diverse cultures. IT is is ongoing and she does not tell us about conclusions and fixes but how this ongoing search for mediation really works.

Lucy is a very very wise and fine environmental mediator - a founder of the field, and a rare soul who walks her talk. This book is a gem, an opportunity to spend time with Lucy, glimpse her magic and steep in her remarkable yet humble insights. But it is her gift as a story teller that draws you in and lights the west on fire- and you finish the book with only a inkling of how much you have just learned. Read it, and then treasure it.

In each of the 10 stories contained in this collection, Lucy Moore provides vivid descriptions of the physical, social, psychological, and emotional terrain that constitutes the "hostile turf" and the mediation processes used in the search -- sometimes futile -- to find common ground. A remarkable achievement in a compact volume.

Had to read this for a class, and still managed to enjoy it thoroughly. The stories presented provide lessons and insights in a palatable way, and their sequence creates a nice arc.

Common Ground on Hostile Turf is a book of great stories, and as Lucy Moore points out, stories are fundamental to successful mediation and facilitation. As a mediator, I was captivated by the book was intelligent, instructive, and entertaining.

Really good

I live in the area and I knew Molly and her family. I didn't know all they were doing so the story told me the rest of what I didn't know.

The author was spurred to become a mediator in environmental disputes by sitting in on a community trying to come together over water. New Mexico had a fraught history of water rights disputes, but now wells were being contaminated by too many septic tanks. Native peoples and towns as well as agriculture were at odds but a strong tribal leader, Governor Viarreal, held a general meeting on tribal land so he could control matters - no press, no mentions of existing legal suits - then when that day's meeting was over, a welcome lunch was served to all. Seeing how the community that talked together, worked together, and ultimately benefited everyone, the author began a quarter century (to date) career of mediation. We are told that the mediator may receive confidences by one side or other which must always be kept private. There may be co-mediators. With cross-cultural tensions, industry and poverty, ecology and toxic waste, there were plenty of disputes in the author's area. She found however that being funded by a foundation, however benign, made her suspect in the eyes of traditional people who felt their way of life was at risk. They could not move away while incomers could. Some people were concerned to know who she herself was, where her family lived, what made her so interested in other words. The situations explained are so potentially complex that a reader may not read all the detail; focusing instead on the broader picture of sheep grazing rights in the green mountains, or water rights grievances when environmentalists tried to ensure that a river would retain rights to enough water still to make it a river. However if you are into local politics or social work, there are some firm lessons to be learned - even that the method of getting people to introduce themselves around a group table won't be the same for every meeting. Many home owners are too busy to want to take time to argue around a table, preferring to hold an entrenched position and get on with the work of survival. The author's group of mediators developed a mission statement and set of policies for press, record keeping, responsibilities and other issues. Amazingly she says that developing these regulations took 'a gruelling two and a half years' so the message would be to start early and agree a few basics before anything more complex occurs. But then, committees are often that way. She found one person on an environmental issues committee who sat through all the discussions in 'bad faith' intending to throw water on the results and sabotage any consensus. Again, committees can be that way. Persons like this are not going to change.Although the author's field had been natural resources disputes, she was later asked to mediate on the issue of educating tribal children. Her work with local people had made others see her as fitted to mediate in this area. She made sure to have diversity in the mediation team. Some observers were permitted at this time, including a high school student who told her elders that they looked like kids squabbling over candy. The author felt that observers might encourage posturing. She learned that historical trauma remains with many people regarding their ethnic community, making them innately suspicious of outsiders.Looking at a community with a toxic waste pile of uranium tailings from a bankrupt company mine down the road, poisoning aquifers and blowing dust, the author shows us why intervention is needed. Yet when she was called in, the group planning a cleanup just wanted her for 'hired guns for crowd control' at meetings with the community. The agency was filled with initials, acronyms and scientific jargon. The local people pointed out that when the mine opened, they hadn't known much, hadn't known the questions to ask. Now they were better educated on the topic. Such issues are all part of the mediator's challenges. The final part presents a summing of up lessons learned, which are related to the locations of the book but could be adapted. Anyone in this field could learn a lot. I am not giving a higher rating because at times the story seems too personal a memoir and too involved in the minutiae - which to the author, may be the point, but to an uninvolved reader, slow down the story and make us want to skip ahead to some kind of resolution. A good book to team with this one, for people keen to explore tribal and environmental issues clashing with pollution problems, would be Peter Matthiessen's 'Indian Country'.

Enjoyed the book, very intriguing plot

The Red Hotel opens with testimony before a congressional committee stressing the necessity of shared information between the intelligence community and hotel chains for the safety of their customers. This scene alternates with scenes of a terrorist bombing at a hotel in Tokyo. Dan Reilly, the VP-International for Kensington Royal Hotels, departs Washington for Tokyo to assess the damages to their hotel. After viewing the devastation and the number of fatalities, Reilly submits a plan to the home office to deter future attacks. Gathering a panel of security consultants that includes a former CIA official, a former FBI official, a military strategist and the owner of a company of mercenaries, they outline security upgrades for the hotels. These are based on threat levels, with a red hotel being in imminent danger of attack. The Tokyo attack is tied to Russia’s plan to return to its’ former greatness under the rule of President Nikolai Gorshkov. As a young KGB officer during the re-unification of Germany, Gorshkov felt betrayed by his superiors and is now in a position to not only exact revenge, but to also test NATO’s ability to defend its’ members borders.Dan Reilly’s background includes time in military intelligence and a position with the State Department. Having a contact within the CIA, he is able to discover the identity of the Tokyo bomber and his ties to Moscow. Reilly is resourceful, analytical and a capable adversary to Gorshkov and his plans.Ed Fuller has the experience with an international hotel change and his co-author, Gary Grossman, has written some engrossing thrillers. Together they have produced a thriller that throws you right into the action and the tension builds to a final confrontation that will leave you breathless. In the closing acknowledgments this is revealed as the first book in a new international thriller series. This opening story will have you anxiously awaiting more.I would like to thank NetGalley and Beaufort Books for making this book available for my honest review.

Red Hotel is a gripping and shocking thriller that smacks of real life. Russia wants to get back much of the land that it has lost during the last century. How to do it - The action centers around the director of an international hotel chain. Somehow he has detected a Russian plot to undermine NATO involving terrorist bombings and other dangerous and risky activities. Red Hotel reminds me of Cussler, Flynn, and Thor, some of the best in the business. Have fun and get ready for a crazy and unpredictable ride.

This is one of those books where you could take it or leave it. The storyline revolves around terrorist attacks on so called “soft targets,” in this case an upper end international hotel. How to anticipate these attacks and keep guests safe is the goal as well as identifying the culprits.I felt the book had too many characters to keep track of, jumped from place to place and never really explored the background of the main character. Still if you enjoy a good thriller this one may be for you. All in all not a bad read.

I received this from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.DNF @ 18%I really didn't connect with this one, and at almost a fifth of the way in, some semblance of a plot should be apparent, characters should be developed, and the book should be drawing me in. None of that happened, and it was becoming a chore to pick this one up.One star, plus an extra one for the outstanding descriptive prologue.

Red Hotel is a fast moving exciting look into the international hotel business. It is a wonderful spy thriller and I would recommend it to one and all. Great job guys. Looking forward to the sequel.Debby

'I was consumed by the story - and it stands tall as an outstanding read amongst anything I've read.'The part where ... was BRILLIANT! I was feeling totally relaxed that ... and then Boom!

The storyline begins with a congressional hearing where Dan Reilly, VP-International for Kensington Royal Hotels is asking for access to communication between the intelligence community and hotel chains for purposes of keeping their guests safe. This would be the same information that already is shared with the airlines. But before any significant issues are addressed, the meeting is interrupted when a hotel in Tokyo is bombed. From there Red Hotel takes you on a roller coaster ride around the world making you hold on to your seat for dear life.. I can definitely see this book being made into a film. It has the characteristics of a Tom Clancy Book. The entire book weaves in and out of surprising twists and turns to culminate with an explosive ending. As the first book in a series, I highly recommend reading Red Hotel. Can’t wait for the next book.

What can I say about a book which has been a well known and influential American classic since well over a hundred years? I guess I could start by telling my personal relationship to the story. I get my mail in a town called Ramona, where some of the significant events of the story took place. I live in the nearby San Pasqual Valley where other significant parts of the story happened. I have a close friend member of the Kumeyaay nation, original inhabitants of the area, who tells me stories of his family related to events described in the book. There were many unpleasant happenings. For example, his grandmother's band dug a pit in which to hide the nubile daughters of the village whenever sentries warned that white men were approaching. They would put the girls in the pit and pile boards and brush on it to save them from being raped. I attended the Ramona Pageant in Hemet a number of times. So the story as a whole lies close to my person. With all that,, I have some quibbles with the book. The particular copy I purchased from Amazon is a "print on demand" version which has none of the standard front matter. The story starts abruptly on the back side of the title page. There is a brief and somewhat inaccurate summary of the story on the back cover. As for the story, while it presents itself as historical fiction, it actually descends in large part to the level of political propaganda. Rather than giving a realistic view of the period, it cherry picks the worst possible cases and aggregates them as representative. Not to say that the Indians were always treated well by the white settlers. San Diego County had more than its share of scoundrels, whom Ms. Jackson describes in exhaustive detail, but that is only part of the story. She stated openly that her purpose in writing the book was to stir up the American public to treat the Indians better -- a worthy cause given the general course of events in the latter part of the nineteenth century -- that she overdid it in many instances should not deprecate her for her effort, but should warn us not to take it all too seriously as fact. Important to remember there never was a half-Indan half-Scot woman named Ramona, nor an Indian named Alessandro, nor a rancho owned by Señora Moreno. These are all just frames on which to hang various historical incidents in an effort to create a story. Many of the results are not cohesive.Altogether an interesting tale with good local color of the time. But to be redd with caution.

Greatly edifying novel. Author Jackson was as strong an advocate of Native Americans as a white Midwest society woman of her time could possibly be (read the terrific Introduction to this edition), and the Native and Spanish points of view of the “American” colonization of California, as filtered through her pen, make a fascinating read. RAMONA was made several times as a movie. One was by DW Griffith & can be seen on YouTube; readers should also see the newly available 1926 RAMONA starring Dolores del Rio—in which the heroine conveniently develops amnesia about her years as a Native (!), duplicating white America’s own historical amnesia...

Great insight into the lifestyle of women of the late 1880's. Though it is fictional, this drama was the novel of its time that gave romance tears and sadness. Though Ramona changes her life to join a penniless, uneducated peasant-boy, I found the romance a bit ridiculous. Maybe created to entertain housewives you were unfulfilled in their life or to confirm that their lives were plentiful. A foolish girl alters her life after glance into an Native Indian boy eyes that she perceives to be love at first sight. I did not understand why she thought her life would be blessed with joy and not extreme hardship. Why would anyone with any sense dump Felipe who is stable and caring for someone who turns out to be unstable. The story is reminiscence of Jane Austen's "Sense and Sensibility". The Marianne character in particular wherein she meets the grounded Colonel Brandon then drops him for the the suave John Willoughby who later drops Marianne for a beautiful heiress. Then she recuperates in the care of Colonel Brandon who she marries.

The author writes a painful story featuring the mistreatment of Indians by "Americans" in southern California, after it became part of the US. Her style is rather stilted, and highly romantic, but sustained my interest enough to finish it. She wanted this book to be the "Uncle Tom's Cabin" for the Indians [Native Americans]. I don't think either book has completely obtained its objective; or if they did, we have forgotten.
